Vertigo Credit Card: 10% Back (Max $500) for 180 Days at Supermarkets and Service Stations, $55 Yr Fee ($0 Existing) @ St.George

260

This looks like a good deal to me. Some key points worth considering:

  • On website there is no explicit mention which supermarket or petrol stations are eligible. But some names are called out:
** Ineligible supermarkets are: Costco, Metropolitan Fresh and wholesaler supermarkets.
  • Cashback lasts 180 days since Approval of the credit card.
  • This offer is NOT eligible for a customer has held a credit card from St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA in the last 24 months
  • Annual fee is $55. Existing St.George customers get $0 annual fee for first year
  • There is another "0% p.a. interest on balance transfers for 24 months" offer (with 2% balance transfer fee) to choose. But choosing this means losing the offer of Cashback at supermarket and petrol stations.
  • Other key numbers are: purchase rate is 13.99%, min credit limit is $500

    Annual fee kills this

Should already have a StG account for Shopback exclusive deals which are fee free.

This is a great option for those who want to keep this for the promotion period and then cancel

    • a $55 annual fee kills the deal? lol was expecting $300+
Sign up for savings acct before applying

    • I mean, $55 for 500 cashback meaning $445 profit.

I've done worse for lower before, and in this period of poor CC sign up offers this one seems decent.

  • So you buy Coles worth gift cards in store to cap the 500?

    • I am not sure about this. Want to find out if someone has an answer to this. Otherwise, I might post my findings later.

No problems with gift cards. See my comment here.

Congratulations! You have met the requirements to receive your cashback offer on your St.George Vertigo Visa card ending in XXXX.
We hope you enjoy your $54.00 cashback. There's nothing further you need to do as it's been automatically applied to your account. You'll be able to see this shortly in your recent transactions in Internet Banking and on your credit card statement.

Should save it for discounted gift card options over time to maximise profit, rather than just buy them at cost price. Depending on your individual needs.

        • I have 28degrees price protection so pretty much only ever buy Woolies GC's. Is there was way to get instore discounted Colesworth gift cards?

          • @Nalar: Hmm nope.

For gift cards you could still buy discounted restaurant gift cards, uber eats, MasterCard's (for bills) etc. When they come up. Doesn't have to be gift card for retail stores.

In addition to your regular supermarket and petrol shopping to hit the 5k spend in 180 days.

            • @hamza23: So the prepaid Mastercards from Coles for points/discounts work. Good enough for me, cheers for the ideas.

24 months ineligibility? That's probably all of OzBargain..

    • what? were they doing some sort of deal in the past 2 years that I didn't know about? I don't have a card. yet

      • Some points offers (60-70k) were available as well as these banks becoming Shopback partners (before the influx of Shopback complaints) within the last 2 years.

On website there is no explicit mention which supermarket or petrol stations are eligible.

The reason for that is that the way in which St.George determines whether a merchant is eligible is through the MCC (merchant category code) reported for the transaction. The MCC is something that is not controlled by St.George, so it would be a nightmare for St.George if they said XYZ merchant is eligible, then XYZ's payment provider changed their MCC from something that is eligible to something that is ineligible.

If you are wondering which MCCs are eligible, the offer's terms and conditions mentions the following:

Participating supermarkets and petrol outlets: Each supermarket’s and petrol outlets eligibility is based on its merchant classification. While most major and many independent supermarkets and petrol outlets are participating, those not classified in the Supermarket, Grocers and Service Station merchant categories will not be participating.

If you search for Supermarket or Service Station in the Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual, the only matching MCCs with those in its name are:

    • MCC 5411: Grocery Stores and Supermarkets
    • MCC 5541: Service Stations (With or without Ancillary Services)1

If you are wondering which merchants have been previously reported to use those MCCs, I suggest you look at the MCC wiki (although please note that a lot of the data on this page is dated and an assigned MCC can change at any time).

    1. MCC 5541 is only intended for service stations where you pay for fuel in a convenience store (or through an app, e.g. FuelPay on the Ampol app, Pay At Pump on the EG Club app). If you instead pay for fuel at an automated fuel dispenser (aka a pay-at-the-pump machine, e.g. the machines you see at Costco's service stations, UGO Self Serve, unattended United Petroleum service stations, etc), those are supposed to use MCC 5542 (Automated Fuel Dispensers) and would therefore be ineligible for this offer.

  • can it be used to purchase a Woolworths gift card?

  • Had no issues last time it was offered but thats probably within the last 24mo cut off
