  • is this for new phone line connections only?

    • No. I've been with Optus for 5+ years, picked up a Galaxy Watch 3 weeks ago and have had eSIM working since day one.

      • did you just have to go to an Optus outlet? thanks

        • For the Galaxy Watch, I did it through the watch software. Seems you can do it though the Optus website though.

          • @stygian: Link to instructions please

            • +1

@D6C1: You need a Samsung phone for the initial set up. Then on the galaxy wearable app, settings>Mobile network, and follow the prompts

              • @ShouldIBuyIt: Absolute legend. That worked. I am on prepaid plan and it seems fine for now.

                • @D6C1: Oh wow, it works with prepaid?? That's good to know.

                  • @ShouldIBuyIt: Correct :)) already setup and working perfectly

  • can i put this in a second phone?

    • not that many phones support ESIM, and i think optus probably have a way to stop you from using in device other than the smartwatch

    • I asked them end of last year when the same deal was on and they said wearables only, not phones.

      • they say that

but they also say one thing and you can do pretty much anything else

    • +1

No, you can only provision an Apple Watch or the Samsung Galaxy Watch via their respective apps - you don't get the actual eSIM details to provision manually on a Pixel/iPhone/iPad/Surface Pro, etc.

  • It's an electronic Sim not a traditional one

    • +2

      Embedded SIM *

Very similar to ye old school mobiles that had no SIMs at all…

      • +1

        Ahh CDMA. I miss it.

  • Can I activate it and use for iPhone Xs instead as second sim ;)?

    • No

      • +2

How do they know your esim is a wearable or phone?

        • +1

          IMEI I'd say

  • I have it on my Apple Watch. Works well

  • -1

Will it work on a Optus Prepaid?

    • Seems to. Yes

      • Which is weird because you can't usually data pool on prepaid, I believe

        • +1

You do. I have two other phones (different numbers) using prepaid data pool

    • Unfortunately no!
And that's why it does not worth it.
You MUST have a prepaid contract which is awful comparing with other companies or prepaid contracts.

    • Just confirmed with their webchat team. Apparently, esim share is NOT available for prepaid plans.

Can I put this into a dongle?

    • This is what I want to know but from the other comments I don't think so. It seems previsioned to smart watches - and I don't think it's a regular sim, it's an Esmin which is apparently an electronic SIM

    • How do you put an esim into a dongle?

  • How do you set this up? It says "yes you can get Optus share"", but can't find anything to order on the link, tried on mobile and desktop.

  • Sucks that its only Samsung Galaxy Watch and the iWatch that support this

  • how long it takes to complete setup? its been an hour and mine is still in setting up.

    • +2

      same same!

      • Same here, 2hrs and counting

        • There's been a hiccup with your Optus Number Share activation request. Try again after 4 hours.

          that's the mesaage I recieved 4 hours later :(

          • @timetoquit: Just got the same message

            • +1

@olliestyles: I had to contact Optus chat, tech support. Got it sorted out. Did exactly the same thing again for the set up but for some reason it worked this time.

Tested and working. Switched phone off/ and Airplane mode and made a call with just the watch. Glad Optus finally moved towards esim as I was very close to switching to Telstra.

              • @timetoquit: wish it was that simple for me. i tried the setup again off my own bat. it looked like it worked but then came up with emergency calls only. 55 minutes on the phone with 4 different people. even suggested to them the fix suggested below by bonkers22 of switching on VoLTE. was told that was already part of my service. they are going to call me or text me back within 48 hours. frustrating.

                • @olliestyles: So I received two texts this afternoon. Last one saying "Good news! Optus Number Share is now active. You can now call and use data on your Watch."

So I went to check. Nope. Still not working. So I started a chat with Optus tech support. Started with the usual let me check your account. Didn't listen to my full story so I assumed that they must have read the notes or knew of a global fix by now. Proceed to tell me to delete the Wearable app, which I did hesitantly them to do a factory reset on the watch. At that point I was like no way. Finally got them to look at the notes and they say, oh I see you called earlier and it was escalated to the network team. I said yeah and they told me to wait up to 48 hours and I would get a text which I got. Oh but it's not fixed. You'll just have to wait that time frame now. Not happy nor am I confident but what can I do? Thanks for listening to my whinge.

                  • @olliestyles: @olliestylesI had the same issue for the last two days, the key is you need to reset your watch. I did reset my watch and while configuring it I registered my watch with Optus and it worked like a charm.

                    • @randomrandom: Just standard factory reset? When you say configuring it you registered it, was that on the watch itself? Which menu?

                      Thanks

                      • @olliestyles: sorry for the confusion, configuring means when watch starts up and you will be connecting it to the phone. Watch will ask to restore data if you have had any backup after that it will ask you to if you want to connect to mobile network.

    • +1

Took about 5 mins, from the time agent confirmed it was done

    • Mine still setting up too, says setting up service. Watch did its thing too. But definitely doesn't work standalone yet. Does a cellular symbol show up on the watch?

    • +2

Call up and ask them to switch on “VoLTE” on your account from their end. Should not take longer than a few minutes after this.

      • @bonkers22 you saved my day, the person from Optus team asked me to reset the watch lol. I posted your message to him and now he knows what to do.

  • That doesn't seem right "available at no additional cost on selected My Mobile Broadband Plus plans" since you can't receive/make calls on MBB plans whereas the galaxy watch can.

  • To everyone asking about using it elsewhere.

No it's not an actual physical sim card.

Is a piece of electronic already inside (e for embedded) the devices that can act like a physical sim when activated(this plan)

  • +1

Typical, waited on Optus for esim with Galaxy watch since the watch was released, now I port to Telstra, Optus comes up with this

  • +1

On an iphone/Iwatch setup, can it be used with the $120 prepaid deal that optus had not so long ago?

    • $120 prepaid? Not a month I assume?

  • Can this work with an iPad? I can’t stand the fact that despite having 160 GB I can barely use with my wife and my mobile phones pooled, I have to buy a separate sim for 15 dollars a month to use on my iPad.

    • +3

      Just hot spot it?

    • Same boat as me. 90GB phone plan with unmetered Netflix and other streaming, no home internet, always have 20 to 30 gig spare at the end of the month, some days charge my phone three times because I'm hot spotting. $15 a month for a data sim to share is like another 33% on top of my current bill. Stinging me just for simple convenience.

  • I think it’s max 500mb a month
