Dick Smith is having 20% off on Toshiba, HP and Compaq this Saturday. Some people have mentioned this in another post but I did come across it today on cnet while waiting for the long weeekend to begin. don't forget if you have a friend with a Woolworths staff discount card that's another 5% off.

Saw this on an ad (tv), but you probably still won't get a great deal with the 20% anywho.

    Quoted:

Dick Smith is having 20% off …. with a Woolworths staff discount card that's another 5% off.

    Reply:

Staff discount doesnt stack so its another 4% off since the 20% and the 5% (also has 20% off hence 5 - 20% = 4)

    • So it's price x (1-0.2) x (1-0.05), not price x (1-0.2-0.05). Seems fair?

if they'll let you apply this to that, then yes, that'd be great :) But there were issues in the past with applying % off to already low cost models.

      I'm up.. late.. … early.. >.>

      • hmmm, I don't see why not. I presumed it was ALL Toshiba, HP and Compaq models, but you're saying it might be SELECTED or LIMITED models(typically the most expensive ones with the biggest profit margins attached to them). Need to get out my specs and read the fine print!

    • So can someone confirm whether or not I'd be able to get my 5% off on this?

      • +1

Read mrkorrupt's comment above, it would seem the 5% will apply, but it will be applied before/after the 20% discount, not at the same time. My comment to his comment explains this.

TLDR; Yes, but it will be a 4% additional discount off the original price, not 5%.

    • This laptop has been marked down to $375.

Any other good buys with the 20% off? I'm comparing the prices here to deals people got in the HN 40% sale (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1670251) and nothing great has stood out yet.

Sale includes 20% off already discounted items.

I picked up a HP Pavilion 3131TX which has an i5 and 1Gb dedicated graphics for $599.

Added on extra 2yrs extended warranty for $150 (it's a HP) so was back to the $749 sale price but at least I now have 3yrs warranty. Most places are selling this for about $1000 still so I consider this a really good purchase since you'd struggle to get a half decent i3 laptop for $600.

Was going to get a Clevo for $1000 but bills and other property costs coming in over the next 2 months would postpone that purchase. At $750, I could make the HP purchase work.

That's a bloody good laptop mate. Hope you enjoy your purchase. If you are going to be using it heavily and frequently then the extended warranty was probably a good insurance policy because from my experience, HP laptops aren't all that reliable. The HD 5650 is a sick card, look at all the modern 3D games you can play on it fluently at lower/medium detail settings : http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5650.236…

        • Yeah, the build quality does look a bit flimsy but the specs and price were good. I'll probably still use my desktop the most (dual screen setup is something I'm too use to). I do travel for work and also am studying my Masters so I'm sure this thing will be lugged around a bit. In that sense, I made sure to get the extended warranty.

  • Excellent! I was looking at a HP laptop the other day. Didn't like the price esp when extended warranty is added on but with 20% discount, the extended warranty is essentially for free which makes the laptop a bargain. Looks like I'm getting up early tomorrow!

  • Just picked up a Toshiba Satellite A660/15J Notebook (15.6in, i5, 6GB, 640GB, TV Tuner) for $911 (with Woolworths staff discount card).

    • Nice buy. I'd love to work at Woolie Group just for these extra 5% discounts ;)
