Akai DAB+ Digital Radio ADAB100 (w/ FM Tuner) $49.95 + $6.95 S+H @ Dealsdirect

30

OfficeWorks had these priced at $75 (!!!) last time we checked (just before the holiday); hopefully, they'll notice this & drop price; dunno if they'll beat the price by 5%, as it's from an online shop.

(January's deal may have been a bit sweeter, but they've (reportedly) sold out…)

I think it's a 1-speaker (monoraul) source of sound, with stereo line-out (so, feeding its output into your stereo system may be a cheap way to get on the digital radio bandwagon, if you were wanting to do that; if not, wait for future, better/cheaper ones; they'll come OR digital radio may be slow to come to AU. ;-)

NOTE: At least one of the eBay vendors offering this radio didn't seem to be including the 240 VAC lead (or power block; which one is used by this radio wasn't 100% clear to me); make sure you get enough gear to run this from mains power, UNLESS you want to feed this a LOT of AA cells (6 at a pop!), over its lifetime. :-/

Here's the item description's spec's for this radio (E. & O. E.):

What's all the hype with DAB+ radio?

Asides from the lack of interference from AM and whatnot, is the music they play better than the trash talk, Nasal spray ads and dribble they put out on commercial radio stations every morning?

    • Besides the high quality, there are more channels than AM. For example there's an ABC channel devoted to only jazz, commercial free of course.

Why do you bother to listen to commercial radio where there is so much good music to be had for free, on DAB+ and the Internet?

      • For example there's an ABC channel devoted to only jazz

You can pick that channel up through your digital TV

        • Yes, but why would I turn on the TV just to listen to the sound channel?

        • If you have a digital set top box connected to your speaker system you can listen to the channel without turning your tv on.

I listen to a DAB+ only radio station that does not have DJ's/talk, its just music with one advertiser about DAB. So if you want to escape DJ's and talk, there are some DAB+ stations out there, and there are many more stations on DAB+, so its not so easy to get bored.

  • I want one, but just worry about its reception like my set top box-it is all or nothing, you must have adequate reception signal before you can receive it properly.
Anyone own one and know how it performs?

    • It's actually quite good. I'm indoors and the telescopic antenna works fine. My friend who has a pocket radio reported that it worked even in train stations where normal AM just cut out. But check that your area is covered.

    • Are you in a reception area? If so, buy a Digital Radio, and if it doesnt work you can take it back and get a full refund, apparently no, or very few radios are returned, so they must perform very well.

Radio reception was also a concern for me, as where i live is like a basement and FM radio does not perform too good, but with digital radio a very good signal is received, the signal error on the digital radio is a very low number of less than 2, and it never drops out and never has interference.

  • Yeah I can see digital radio becoming standard in the near future (just like digital tv, japan's already a few steps ahead of us in this area - our internet tv channels suck and the mainstream radio stations are still pretty low bitrate in comparison to the better indie/specialist stations).

Anyway, good deal for anyone wanting to try out digital radio!

If you want Officeworks to pricematch, use this link:

    http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/p/akai-dab-digital-radio-adab1…

    • AGREE This just looks like there every day price as they have had this item at this price for a few months already.

  • This should be the deal rather than ebay, dealsdirect have really good return policies these days so I'd rather buy from them.

  • Thanks to the O.P. for posting this. I actually found the same Akai radio for $1 cheaper on eSold.com.au and was able to get a price match with 5% discount from OfficeWorks so ended up paying $53.10 for it. For others who are interested, this is my first digital radio and I'm pretty happy with the purchase. While it has a fairly cheap plastic casing, the radio works as described and quickly picked up a strong signal for all channels. The mono speaker isn't brilliant but the headphone port has enabled me to hook them up to my AudioEngine A5s and the sound is fantastic.
