Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (née P100D) - From $164,465 (33% off - was $248,000+)

28400

Didn't expect this to be my first post, but here we are.

Obviously not a deal for everyone, and still a high yield investment depreciating asset, but Tesla has adjusted the price on their highest end Model S and Model X by about 33% which is a pretty significant saving of about $82,000 - $85,000 (or thereabouts) varying based on on-road costs for whichever state you're going to register the car in.

E.g. VIC pricing

  • Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $165,529 (was $248,112)
  • Tesla Model X Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $172,502 (was $258,402)

For anyone previously looking to buy one of these, the value proposition has become a lot better. Still not for everyone. A pricing change of this magnitude is pretty much unheard of in the automotive industry, so it should be interesting to see what impacts it has on the resale value of existing used cars.

Here's an article from Carsales summarising the changes

UPDATE: These prices will only be valid until March 18th 2019 as Tesla will be increasing prices to make up for closing less stores than initially planned. They estimate 3% on average, but this higher margin variant may end up absorbing a large portion of the price increases.

The idea is that you would charge your EV just as you would charge your phone, i.e. at home, overnight.

Just as you wouldn't be doing the majority of your phone charging using a power bank, most of us wouldn't be doing our EV charging on the road. Considering that most Australians commute less than 100km per day, even in the most extreme case, the range on one of these P100Ds (500km+) would suffice if you were to only charge it once a week. Having said that, most EV owners would follow a habit of plugging in when they get home for the night.

      • 20kWhr per 100km if you drive like a granny. Do the maths, when we all plug in at night our power supply will not cope. Falls over now when we all turn our 2kW or less air conditioners.

        • Not sure how traffic is in your neck of the woods, but in Sydney, you'd have real difficulty opening this thing up on your weekday commute anyway. If anything EVs are more efficient in start/stop travel mostly due to regenerative braking and reduced air resistance.

What you're saying is not unreasonable if we were all to buy EVs overnight, but that simply will not happen. As demand grows across the wider network, the supply and distribution would be bolstered to match the demand. What comes first, the chicken or the egg?

          • @pathacks: Definity not Snowy 2. Let's empty the dams every night. Whole power supply chain needs to be radically altered and not by foreign corporations eg Elon M before we progress down this path. The opportunity to get this right is now.

        • Funny that Elon also builds powerstations isn't it!

Once you drive an electric car and never visit a petrol station, never service an engine, never change gear, and don't care if you are "idling" in the traffic it all makes sense.

  • How many of the 2000 up votes made the purchase?

    • It sounds like we need a pole.

      • +17

        Maybe also a poll

  • Dammit no internet until now, any stock left? Did I miss out?

  • $ 160k for an oversize Tamiya? Farking hell - this thing cost more than Optimus Prime and it doesn't even have an engine!

Thanks OP! Just got two :) hang on… This is not eneloops..shit can I claim refund on my cc? Haha

  • +3

On another note, this gotta be the highest +ve first post in the history of ozbargain surely?

  • 2175 up votes amazing, if i had the money i would get one.

  • +1

Sure it’s around 30% but no body on ozbaragin can even afford this, we are all poor bastards.

    • +3

I think you would be surprised what sort of people use this forum. Wealthy people still love a bargain

sure, a large percentage are students looking for a deal on cheap noodles and a cheap google phone out there, but then there are extreme opposites!

  • +1

Autopilot and self driving capability may be better purchased after delivery in some cases. No LCT And stamp duty.

  • I was seriously considering getting the ludicrous model but comes over 181k if you include those 2 extras that should of just came with this overly priced car. Might pass this time.

  • wish i had a spare 164k, i'm just struggling saving up for a 30k car lol

  • OK. Let's buy it. One for me, one for my wife… Very cheap :D

  • Which technology is going to be VHS and which Betamax?

    Lithium batteries or Hydrogen?

As Australians we could be pushing for either - we have reserves of Cobalt and Lithium. We also have a great patented CSIRO technology to make the Hydrogen fuel cycle feasible.

Still, a bargain is a bargain!

    • +1

Hydrogen is just stupid, people have been pushing that for a decade or more and it has gone precisely nowhere.

Lithium Ion will either slowly improve or be replaced by a better battery.

      • +3

Well, Lithium battery tech has been used for more than a decade. What's your point?

How is Hydrogen stupid? It will fill a car much faster than a Lithium battery can be recharged. It is a lot lighter.

        Both techs have pros/cons.

        • OK try to buy a hydrogen car,

They are building supercharging/normal recharging stations everywhere where is the hydrogen infrastructure?

          • +1

@Grok: That doesn't answer the question. Why is Hydrogen "just stupid"?

I am curious if you have a rational argument or are just spouting. To me they are both evolving technologies. Lithium seems ahead at the moment but has a lot of challenges and problems. Lithium may pull further ahead in the future; on the other hand, Hydrogen could overtake it. I "just" don't see why Hydrogen is "just stupid". :)

            • +1

@seb: Isn't no infrastructure and no cars enough?

I can buy an electric car today, even here, in Europe or the USA they have masses of them really cheap. Almost no hydrogen cars.

If normal charging stations start appearing here everywhere what is the chance that another technology will run a duplicate roll out?

Plus the whole idea that you use electricity to produce hydrogen then ship it out in tankers then fuel vehicles like petrol stations is stupid.

I can charge an electric car in my garage from my solar cells

You haven't given one reason why they are not stupid.

              • @Grok: My point is it is a competing technology. Lithium is ahead atm but may not remain that way.

Perhaps we have a different definition of stupid.

By some measures, rocking up to a petrol station and waiting 2 hours for a full EV charge is "stupid" compared to a petrol car or a Hydrogen car.

By some measures, using a fuel that weighs 10 times as much as petrol for the same energy output (after factoring in engine efficiency) is also stupid. Instead of carrying around 35kg (50L) of petrol, EVs carry around 400kg or so of battery.

There is no forseeable future where Lithium battery cars can be recharged in less than 5 minutes, as is currently the case with petrol.

There are still very few EV charging stations around the country. Ppl are forced to charge at home or to compete for very limited public charging spots.

Once Hydrogen starts deploying - if that is to happen - the petrol station infrastructure is already there and thousands exist across the country - just roll out the hardware.

There are several ways to generate and transport Hydrogen - the Ammonia cycle using a CSIRO patent is one.

Lithium EV may very well win out but it is not an open and shut case as you are suggesting.

Japan is still pushing ahead with Hydrogen. https://www.autonews.com/article/20170424/OEM06/304249965/ja…

                • @seb: Japan is pushing hydrogen because they have invested heavily in atomic energy, and the cheapest way to make hydrogen in large scale will be purpose built a nuclear plants.

    • +1

Hydrogen is really not efficient. Look it up. You'll get around 40-50% energy from the generation, whereas pure electric gets 90-95%. Gas cars are around 10-15%.

      • +2

An electric motor might be 90% efficient at a maximum, but in no way is an electric vehicle so high. From power coming in to your house to the car wheels is, at best, 60% efficiency. The greatest losses come from charging and discharging the battery cells.

I'm not opposed to the point you're making, but those electric figures aren't accurate.

        • +1

"The battery is highly efficient. Li-ion has 99 percent charge efficiency, and the discharge loss is small. In comparison, the energy efficiency of the fuel cell is 20 to 60 percent, and the ICE is 25 to 30 percent. At optimal air intake speed and temperature, the GE90-115 on the Boeing 777 jetliner achieves an efficiency of 37 percent."

          • +2

@ripprind: Yes, that is the first google result for li-ion efficiency. Not mentioned is the efficiency of the charger itself to convert from household AC to 400V DC, nor the discharging of the battery and electric motor losses.

Tesla owners report around 80-85% charging efficiency to get the power into their battery. Add in everything else I've mentioned, and I stand by the fact that 90-95% is not accurate.

            • @kongkurr: I agree that 99% is unrealistic, but it's the same with max efficiency of ICE.
in general the comparison remains roughly the same - battery EV is significantly more efficient.

MAJOR benefit IMHO is also decentralized fuel supply! I can't believe how often its not mentioned and how major aspect it is, it will change the power dynamic in the world a lot when most countries will be able to produce their own "fuel" for transportation!

The one definite problem I see is the recycling of current technology batteries. ICE is very simple to recycle, Hydrogen technologies probably somewhere in the middle but I haven't researched the recycling aspect that much. I suspect its a combination of scale and tweaking the current manufacturing technologies to make it reasonable. But it will put a major dent in the "life-cycle efficiency".

thanks op bought 2 great deal

Can I get one and use it as an uber to help pay it off ?

    • +4

better off getting a real job.
I tried uber for couple of nights, as an average I made close to $25/h minus the expenses!!
and these were busy Friday/Saturday nights.

I'd say ride-share is only for when you already have a car and need to make extra cash on top of your day to day.

  • Elon must feel bad about laughing at the pool deer

Anyone been on the Superman ride in Movie World? I drove the model x for a bit. It felt like that every time the light turns green. Passengers were very annoyed…

  • Thanks mate, just booked one…2 month wait time now…cant wait

  • Finally, the first ever electric car depreciates faster than it accelerates…

    • That’s a good thing, becomes more affordable.

  • Just want to say, this is the 4 digit "+" for a deal!!

  • This deal is out of this world…..one way ticket.

  • Bargain. 0-100 in about 2.3sec like a rocket.
If only i won the Lotto.

  • I wonder if the positive votes will get as high as the price ?

My only problem is that I had $165,000 put away for the car budget but I'm short by $529. Oh well, I might have to go for that Hyundai i20 I had my eye on (so many I's)

  • How dare secretly dropping the price.
    It is cheating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

… first it was Dieselgate … now is Teslagate !!!!!!

    Cheating on resale value!!!!!!
    Cheating!!!!

    ;-P

  • Pro-tip: Move to ACT and buy it for less than $158K… Instant $aving$$$

    • +2

      Why is it cheaper?

All customers who bought a Tesla before yesterday’s price decrease will be able to buy the Autopilot or Full Self-Driving capability for half of what those features would normally cost after initial purchase.

In other words, for a customer who previously hadn’t purchased Autopilot plus Full Self-Driving, they will soon be able to do so for $6,000 less than before.

  • I thought this was removed because it was a troll post last I clicked on it….

  • Just want to be part of this history making post.
    Hi mum, it's me!

jokes aside… who is actually planning to buy one here due to the price drop? actually interested

    • +3

Ozbargain CEO, after all the hits this thread is generating

    • -3

I guess nobody. This is just a flash mob. Who would have spare time for monitoring bargains while earning enough to buy this (instead of repaying a mortgage, for example)..

    • I've been waiting on a model 3, tesla finally hitting their price target would certainly contribute to those plans. Feels like they've been changing their sales approach every month in the recent past.

If you are specifically regarding the highest end Model S and X listed in the OP, than yeah I would assume no-one

  • Incredible!

  • +2

I made the 2500th upvote haha. This week has started on a winning note..!

This should get an award for biggest bargain first post!!!!!!!!

  • We're getting close to the highest ever upvoted record.

  • +3

They should make a movie about a fresh faced, wickedly handsome, man about town who decides to share his knowledge of a bargain he discovered.
His fast rise to fame with over 2500 up votes. How fame turns him bad, then he meets an attractive ozbargainer who sets him on the path to redemption.

      I'd watch that

  • There's got to be, ironically, one of us that purchased one.

  • No B28, pass.

    • Are you sure? Can you post a link if possible, i was under impression that Tesla LTE modems do support B28

  • what about 75D baseline model X? Can I drive away around 120k?

    • They recently dropped the 75D (along with the battery capacity naming scheme) in favour of a more simplified production system - see details here

Maybe best to pay with PayPal, and don't buy the extended warranty :)

    • Only closing stores in the US. Aussie store remains for now.

  • I wonder if any OzBargainer bought this.

  • Hmm pretty much on par with the C63 now..

  • Cheers OP bought 3. One for the wife and teenage son.

Nice deal save average of $2300 over 5 years in petrol for a cost of around 60-80k depreciation of the lovely car :)

    Yeap deserve's record .

  • decision decision lol. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Definitely some unhappy campers from the price drops.

And if you just bought in regions that saw bigger % reductions (e.g. 50% in Taiwan!), I wouldn't blame you …
    https://electrek.co/2019/03/04/tesla-owners-protest-price-cu…

  • +3

I'd get one when they come down to 50K each. There is still a huge portion of development cost in the price. I will sit back and let the early adopters pay for it. The fact they just dropped the price by 33% says something. If I had bought one I would be really angry right now.
