    Dam - you have to be quick. They definitely were free earlier today AND at the time of posting - I triple checked. The same thing happened last week with one of the books in that collection - I didn't learn my lesson & download it quick enough myself today.

  There is an Amazon link to the limited time kindle offers and it appears many are being added every few days. Best to keep checking the link as some books are only free for a short time.

  If you go to http://www.ereaderiq.com/free/ there is an Australian option and you can get a list of free books that are supposed to be free. I like going to the bottom of the Kindle page where there is an option of "see more" books that people who bought this book also bought. There are usually 5 pages and if you are on a free book, most of the suggestions are also free.

  Everyone - PLEASE BE CAREFUL several of the links ARE NOT FREE.

  That combined with Amazon's 1-Click purchase if you use that can cause you grief if you aren't careful. (Like me - I've just been charged $47.99 for something I had no intention of buying). My fault for not being more circumspect in what I was doing.

    Sorry you got caught out airtime by the changed status of that book collection. I realise now that the Amazon computer may change the status of a whole load of books, weekly at midnight Saturday somewhere in the states, so if I post some links again I will improve the timing so they don't change the status soon after I post.

    The only links which are not free now were the ones under the heading "no longer free", and I've now deleted them so no-one else gets caught out.

    But buyer beware as the status of these books can change at any time.

      Most businesses in the USA go by Eastern Standard Time, which puts them a 14 hours behind us over here. This would make the change take place after 2 pm Sundays over here. I hope this helps you for future postings.

      I was able to get Amazon to credit back the cost of the purchase. It just took an e-mail and a slightly anxious wait - I've never asked them for customer service before. But even though it is the Easter holidays over here/there, they responded in about 2 hours : confirming they will refund the purchase.

      No reason to be sorry - I should have been more careful and paying more attention when clicking on the 1-Click button. I just got on a roll with about 4 free books and assumed they would all be free.

      Anyway, the story has a happy ending. I've learnt to be more careful with Amazon 1-Click and hopefully others may take some of my experience to heart as well.

        Glad it worked out - I ordered a book by mistake from Amazon a few weeks ago (I could get it cheaper elsewhere) and was able to reverse the order online with no problem. So Amazon seem pretty good on that score.

    Almost got charged also, but was lucky to have recently added an additional credit card, clicked the Buy now with one click and was asked to confirm which credit card to charge to.

    Looks like the one click purchase button with the Kindle limited time offers may have raised some additional revenue for Amazon, as there would be many others out there to have purchased kindle books.

  I hope the quality has changed since 1998.

  I travelled around europe with it then and it was useless.

  majorly outdated, misleading, inaccurate.

  I renamed it "Let's go burn this stupid guidebook".

  Lonely Planet all the way.

  Loves free books - thank you.
  There is somewhere in your Amazon account where you can have a maximum $ limit (the maximum purchase price that you want to buy at). If you put this as the lowest possible $0.00, then you will have to verify each purchase over that amount (which means every time a charge over "FREE" is rung up, you have to verify or change your account details - a precaution for freebie hunters.
  So, if you only ever want to download free kindle books, then the $0.00 amount won;t matter and won;t cause any problem to you.
