Saw this looking for a cheap school computer with full HD screen.
It's now $45 cheaper from its last posting last year. Even cheaper with cashrewards.

Can the DVD even be swapped out?
Swapping should never present an issue. But looking on amazon site this has m.2 sata slot free for up to 512gb ssd you can boot from so that would actually be a great option
Rather heavy for lugging to and from school, at 2.4kg, good otherwise.
A DVD in 2019!? They really don't care about weight.Arguably the best value for dollar laptop there is at this time
Be thankful it's not floppy
I didn’t think intel i3 had turbo boost technology???
Specs also say 1000 gb mechanical HDD xDPerformance
# of Cores 2 # of Threads 4 Processor Base Frequency 2.20 GHz Max Turbo Frequency 3.40 GHz Cache 4 MB SmartCache Bus Speed 4 GT/s OPI TDP 15 W Configurable TDP-down Frequency 800 MHz Configurable TDP-down 10 W
it does have turbo but still only dual core
buy a cheap 240gb ssd and make it the booter and the 1tb hdd can be storage
i like how companies cheap out on 6gb ram since its expensive
4+2 config running on single channel ?
or is there 3gb stick nowadays ?
4 + 2
however modern systems can do dual with 4 + 2 now
It's a 4+2GB config, Amazon reviews say it'll run on single channel memory.
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i3-8130U-Memory-E5-576-39…This model is called the E5-576-392H
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.GRYAA.001They cheaped out with older DDR3-L memory instead of DDR4, the HDD is 5400RPM (🐌) and the USB ports are pretty standard, but at least it has a FHD display and a windows precision touchpad.
@scrimshaw: Can this play any games you reckon on super low?
I am thinking anything in the top 100.
@AlienC: On that CPUs iGPU?
Unlikely. The performance on those are awful.
@N1NJ4W4RR10R: Ah damn was hoping for some sort of igpu power of some sort to shine through.
@scrimshaw: Flex mode should be available by default on contemporary computers. On this Acer, 2x2GB will work in dual channel mode and the extra 2GB on the 4GB module will work in single channel mode.

I guess a i5-8250u 8g laptop with lighter weight is expected. I got my F510UA last year for 499USD plus 20+ shipping, and then replaced+installed two SSDs.
edit: last last year, Nov 2017.
Great battery life, 13+ hrs
Quite bulky at 2.4 kgs ….
you wouldn't notice 2.4kg in a backpack ….some school books weigh more than that, and you take your bag from class to class.
@garage sale - My missus has a Lenovo laptop, which is around 2.5 Kgs. I have a Dell which is around 1.6 Kgs. Believe me once you are used to working on lighter laptops, you will hate these bulkier laptops.
how about this one at least it sold by amazon aus https://www.amazon.com.au/Acer-Touch-Intel-i3-8130U-Laptop/d…
Its has Windows 10 S, A trimmed/slimmed down version of Win10.
That's good! Means you can get a free standard Windows 10 license upgrade from the Windows Store.
My daughter has a similar 15.6" Acer for school. It barely squeezes into her backpack and is back-breaking work lugging this heifer to and from school. Not to mention it's a desk hog and after 6 months both hinges have cracked along with 50 other kid's Acers that are all copping a flogging going from classroom to backpack all day. Do your child a favour and get them a laptop that's strong, light and has a 13" or 14" screen.
strength is always a problem with laptops for schools. this is an e series laptop, which is very plasticky and more suited for desk use, we own 2 e series laptops.
For school my son has an enterprise grade laptop which is compulsorily leased via the school as they have an soe , and they refresh every 3 years and are covered for 2 screen replacements during 3 years
it’s stronger , cost almost twice as much and no extra features to an e series but school IT departments and teachers don’t want to deal with kids whose laptops don’t work during class time and reinstalling software on obscure laptops they’ve never seen.“ cindy where is your laptop”
“ being fixed”
“ you said that last week”or
e.g bios in chinese because someone has bought it of gearbest.i’m trying to get my sons school to adopt byo for some selected brands and models so we can refresh when we want and sell the old one.
it’s the same reason you wouldn’t see the e series in a business environment, it’s is targeted at home use.
15.6" laptops are basically deskbound. I tried to use one, ended up lasting maybe a week in my backpack before I returned it and got a 13.3" laptop.
our e5 stays at home or is taken on holidays, for school son has 14” laptop with all day battery.
you would need generous desks at your school if everybody brought in 15.6” laptops.
Yeah. Would only go 15.6" if it was meant for gaming otherwise smaller is fine.
15.6 inch at 1.7kg.

Just add SSD.
And wait for it to be reduced again. That ones more like a 14" shell so would work better for transportation.
Seems good specs with 6gb and full HD screen, suggest swapping the DVD for a cheap ssd for the OS and it will be decent.
