Sony failed venture into wearable fitness device

  • +21

Just in case if you are wondering why there are no photos showing the face of the smartband…it's because it doesn't have one!.

    • +1

Lol thanks. Saved me some clicks and some head scratching!

    • how do we see the time then if it.doesnt have a face

      • It's just meant to be a fitness tracker - I guess like one of the cheap FitBits, it doesn't actually replace your watch.

    • Like the faceless men of the Liberal Party?

  • +4

Was $59.95…i wouldn't even spend my spare $2 on this.

  • Yep the first iteration (without HR monitoring) was a big failure.
I'll prob save $10 and buy Fitbit/xiomi instead … Sony is only good for TV/gaming

      And cameras!

      • +9

        And headphones

        • +9

          And my axe!

    • +9

      And speakers!

      • Ah ah, fair enough, I actually do have Sony camera/headphones.
Perhaps they just suck @ wearables/phones

        • +5

Z2, Z3 and XZ Premium are great phones as well.

          • @SuiCid3: But massive and square, runined many a pair of jeans. Also waterproofing was a joke :(

    • Xiaomi band 2 is $25 at amazon au

Well yes obviously the TVs… the TVs go without saying. But apart from the Walkman, the Trinitron, the cameras, the headphones and the Xperia phones, Betamax, the transistor radio, the minidisc, … what has Sony ever done for us?

      • Playstation!

      • Lol, apart from headphones & camera, I don't see many deals on sony's "Walkman, the Trinitron, the cameras, the headphones and the Xperia phones, Betamax, the transistor radio, the minidisc" on ozbargain those days. And if it's not on ozbargain, then it doesn't exist! 😋
Sony were leading, and now they are lagging behind, despite their innovation in the past.

I was one of those 'hip' people with MiniDisc back then when everyone had those larger heavy CD walkman's.
Still have a bunch of brand new MiniDiscs and a recording deck (HiFi component).
Thinking of recording a few albums over, and in the future pretending like I am in the first Matrix movie
(in the beginning where Neo gets hacked, the disc format he puts in the computer is MiniDisc).

    Oh boy https://www.wired.co.uk/article/sony-smartband-2-review

Review: Sony Smartband 2 is the dumbest fitness tracker

    PROS
Sturdy, comfortable, and well designed; alarms and notifications work well; sleep monitoring function

    CONS
Woefully inaccurate; won't stay connected or reliably sync data; clutters phone with multiple apps

    • Still, for this price it's hard to go wrong…

      • +8

Well, with that list of cons it seems that it's real easy to go wrong.

  • Tried to purchase using 3 separate payment methods, all failed, good luck to anyone else trying

  • Not good reviews but still ordered one.

    • +3

      Lol @ your logic

      • Well true ozbargainer here

        • It's kind of difficult, if you can't even see the time

  • +1

Got one, not sure what for though

    • +5

      The junk drawer?

  • If someone loves black, it is on sale too.

  • Really bad reviews but pull the trigger. Just a small e-toy for kids.

  • +1

"Smart band 2"..I can't imagine how bad the version 1 would be

    • Part of the v1 app aimed at tracking /consolidating how much time you were spending exercising vs activity on your phone 😱 which was a good idea. But the wearable itself was terrible.

  • Page not found.. expired

  • Can’t add to cart…

  • +1

    aaand gone

  • +1

Lol they are selling the v1 for $99
    Good luck with that!

  • +3

This was a complete and utter failure. IT DOESN'T EVEN TELL THE TIME.

    • +2

Does every smart tracker need to? From the very first fitness trackers there have been plenty of products without screens on them. My old Jawbone didn't have one. I wear a mechanical watch, so I don't want a 2nd watch on my other wrist, it would look stupid. I'd prefer one that doesn't show the time. I can't imagine that I'm alone in that.

  • Just give them out to little girls as a fashion acc. Look it’s a Sony bangle!

  • For those not expecting much seems like a decent device, but…
Battery life can be quite poor for what it is.

    Copied from Amazon UK reviews:
“On the page it says the stamina mode makes the band last 5 days, i have not tested this, but i can say that it can easily do 48 hours or more on normal mode which is the average for similar wearables. For those wondering, stamina mode is when the heart monitoring sensor is turned off. This seems to be a big drain on the battery, halving the life when on even though it is used only every 15 minutes…”

On normal mode it lasts as long as an Apple Watch (which I do not own). And even as just a step counter you have to charge it every 4-5 days.
5 days on stamina mode is half of what I get from my Suunto Spartan Trainer, which gets 10-13 days total with 1 hour GPS + HR per day (I can extend that to more than 20 days by lowering the GPS quality [Currently on ‘Good’ out of “Best/Good/OK”]. I charge it every 5-6 days when it hits 50% battery left.
