Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (née P100D) - From $164,465 (33% off - was $248,000+)

28400

Didn't expect this to be my first post, but here we are.

Obviously not a deal for everyone, and still a high yield investment depreciating asset, but Tesla has adjusted the price on their highest end Model S and Model X by about 33% which is a pretty significant saving of about $82,000 - $85,000 (or thereabouts) varying based on on-road costs for whichever state you're going to register the car in.

E.g. VIC pricing

  • Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $165,529 (was $248,112)
  • Tesla Model X Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $172,502 (was $258,402)

For anyone previously looking to buy one of these, the value proposition has become a lot better. Still not for everyone. A pricing change of this magnitude is pretty much unheard of in the automotive industry, so it should be interesting to see what impacts it has on the resale value of existing used cars.

Here's an article from Carsales summarising the changes

UPDATE: These prices will only be valid until March 18th 2019 as Tesla will be increasing prices to make up for closing less stores than initially planned. They estimate 3% on average, but this higher margin variant may end up absorbing a large portion of the price increases.

So how many of us up vote people are actually gonna buy one

    • +2

I don't even know what I just voted for. I just hit the plus button because everyone else did.

That's what happens on the ebay deals now. People jizzing over 10% off, $120 min spend. It's unbelievable.

      Posh bargains?

  • Has anyone here actually bought a telsa before? Was it sticker price or could you bargain down like with a regular car dealership?

    • +1

You can't bargain down, but you can bargain your trade-in and bargain options with the car. Also if they have a car that you like that exists in stock you can get that a good amount cheaper than what the online price was.

Maybe that they are closing down the actual stores, they are increasing existing "in-stock" numbers and no longer need to charge the online premium? Finally, I don't remember for sure, but the online configurator seems much simpler than it used to be. There don't seem to be any real 'hard' options to choose from.

  • Purchasing just for the Bioweapon Defence Mode. Can't put a price on peace of mind.

  • Model x showing as $172502 as vic pricing driveway… How is OP getting $157095?

    • Probably because this is the Model S and not the Model X

    • +1

Thanks - sorry, copy and paste error on my part. Amended the post.

  • -2

Hilarious this gets so many votes. Not nearly as interesting as Musk smoking weed on JRE. But be interesting what it does for the resale market.

What advantages does this motorcar have over, say, a train - which I could also afford?

    • +1

first of all…it fits in your garage!

      • I'm sure glorious leader also has garage for train.

  • ebay wouldn't even have this many up votes if it had 33% off

    • +1

      Wouldn’t matter coz they’d price jack 35%

  • +3

What do you call a stolen Tesla……an Edison :)

  • -7

Not a deal since Tesla won’t exist in 5 years or so. Many manufacturers like Porsche for example are bringing out pure electric cars in the next couple of years. They have existing models to fund themselves whilst the electric vehicle side kicks off . They also have existing dealer / service centres . Add in the fact that many senior execs have left Tesla recently and by all accounts Musk is completely losing it and is now a liability then the writing is well and truely on the wall.

    • +1

They made 0 cars in 2011 and by 2019 they are bringing up their production to 500,000 cars per year and you think they will magically collapse because competitors are releasing cars "in the next couple of years"? Sounds like a really well thought out prediction there.

      • Are you forgetting about the original Roadster in 2008?

  • No one is buying, everyone is here for the lolz on the upvote train

i'm with ireadtermsofuse, im waiting for a train deal

    • Pfft, get outta here, everyone is buying at this price. It’s a steal. All that money I saved shopping at the reject shop meant I can afford this bargain.

Who the heck can I price match this with?

    • +1

      JB hi-fi

  • Why the massive price drop?

    • +1

Seems like this price adjustment is a by-product of cutting costs in sales and marketing, i.e. moving from a clicks-and-mortar to an online only sales business.

      Sauce

Since the beginning, their main goal has been to bring more and more affordable EVs to the market, and this is just a part of them acting on that (along with finally bringing the fabled 35K Model 3 into production).

The way they've done this though seems questionable, as this overnight change has cause a lot of stress to existing owners, especially those who have purchased recently.

      • a lot of stress to existing owners, especially those who have purchased recently.

Exactly. Good luck to owners trying to ignore the fact they're car is automatically worth $80,000 less… Potentially even before the keys are handed over.

Although this is objectively a bargain off RRP, I don't think this represents value.

Good post, all the more so being first post.

        • Yep, although I believe the sale price is finalised at time of delivery, so those who have not yet taken the keys should be okay. I feel more for those who have just taken their car home. Can they ask for compensation? If so, where would they draw the line?

With regards to value, I understand your view (I too, would be inclined to look at pre-owned), however my main aim was to help buyers who are/will be considering purchasing a vehicle within this segment, with the view that a $80K+ adjustment would be substantial enough to change their cost/benefit analysis.

    Thanks OP, bought 5.

    • Was just about to say. I didn't know there were this many OzBargainers.

Symbolic of what's happening in the car industry. There's a theory that people are delaying a car purchase because they'd rather buy electric.

  • +4

    Great stocking filler.

  • +3

Is this the most upvoted deal in Ozbargain history?

  • Sounds like the Fyre Festival money raising scam, where you had to load money into the bracelet. Tesla must be desperate for cash.

    • Everytime someone bags Tesla they just get further ahead.

      • Checked the news lately? 920M had to be paid back in cash, since stock price didnt reach set threshold.

    Out of stock worldwide. Ozbargained!

  • Damn I wonder if Tesla will give me cash back for difference since I ordered 2 few months ago. It is kinda annoying that overnight you can loose 80k for each car

    • Ouch. That would sting. How much was the deposit? It might be worth cancelling and re-ordering

    • Lol cancel it

      • 80k is loose change

      • yeah I will ring up tomorrow. I've heard from other buyers that they can refund the difference if the car hasn't been picked up yet.

  • Lithium cars are the future! No joke the industry is taking off, around 8% in China now electric. Likely to be mandated in Europe, VW investing 44billion euro. From an investment stand point looks amazing, check out an Explorer like Galan Lithium best small cap performer on asx over last 3 months and likely to go way higher. Do your own research it'll be worth it.

    • +1

i wander if VW will find ways to fudge the battery capacity output……

    • +1

It won't be the future until you can charge an electric as quickly as you fill up petrol. Until then, you're mostly forced to recharge at home when not using your car which is definitely not something that will be possible on a large scale. Think of all the units, houses with multiple cars, houses with just street parking and the list goes on. It really isn't feasible.

The only other solution is self driving electric cars that drive to a station to recharge and return on their own. This will probably happen before a car battery can recharge in a minute (which will likely never happen).

      • +1

The whole notion around whether or not it's the 'future' is not the point, in my opinion. To me, I'd consider whether it's right for myself and my family as we stand and breathe today. It's a blessing and a curse that we as consumers have so many options nowadays.

I'd personally seriously consider this as a key contender to anyone who had access to home charging infrastructure and is/will be considering purchasing a car in the luxury large segment.

  • Edison is not going to be happy…….bring on the price war…..

  • Can I use my flybuys points to purchase?

  • Now all we need is LCT to go away and bring another 33% discount
At that point - it's practically affordable !

  • The ludicrous mode is fcking mental the torque really puts you back into your seat and I’ve been in fast cars but the novelty of owning a Tesla dies down pretty fast

I’d be keen to get one if it was a lot less and more superchargers if any in Perth

  • -4

Probably a pricing error. Somebody punched in the $US price without applying the exchange rate.

  • This price adjustment reflects the brand. If it didn't have Elon M, would you really want to be a first adopter. Its no different from the days when small automotive groups tried to start their own car company. The niche sports brands probably did ok, but Tesla are trying to get into the mass market. Bargains had now for all. IMO

  • How much I can get return each year if I buy this car as a high yield investment

    • You will receive -$30,000 in annual return. Does that sound good to you? Good, you go order one now ;p

    • just treat it as a very bad fund that you bought using your super and the return is minus ten percent (-10%) for every year…

  • +5

LOL over 1800 upvotes from OB members but in reality fewer than 10 of them will actually buy one.

    • More like none

  • +3

Thank god. Actually buying one. About time for the price drop.

  • +5

That's within my budget now, thanks OP, no more petrol!!

  • Did Elon make some tweets that landed him in hot water again?

In any case, time to start looking under the bed and sofa for coins.

  • Just bought one with my Amex centurion card, if I don’t like I will file a 90 day refund guarantee

  • way out of my league

  • Will office works price match and give 10%’off ??

  • +2

Elon wants every price to be a multiple of 420.

  • +1

Went into the Tesla dealership in Chadstone today to chat with the staff about the pricing changes and to check out the S and X.

Personally I am going to wait to see what is going to happen to the luxury car tax (~$17,000 savings) in the next few months before my wife and I pull the trigger.

I think that Elon Musk has now realized that he needs to really get to that saturation point sooner rather than later or he is going to be the Betamax tape instead of VHS.

Saturation point from both car sales which will then justify his super charger stations which we will then continue to opt in for the US$100 per year premium internet service (via Telstra with year one bring free) etc. Basically he needs the sales NOW to push his competitors into the outer.

    • Is there anything that you've read or seen recently that would lead you to believe that LCT will be amended/abolished this year?

      • It’s not likely LCT will be abolished completely, but I’d put money on Labor bringing in some incentives for purchasing electric.

My bet is that will come in the form of electric cars having LCT exemption.

    • -1

" he is going to be the Betamax tape instead of VHS" What a stupid statement. Electric cars are not different formats, They'll all be using CC2 by the time the model 3 comes to OZ

  • +1

If we all put our cash rewards together we could afford one!! Let’s buy an oz bargain car and share it around !!

    • That's too many people sharing 1 car Haha !

  • Where are the electric servos and are they charging as much as petrol to top up your batteries
