It's EoL and should be ~$20 (consider when it first went EoL in the US they were selling them off for $15 a shot)

I'm well aware they're EOL but Australian retailers haven't started selling them any cheaper unfortunately. :(

I also looked at used ones on eBay and Gumtree and in metro areas they sell north of $40.

However even though they're EOL don't think casting function to CCA would stop any time soon, unless they change the APIs and backend.

    • This annoys me as well. I ended up picking up one last week at 10% off, couldn’t wait, thought we wouldn’t have another 20% off in ages. Of course it had to be the very next damn week didn’t it!

  • It the audio version any better than using a normal Chromecast with a hdmi - vga adapter?

    • I thought about that myself but I preferred a direct connection. Also there's a full dynamic audio range setting on the CCA, which supposedly sounds better on a good audio system. So I'm not sure if that is also offered as a setting on regular Chromecasts

      • Not sure if it does.
I'd prefer the audio version but I already had a Chromecast I wasn't using.

FYI CCA supports optical out (TOSlink)

    • If you're only after audio, the real difference is the 3.5mm dual plug - for analog headphones and mini-TOSLINK, which is digital. A good alternative to the Apple Airport Express.

      • Also, it has a surprisingly good DAC inside, too.

    • It the audio version any better than using a normal Chromecast with a hdmi - vga adapter?

It depends on the DAC in the hdmi-vga adaptor. I would expect the DAC in the Chromecast to be better.

You've got 2 options when it comes to setting up a decent sound system with Chromecast - the Chromecast audio which will give you better sound and needs a direct connection, or a home mini which needs your audio system to have Bluetooth which won't have as good sound but as a bonus you get all the functions of the home mini.

Nope, there is a third option: shove a Chromecast into an HDMI receiver. No need to even turn on a tv. I think many people don't realise you can actually do this. I do this with a first-gen Chromecast as well as my MiBox.

Or link you home mini to you Chromecast audio to get the best sound and full functionality!

    • Forget Home Mini with Bluetooth if you want to do speaker groups. Bluetooth latency is often higher than what the Home app allows to compensate for, sounds terrible.

  • I’ve been waiting for this :)
Put two in my cart last night. Awaiting 10am and the wife to go pick them up!

Don’t forget you can run Toslink you optical/toslink with these! Which is superb! Extra purchase though!

For those that purchase this, here is a method to allegedly improve the audio quality of the CCA. I say allegedly because I have not tried it, nor do I possess a CCA to try it. YMMV, proceed at your own risk.

  • This is a good product. Works well for what it advertises to do. Could be a bit cheaper though.
