HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card, Annual Fee Reduced from $199 to $79 Permanently ($0 First Year but No Bonus Pts)

140

Noticed that HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card has reduced their annual fee to $79 ( new ongoing fee)

Might not be a great offer for new customers (no bonus points) but existing customers who want to keep their card, you can transfer to this new product offer at no cost. Ring customer service and they send you a Product transfer form, all done within the day.

  • Current offer $0 for the first year. $79 thereafter, ….. ends 31/3/2019
  • No fees for additional card holders
  • 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent, up to $2,500 per statement period. After that, every $1 spent earns you 0.5 Qantas Points, up to a total of 7,500 per statement period… ( good for a Visa card as most other banks have watered down their earn rate )
  • Complimentary insurance benefits
  • NO BONUS QANTAS POINTS with this offer
  • No Qantas points if paying ATO, rates, licences, fines, Bpay etc……. the usual

I read recently that Banks cannot offer you incentives to keep your card ie waiver their fees, so to me this is a good card to keep.

If you value a bank’s mobile app then check their App Store reviews before going with HSBC, they are quite poor.

Worst banking app I’ve ever used.

      • Not a good one I am afraid. I do have HSBC however, they have been actively seeking feedback and the one I am currently on now is better than what it used to be when I joined them about 15 months ago.

Citibank apps is better but obviously, can't beat big 4.

      • Wait till you try Virgin money's app. Oh wait they dont have one! Must be done via webpage even though they are technically Citibank and citi has an app.

Had HSBC account, and Credit and got both closed because of their super incovienent login/website/app. 50 passwords and passphrases, I always used to bite nails while trying to login.

Closed the accounts and I am happy again :)

This is awful. Not only is there no bonus points, there's no points for government transactions!

    • and the trick of paying via postbillpay and paypal with this card for council rates payments doesn't work either………

      • Does hsbcs systems recognise that youre paying gov transactions even though you are gping throguh paypal?

        • Yes. HSBC recognised it and didn't give me any points for paying my council rates via postbillpay/paypal.

I suggest with any card, that as soon as you get it, you do a test of a small amount and then try and work out on your next bill if you've been awarded the points.

Amex are great because they detail out how many points you get per transaction but most others just show the points earned as a lump at the end of each month, i give this as a reason for cancelling my card if this is the case (although it's not normally the primary reason).

    • I agree, no points for any govt or semi govt charges, but as annual fees are now unable to be waived ( some new law ), I want to keep a low fee Visa with 1:1 points and this seems to be the only one at this stage. If you want points for ATO and all govt charges, get the Amplify Signature, bit steep at $279 pa but a good card.

Must be some sort of sick joke that this doesn't include sign up bonus points?

  • What's the point without any bonus points?

    • I have not looked at many other cards in the market, but this seemed to be one of the few where a balance transfer did not incur an initial "transfer fee" before rolling into the 0% for 12 months.

    Awful, awful deal.

  • Had Citibank - Platinum with fee free for lifetime - plus point. that was a decade year ago.

  • Yeah Nahh

  • What does HSBC stand for?

  • HSBC has bad fee structure. I used Bpay to pay the card and because the day was on the weekend. The Bpay got into the card later because they are not the big 4 banks. I end up paying interest for the weekend.

    • Call and ask for the interest to be waived. They usually do this as a "once off customer gesture" etc. I also got hit, but with a transfer between my HSBC account and credit card (inter account transfers aren't always instant apparently…) and got it refunded.

    • Well, actually it's not HSBC's fault.
Each bank has its own processing times for BPay, and as far as I know, with all banks, BPay payments made on weekends gets posted on the next business day.

      Eg:

      https://www.commbank.com.au/support.banking.explain-bpay-pay…

When does the biller receive my BPAY payment?
If your payment is made on a bank business day before 6pm (Sydney / Melbourne time) it will be debited from your account instantly and processed that day. The biller will acknowledge the payment as having been made that day and should process the payment the next banking business day.

If you make a payment on a weekend or public holiday, or after 6pm (Sydney / Melbourne time) Monday to Friday, the payment will be debited from your account instantly and processed the next business day. The biller will acknowledge the payment as having been made on the next banking business day (this does not include weekends or public holidays)

      • But I did that for westpac card for years. I never got charge for the interest.

        • Westpac card using Westpac account you mean?

Beware - this card charges overseas transaction fees for companies such as Spotify, Netflix, and some Amazon purchases.

  • Who upvotes this cr*p

  • op ref "existing customers who want to keep their card, you can transfer to this new product offer at no cost". do you mean to say that an existing hsbc card holder can do a product transfer to this card and pay no annual fees for life or do you mean just the first year is waived?

    • Existing customers with this card can transfer over and obtain the new conditions ie new annual fee of $79 per year. You keep the same card and on your anniversary date you will be charged the new low annual fee. I have had this card for over 5 years and getting the original fee of $199 waived was always a hit and miss affair… years ago this card gave you points for ATO and utilities and gave you Qantas lounge passes… sadly all gone!!!

The first year $0 fee is for new customers only… where can you find a Visa or Mastercard with such a low fee with 1:1 Qantas points.?? I know Amex cards give you better points value but have much higher merchant fees.

  • Strongly suggest any new customers contemplating HSBC to steer clear due to their disfunctional systems ….unless you enjoy tearing your hair out.

  • Seems the offer has been extended to 30/06/2019
