  • amex isnt widely accepted for daily spending. So, im just confused on what to spend it on if i get this?

    • +2

Supermarkets accept amex these days so just buy groceries or if really desperate gift vouchers for other stores where they don't take amex.

      • +3

Better yet the most handy tip is to pay someone on paypal - your bother, your mother.. use the Amex as your funding source. Yes there is a 2.9% (or something like hat from Paypal), but whats $29 p/$1k when you are just short of meeting your min. spend over the 3 months.

And ofcourse get your money back from them - its almost like a cash advance!

        :)

        • Nice!

    • No surcharge for AirBnb
Recently bought some tickets for Team USA vs Boomers…that got me above $3k
I even did a few international transactions, 3% isn't that much of a big deal unless you are buying something expensive.

  • It says new card holders only. I am a previous member 20 months ago, would I be considered new? Usually they put up some sort of caveat of up to 18 months, but not this time.

    • Bonus point eligibility
As usual, the terms and conditions state that card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

Its better to just call them and confirm (make sure they note it on your profile/account, get their name record time/date).
Ie I had the Westpac VISA & Amex direct card offer (which I only recieved a few months ago), called them and they said yes still eligible.

  • Will government charges (e.g.bills) count towards the $3000 spend? Terms and conditions just said less points. thx

    • gov bills generally dont take amex or if they do charge you significantly more than VISA or MC surcharge

      • Depends what you classify as Government charges. I pay Council Rates for 3 councils in Melbourne by AMEX. Two through Post Billpay and one direct. Yarra Valley Water also through Post Billpay. All of these get full points on Westpac AMEX. Land Tax and Car regio cannot be paid by AMEX but may be possible to purchase EFTPOS/VISA gift cards and pay at the post office.

  • short of buying an airfare or FF membership, is there a cheap 'hack' that will register you for the Qantas lounge invitations?

    • +1

Buying carbon offset for $1+ from https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au.

      • Can anyone vouch for this method?

        • +1

I can confirm this worked for me. Purchased the carbon offset and 5 days later received an email from Qantas with the x2 lounge invitations.

@FatGPT: Nice. Will give this a go later tonight and will report back after a week :)

            • +1

              @tonytiger: Can confirm it works.
made a purchase on the 16-17th and the invitations are in my account now.

              such a great hack :D
              Thanks SocietyBox.

      • Do you have to have a Qantas flight booked to do this?

        • +1

No, I didn’t have one booked and it worked for me

          • @FatGPT: Thank you! Going OS next week :)

  • Probably a dumb question but I'm struggling to find the answer.

What's the deal with supplementary cards? Is there such thing? Additional cost?

    • +2

These are the Ts&Cs that I could find in my account:

Annual Supplementary Card fee $0 p.a.
You can have up to 4 Supplementary Cards
Supplementary Credit Card Members must be over 18 years of age. You will be liable for all Supplementary Credit Card spending.

      • Thank you.

    • You want to get the max number of Supplementary cards as there are many special offers that you can only get one per each card you have and/or you will receive some on one card and not on others. In my experience if you order them online after setting up the primary account you do not get asked for any proof of the existence of the person you nominate. Keep written record of the name, DOB, user name and password (safely).

  • What is better value, this or https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/442828 ?

This or amex velocity platinum credit card.

    Any thoughts/comparison wouybe really appreciated.

  • How do you add your referral code to the random list?

    • Jump into your account settings at the top panel and click on "referrals". Scroll through the list and see if you can find it there

  • Newbie here, just received this card in the mail, I wanted to know are there any fees if you hit the min spend receive the points then cancel? Doesn't look like it but wanted to make sure.

    • $450

      • Someone in a comment above mentioned if you close the card account you might be able to request a pro rata refund for part of the $450 annual fee… worth a try?

  • +1

Offer has now been extended to the 6th of May, gotta get some more people on board past the mid April points devaluation

    • Isn't the devaluation just for amex points. Will it effect this card?

      • +2

The overall changes will affect the earn rates for this card. Standard points earn rate will drop from 1.5 points per dollar to 1.25 points per dollar after mid April

        • Even better now that the referrer gets 40K points….

  • Hi guys,

Is anyone able to confirm that minimum spend for the bonus ($3k) is able to be done via a combination of the primary card and supp cards? Or does the minimum spend need to be made directly from the primary card to qualify for the bonus?

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

I believe the spend on supplementary cards counts for the minimum spend. The primary card holder owns the card and has all the liabilities and benefits.

  • How does this whole referral thing work?

As how do i become a referee?

  • So,after a bit of advice my fellow ozbargainers please- I want to fly to USA in September 19, with 3 other people with Qantas. I am eligible for applying to Amex for the offer but i want to know how to be able use the 100,000 points without spending $3000 first ie I want to spend the $3000 on the flights…………………help

    • Not sure if I understand your question?

    • +1

Nope, you'll only get the 100k bonus points after reaching the $3k minimum spend. But you will have the $450 Qantas credit available for immediate use.

    • It is really not that difficult to spend $3,000. Rates, insurance and utilities. You can pay additional sums into some to cover future bills. Can also purchase gift cards' many of which now have 3 years or indefinite expiry dates. Woolworth's available from Cashrewards for 5% discount and many others with or without discount enabling you to bring forward future spending.

      • +1

Or if that desperate just PayPal your mate 3k via PayPal. $78 transfer fee however reach minimum spend immediately and don’t need to buy unwanted gift cards etc.

  • Just submitted my application but I didn't get approved right away whereas my mate did. I got the following message when I submitted my application "We have successfully captured your application and it is currently in processing. We will finalise your application as soon as possible and notify you of the outcome within 5-10 working days."

I'm sensing rejection… can you still get your application approved if you get the message above?

    • Not sure… I got the same message and then a few days later, the rejection letter came through.

      • In my experience, pretty usual for the outcome within 5-10 days message…. then you hear nothing and just receive the card in the mail

  • Enjoy your points whomever got my referral.
