Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (née P100D) - From $164,465 (33% off - was $248,000+)

28400

Didn't expect this to be my first post, but here we are.

Obviously not a deal for everyone, and still a high yield investment depreciating asset, but Tesla has adjusted the price on their highest end Model S and Model X by about 33% which is a pretty significant saving of about $82,000 - $85,000 (or thereabouts) varying based on on-road costs for whichever state you're going to register the car in.

E.g. VIC pricing

  • Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $165,529 (was $248,112)
  • Tesla Model X Ludicrous Performance (previously known as P100D) - $172,502 (was $258,402)

For anyone previously looking to buy one of these, the value proposition has become a lot better. Still not for everyone. A pricing change of this magnitude is pretty much unheard of in the automotive industry, so it should be interesting to see what impacts it has on the resale value of existing used cars.

Here's an article from Carsales summarising the changes

UPDATE: These prices will only be valid until March 18th 2019 as Tesla will be increasing prices to make up for closing less stores than initially planned. They estimate 3% on average, but this higher margin variant may end up absorbing a large portion of the price increases.

Kona ev ain't gonna be cheap. Ioniq on full ev is alone 50grand. Kona has double the capacity. Looking at 60k drive away for that

          • @krisspy: For a 500km range EV it's cheap. I'm a little annoyed that my delivery is delayed by the release (and I suspect a heavy advertising campaign with 7 Network as they are showing all 3 movies in the coming weeks) of the Kona Iron Man Edition™.

Bettter yet now Hyundai has hydrogen powered cars, produce water as emission and takes 5 minutes to refill the tank with hydrogen and has 850km range.

          Pros:
Hydrogen tank does not need replacing compared to tesla batteries. Low maintenance cost.
          Way faster to refill
Eco friendly, if that’s what’s Tesla main aim

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: Hydrogen….
            Lol

          • @[Deactivated]: Lol hydrogen.

Cost of refilling is on par if not more than petrol in some European countries. Plus you know how much hydrogen is needed to get that range? Your car is essentially a MOAB in the case of an accident

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Hydrogen for passenger cars does not make sense no matter how you shape it. The tanks do need replacing after 10 years actually. There are warnings on all the fuel flaps of the FC cars in Australia for "evauluation"

Hydrogen isn't an energy source. It's a carrier, and not a very efficient one at that. While breakthroughs may occur in it's production the H2 molecules are very difficult to store and transport.

Refilling speed is a point that's always made. I don't drive 24 hours a day so there's always an opportunity to charge an EV, at home in my garage using existing infrastructure that isn't owned by big oil.

            • +2

@reecho: There is a hydrogen producing farm in WA (using sunlight, seawater and air). The hydrogen is being transported as ammonia which carries H at a much higher density than H gas or liquid H. The CSIRO invented a membrane that will extract the hydrogen molecules from the ammonia at the point of dispensing, so the fuel can be transported and loaded into fuel stations as ammonia, never needs to be H gas or liquid gas until someone fills up their car.

We are going to be big exporters of H soon to places in Asia. Korea already has H powered taxis. The future is hydrogen, electric cars with batteries are only an intermediate stage.

        Yep exactly.

I don’t even mind buying used. Tesla holds a pretty great value but I reckon I can get 20% discount by buying used.

Plus let’s not rule out they’re rolling out cheaper model in 2021 or 2022. Especially when other car manufacturers start doing their own sub $30k electric cars.

And then for the apartment issue, no matter how cheap the car is, I don’t think I’ll buy it unless my strata installs a charger. Or my closest Westfield. Right now only Westfield 20 mins away from my place has it (or supercharger in Broadway Sydney).

        • There are companies like JETCharge who specialise in charging for apartments/Strata.

          • @reecho: I’ll keep that in mind the next time I bring this up in the annual general meeting.

        • Damn how much’s your apartment in the city must be excess 2m

          • @[Deactivated]: Not in the city, Broadway shopping centre is 30-40 mins drive. I checked from Plugshare to see where I can charge nearest.

The original plan/vision was to get this to you On-the-Road for $47,000.

Now, due to the industry, taxes, and economy…. it will instead be starting at $60,000.

At that new/realistic price, it's not saving the world and faces immense competition from virtually all companies. Not to mention the impeding electric car rivals from South Korea, Japan, and maybe Europe.

PS… I'm personally interested in the Rivian R1T, that new Electric Dualcab Sports Ute, but I'm sure not to afford anything like it until at least 2030.

      • +3

        The original plan/vision

Yep Elon does all his strategising in AUD.

It is, and always has been, starting at $35k USD +/- taxes & incentives.

    • 50k AUD will definitely happen when Tesla ramps up the Tesla cars production at their factory in China.

    • Battery safety is still questionable in EVs: https://www.smh.com.au/world/north-america/us-safety-agency-…

Poor driver got burnt beyond recognition and the batteries continued to burn on the tow truck.

    Don't forget cashrewards

    • +3

Thanks man. At 7.5% Cashrewards, this is a bargain!!

  • That's a pretty steep discount. Tesla have been ripping us off like Apple.

    • +46

It's cheaper if you steal it. But then you can't call it a Tesla, you have to call it an Edison.

      • Clever :).

      • +1

I see Watt you did there!

    • They just reduced their US prices significantly too

  • +18

It's worry for Tesla owners that car overnight can depreciate this much.

    • +8

This is just a correction to match USA pricing.

Companies like Porsche have been ripping off Aussies for much longer, selling cars for 2x the amount they would be sold elsewhere. Sure, resale prices are maintained, but who are they really protecting?

      • Can you buy a car a RHD car in UK, japan or whatever and import, pay the taxes yourself and be better off?

        • In UK you can but you have to live there and own it for some time before you can come back here and bring it with you.

        • +1

You can starting Dec 2019. But you will have to either buy a old one (25 years or older) or a newish/new one of a variant that wasn't sold in Australia. It'll be a little difficult for Porsche as they bring in almost every variant. You can for example bring in early 4 cyl Macan's in the years that were sold before Porsche Aus started selling them.

Another Good example will be the new BMW M340i, BMW won't bring in the non X drive version which means you can bring in the RWD M340i from any RHD country.

    • You know when they use the term 'investment vehicle', they don't mean a literal vehicle

    • Is not a 20 bucks toy

      • +1

        woosh…

  • I really hate it when they talk about all the cost saving when going for clean energy (electric cars, solar panels..), they make it sounds like it would be cheaper in maintenance but people are just forgetting that the upfront costs are always double/triple the alternatives.

    • +5

Performance wise, the alternatives to this are something like a BMW M5.

These high end Model S' are performance cars. Not commuters.

      • +2

M5 does make a pretty good commuter car

    • +4

Do you think someone is looking for cost savings when they buy a car this expensive?

Solar panels can have a fantastic return on investment.

        • +7

Wow, misinformation on the solar panel lifespan much?
          http://energyinformative.org/lifespan-solar-panels/

A lot of panels just start to lose efficiency after 5 years and it's approx 1% per year after that.

So yes solar panels can be a good investment particularly if you use energy during the day like businesses. Battery storage on the other hand is not a great investment at the current pricing.

        • +3

"And NO too for solar panels, by the time you break even (6-7 years), unfortunately, that's also the time you will need to replace the panels, so not much of a saving there."

Rubbish, a 6.6kw system has a 3-5 year ROI now and solar panel warranty starts at 10 years for the cheaper panels, so even if they did require replacing in 6-7 years they are still covered under warranty.

          • +1

@donkcat: My 5.2Kw system has been in 8 years which has been monitored every 5 minutes during that time.

Degradation of panels?. Not worth noting.

            But do go on….

        • +1

And NO too for solar panels, by the time you break even (6-7 years), unfortunately, that's also the time you will need to replace the panels, so not much of a saving there

          wow, better tell LG that
They seem to have incorrectly given me a warranty 4 times longer than that

        • Inverters maybe, solar panels no, stupid comment.

        • Cheapest Camry petrol currently goes for 44K

        • +1

Rubbish. I installed my first panels 11 years ago and they are still performing at 98% of the power they had when they were new. I reckon if I could be bothered to clean them I'd get those 2% back as well.

    • Who talks about Tesla Model S and cost savings? I cannot imagine anyone sensible doing that.

      • If you can afford to buy that car don’t think care about money

    • -1

If we want to save the environment, we all should be taking buses and trains and cabs. Buy a Tesla when the public transport really aren't meeting your needs anymore, and your car is 15 years old.

      • That would be me then. But I reckon my car might have another 5 years in it and that should get us to something similar to a Model 3 for less than 35k.

  • +6

    Where's the westpac guy

Why Tesla didn't come up with a Model E between the Model S and the Model X, 'round about the $161K price range, is beyond me…

    • +1

…and then wait for a discount down to $69k?

    • +2

They have model 3. And they’re announcing model Y this year. And they have Roadster and Semi.

So at the end of the day it’ll spell: Roadster Semi S3XY.

    • +1

I believe they were going to call it Model E but another car company had the trademark. Hence the model 3 (backwards E)

    • They were going to call the model 3 the model e but couldn't because of legal issues with Ford / Adidas

  • +1

Damn you OzBargain, I was going to have a quiet Sunday.

+1 for the post, but judged as a bargain this is a - from me, not worth it

  • Looks at all my credit cards ….

  • Good deal but might get better over the course of the year. The luxury car tax adds about 15k to the price and might get canned considering there aren't any locally built cars anymore.

    • +2

There is no way LCT is getting canned. All that revenue to the government's coffers…

      • +7

Agree that governments might try to hold on to taxes but the LCT is a tax on a tax on a tax on most cars.

Manufacturers are all pushing for it to be abolished.

  • +3

Tourism refund scheme if you want to ferry it over to NZ for a weekend?

  • For those interested, the Model X is on display at Westfield Doncaster. Spoke to one of the sales consultants and the base variant of the Model 3 will be approx AUD $50K drive away.
