  • Anyone known how much it will cost to unlock?

    • I just paid 26 bucks on ebay unlocked within 24hrs no issues. you're stuck with a YES logo on boot but the optus app can be uninstalled

And also missing 3G/850mHz used by Telstra and their re-sellers, and 4G/850mHz used by Vodafone and their re-sellers.

No, it has to be the SIM in the box.

    • Yes, you can,…but can't get the $50 gift card ( really only worth $20 as you can get a $30 pack for $5-$10 usually on sale ).

I would activate the included sim and do a $30 re-charge to be eligible , then either stay with Optus or go to other suitable carrier.

Get the cheap Optus/Other sim starter packs and join us proud Sim Sl*ts lol!

Well yeah. I meant you won't get the gift card unless you activate + recharge the SIM in the box.

  • +2

You can activate with any (optus) sim. I did it last year and only used the sim from the box last month when I needed a sim quickly.
    BUT…
You wont get the bonus gift card unless you recharge the sim from the box by 4/2/19 as stated.

Also Optus disabled some 3G Bands from memory ?
Better get the Vodafone variant for 99 Coles that has this sale price from time to time.

    • The Vodafone Huawei Y5 prepaid variant your referring to might suit some better, but there are some small but important differences.

For people who want to unlock one of these to use on Telstra network, best to get the Vodafone Y5 as it has the 3G/850mHz that Telstra uses, but for Optus and Vodafone both will work 100% for 3G but misses 4G/B28/700mHz for both Telsta and Optus, but will still work on all, just better for Vodafone as they use the included 4G/B5/850mHz.

The Y6 on the other hand will work 100% for Optus of course, will work fairly well for Vodafone but not good for Telstra.

The other differences apart from the Y6 having larger screen and a bit thinner is louder clearer speaker for the Y6.

No comparison. Equivalent is Nokia 3.
Was $89 on voda, but not currently available.

Yes, Optus has crippled it. If unlocked, it may work on Voda but not Telstra.

Honestly I wouldn't bother. Bought it for $89 for my father. He complained it was slow, he needed to tap several times to close a window/app. After disabling everything not needed, it still was slow. You start the camera, then try to close it, it sits there thinking, occasionally unresponsive. Once tried to tap to focus and no response. Was recording it with another phone and after closing the camera, the camera was still on, still recording. My y550 had faster response and still has with half the ram.

Went out and got Nokia 3. Much better choice.

    • Wow, that's disappointing to hear from a $109-$159 Huawei prepaid phone from 2018 as I remember the Y550 and Y6 Elite both being great bang for your buck for around $40-$119 also prepaid a few years ago.

I still occasionally use my unlocked Y6 Elite as a internet hotspot device ( has all 3G & 4G bands for all three telcos bar 4G/B7/2600mHz but that is not used near me ) and still find it ok to use with only 1GB RAM. The older Android 5 Lollipop might help here too.

      • +1

For the price $40, y550 was a steal.

        • Sure was. So were the $39 Y6 Elites ( after getting a $50 eftpos cards ). Still have a new spare Y6 if you want one cheap, just P.M. me.

Do you find the Nokia 3 good to use compared to this Y6 2018, screen ok and responsive enough? Is it on Android One now, or still close to stock Android Oreo ( heard it might be moved to Android One with a Pie update coming too ).

            @ozhunter68: Have Nokia 3, so… I guess I'm fine

Y6 was pretty much rebadged y550 and going by just that, Nokia 3 is better, but yes, it is quite a bit better, when you don't take the price into account. It's better than Huawei Y6 2018. My y550 had faster response than this one.
Screen is not that great when you're outside, but for the price, can't complain.

At the same price point, Nokia 3 wins. At first I wanted to get Nokia 3, but as my father's sight isn't that good, thought bigger screen was better. The fact is it's just about the same as Y6 as the 3 bottom keys are on the screen in y6 while N3 has them outside, and many times those keys on Y6 are still visible when you are using it. We go on the internet and in Y6 it just sits down. That is a lost real estate.

Haven't done the update yet, so it's still stock android, but will do when home and see what I get. Pie is coming if not already here. Didn't have time to play with it much, but will report after doing the update.

          • @ozhunter68: To add N3 is dual sim and build wise feels better. Everything is smooth and rounded. I did the update and it sits on8.0.0 with security patch 5/9/18.

Ah yes, the metal sim tray on N3 too.

Edit, second sim is 2G, not so good, except if you go overseas where they still use it, then it helps.

            • @bargainparker: Thanks for more details on the Nokia 3. Was very tempted to grab a Nokia 3 Vodafone prepaid ( single sim I suppose ) from stock I found at a Woolies near me for $89, but as I had a Nokia 6.1 already and a spare Moto G5+, I figured I did not need it. I was thinking of replacing my Huawei Y6 Elite that I use often as hotspot with cheap sims with the Nokia 3 as it has all the needed bands and nice clean up to date Android, but for that purpose it's still fine having the same Cat 4 spec as the Nokia.

That security patch of 9/18 is pretty good as my Moto G5+ is still on Oreo 10/18 so almost the same, and it will not be getting any Pie from Motorola.

One reason why I went for the G5+ is the dual 3G/4G + Micro sd slot, but I have found out that I much prefer to juggle two phones with separate sims rather than two sims in one phone. I find it a bit clumsy and like having data simultaneously on both. If travelling o.s. then could workout better.

    • Not that it's in any way comparable to the out of the box device but if you can be bothered to unlock the bootloader and flash other versions of android it's a pretty decent phone. I've flashed the pixel experience rom on it and I've been very pleased with both the performance and quality of photos provided with Google camera HDR+.

Again not something that everyone is willing to do but it has this over the Nokia 3 since it's a MediaTek chipset device vs the Qualcomm one in the Y6 2018. There's almost no community developed ROMs available for the Nokia 3 or Google HDR+ camera.
