This is my first post. Very tempting to sign the contract, but don't know if Huawei P20 pro is a good phone or not.But 80GB of data is huge.

Minimum cost over 24 months: $1,320.

As someone who defected from Pixel to Huawei; I actually like the UI and skin better than I like the Pixels (especially in 'dark mode'). I say that as someone who owned every single Nexus phone too, so take that at what it's worth.

      • I'm sure it's a decent phone but there is something about Google's own Androids that I don't find in skinned Android phones. It's the smaller things like always listening Google now, I'm so used to just saying hey Siri or Hey Google, what's the weather or where are you or what are my reminders etc. Not having such plus the software support just puts me off any skinned Android phones.

But thank you for sharing, good to know Nexus and Pixel people can get by on these. Things must be better than I thought.

        • +1

My LG V20 has always listening google assistance, I'd bet a lot of newer phones would have this feature.

          • @OpayuOnam: Really? Why do they not advertise these things? You can just walk into your room and ask the V20 what the weather is and it respond? No charger or anything connected? It was sleeping on the table.

            • @Zylam Marex: Yep, except you say okay Google, "whatever you want it to do".

Pretty sure most modern phones with newer can do it.

V20 even had inapps which is an expansion of Google assistant to local apps, it shows a quick snapshot of what's happening for notifications and messages etc… Sort of like the social hub blackberry phones.

              • @OpayuOnam: Oh wow that is really good to hear. My options have opened up a lot more. I've actually always wanted to try a Samsung or an LG but always listening is my favorite feature! Thank you for letting me know!

              • @OpayuOnam: and just so you know this is how to access it on my phone:
open google (used to be called search but now the app is just called google)
go to more tab then choose settings
-> voice -> Voice Match-> then choose the following:
                Access With Voice Match
                Unlock with Voice Match

As bonus you can also select Bluetooth headset and wired headset under voice menu for ease of use.. (it won't require unlock if you select them, as in even if it fails to match your voice it works)

I deflected from Samsung directly to oneplus didn't even consider Pixel (price too high), Huawei (green screen tint mate 20 pro, too expensive, don't like it's UI skin, too much AI processed photos not natural)

        • Yeah I've been thinking about the One Plus for years. How are they for real? Genuine stable phones? Oh man the Ai overload in Huawei is horrible!

      • HTC's original team took the phone job at google now

Will JB HIFI give us Single sim version or Dual sim version?

  • Lack of an sd card slot is a deal breaker for me on an other wise great phone. I was hoping jbhifi would do something on the note 9 today but haven't seen anything come up.

  • Not for existing customers 😕

    • +1

Yep, it's all about poaching each other's customers with telcos these days. Look at all the crazy deals from Kogan mobile, for instance.

  • Very good for capturing photos in low light but still not the best phone overall.

    • +10

Yeah, and at the rate we do things down under, it'll be a decade at least before it's widespread enough to matter. And you'll be on your fourth phone.

    • +10

No, they are excluded from providing the hardware to run the network. End user hardware is completely separate

      • +1

Indeed I doubled checked it was their 5g hardware not devices being denied from accessing the network.

    • Source please? Huawei have been banned from providing equipment to build the network. I haven't heard anything about phones not being able to connect.

    • +2

This phone doesn't have 5g anyway wtf u talking about

      • Correct, Huawei will begin rolling out 5G compatible smartphones in 2019.

  • +2

I see some comments above are very excited. Just a reminder - it is a p20 pro not mate 20 pro which are very different. P 20 pro def aisnt the best phone of 2018 lol

    • +2

It's an amazing phone and half the price of the mate 20 pro with similar specs

      • Mate 20 Pro has a "nano" memory card. P20 Pro has nothing. Also it's about 1.5x as much, not twice.

That's just one of the specs that's not similar.

        • Huawei proprietary memory card, incompatible with micro SD… So pretty much useless.

          • @Jopgun: It's kind of like comparing the XR & XS. Both slot in at different points.

The specs aren't that similar - certainly enough that one is on top.

      • The key is similar I do not think they are similar else price would be around the same. So no they are different

  • Just bought a phone last week. Huawei 3i Nova. Love it but I just wish it had a better camera. If I knew this deal was around the corner (and that Bing Lee have terrible dispatch times) I would've waited for this.

    • sell phone & sign this deal

      • +1

Guess what, I found a buyer. But now I'm thinking what will I do with 80 gigs data. I need around 30 Gigs (am on a 13 gig plan), I love having a good camera but is it worth paying all the extra $$ for? Ahhh…

        • +1

Other option sign this deal sell the phone put that back into bill & you’ll have a 80gb sim for $25-$30 depending what you sell it for, then go buy back the phone you sold lol

          • +1

@RogueWolf: Haha see below, I'm keeping this phone and the 80 gigs :)

      • +1

I got it. Thanks for the suggestion.

A few things to note comparing this to my Nova 3i

        -The Nova is much lighter
-The Nova has a slightly bigger screen, less black space down the bottom
-Rear Fingerprint sensor on the Nova, more responsive and easier to reach

I honestly just upgraded for the camera. I fell in love with the Nova 3i but its camera was a downgrade from my S7

    I read $65 per month..there a $10 discount I've missed?

Anyone had luck pouring out and back again on same day?

    • the $55 is pretty hard to miss, first thing on the page

      • Yep, didn't show up first two times, third refresh it was there…Cheers

  • 6.1" screen
    6GB RAM
    128GB Storage, non expandable

  • Well this seems to be the best to get at the moment before they refresh the F&F offer.

  • Sigh, bought one outright for the $800 deal the other day..

    • Any feedback on the phone?

      • Hasn't even been delivered yet

  • +2

Would be nice if they let existing Telstra users sign up to this. Bit of a GFY to existing users.

  • +2

I am using this phone. The camera is awesome. But that's it. None of others are impressive. The OS is pretty shit.

    • Care to enlighten us about why it’s so shit?

      • Not very stable. I have used it for 7 months, comparing with new one, it's a bit slow and a few glitches

        • Major software update due any day now, maybe that'll fix your issues

        • i can't speak for you but my wife has the p20 pro and it's solid as a rock & very snappy.

      • It's non intuitive. If you have used stock android or Samsung skin you won't like it

    • How does it compare to pixel xl 2 or 3? Thanks

      • +2

camera is amazing. battery life is absurd, go to bed after 12 hr day with 50-60% left.

        • +1

I wouldn't comment on battery life unless you can actually say how you used the phone to get it to 50-60%. Battery is one of the things that isn't black and white. Many factors influence how fast a battery will deplete. It's like some people will drive a car without accelerating at every traffic lights and others will do so, then complain how much petrol their car is using.

          • +2

@bargainparker: I'm talking she does 5hrs SOT and has half a battery left at bed. It's the best battery life phone out of any phone at the moment comfortably - 4000mah + a normal res screen is a killer combo.

I have the mate 20 pro and the battery life is decent on it but the p20 pro is in another league.

    • +1

OS is just OK. But batt life is great, display sharp and bright, and Kirin 970 chipset is still very quick. Very happy with it.

      • -3

6 months later you will know.

    • +1

poco ….no band 28 no nfc no deal ….that market has moved on even entry level phones at retailers now have nfc and band 28 ….

  • Great deal

  • +9

Just back from my local JBhifi with the phone in hand. $55 price is $65 per month minus the $10 porting credit. JB gave a tax invoice for the phone, showing $999 paid by online gift card, so I can claim TRS next week when I went overseas.

    • Do they have this offer with any other phones?

      • +4

When porting to the $65 plan, you'll receive a $10 porting in credit and $500 towards a phone (which must retail for $500 or higher). The P20 and the iPhone SE are the only two phones available for $0 during this promotion, whilst selected Samsung's generate $700 towards the cost of the phone at the moment aswell.

        • +1

Thanks for mentioning, is there a link or something to let me to have a look?

        • No deals for pixel?

        • you receive both $10/m credit and $500 credit?
jist signed up,the Telstra app shows $65/m plan with $500 phon credit, but doesn't say $10/m credit.

    • hey @couger, do you reckon you could upload invoice so I can show it them when i try to sign up?

      • It's already in their system, so no need to show them the invoice.

    • what does your Telstra app show?I signed up for this deal, the app shows my plan is $65/m plan with $500 credit.
but when I was on the phone for the porting,it was confirmed by the rep it's $65/m plan with $10/m discount.

    • Sure you can get TRS ?

  • +2

The $55 is the new discounted price of the $65 plan so they are doing $700 off the Samsung note 9 / S9 & s9+ with port ins.

  • So unfortunate I still have 6 more months left with my contract. Hopefully, next year they come up with mate 20 pro deal.

    • Had 4 months left on one of my virgin contract, decided to port over anyway as it is such good value. Just treated as I paid $124 for this new phone and get 80GB instead of 5GB monthly. I could have upgraded to Optus without any payouts, however failed to find any one of the Optus plans attractive.
I will probably sit out the two other virgin contracts ends in 6 months, unless anything else good coming up prior.

  • Can existing customers port out and port in again ?!

    • I ported out last week and tried to take this offer up at JB yesterday, started the sign up process, but failed when the system picked up I hadn't been out for 30 days yet. Don't think it'll work, hoping something like this comes up again in another 3 weeks now!

  • I imagine there will be an influx of P20 Pro phones on Marketplace/Gumtree due to this. I’m somewhat tempted to do the same but I still have 3 months left on my contract with Telechoice :( What to do???

    • Cheap out… Do what your username suggests

    • If there will be, then you can expect to sell it lower due to influx of more phones. It all depends how many will keep the phone.

    • depensd what the cost is to leave telechoice …..you could be using a new phone over christmas that is worth something, and if selling old phone now is the time as people buy used phones for kids presents … i’d hate to be trying to sell a phone after christmas in a crowded market.

    • +1

just checked on gumtree,5 brand one for sale listed within the last 24hr with receipt from jb hi fi included.

  • Excludes Telstra Pre-Paid customers!

    Well that sucks.

  • I'm interested in the Oppo R17 pro. I wonder if they would do the same deal for it?Considering it's a cheaper phone at retail price to the Huawei P20 pro

  • Does anyone know if any other carriers offer a similar plan to this for $55?

to answer my own question, this looks like a really good deal

    https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Search?phone=Huaw…

    • Which deal in particular? Your link shows a whole page of deals with different phone types for me.

  • Thats is an amazing deal!

  • +2

So the P20 Pro currently sells for $999 at JB according to their website, and the Mate 20 sells for $1,099 with a $100 JB Gift voucher. Has anyone tried and been able to get the Mate 20 by paying the extra $100 up front with this deal ?

    • Good point, I wanna know as well.

    • Isn't the point of this deal to get rid of old stock? Since the p20 has been out for a little while now.

      • so I guess this is an indirect no?

    • Went to JB this morning, they said only for P20 Pro, mate 20 will be $55 plan + $600 JB Gift card(towards phone purchase).

    • +2

Update - and to confirm as per below - NO, it's for this phone only at the moment. So I grabbed this one :-)
Also, I have now just checked my contract details online and the cost to break the contract right now (Day 1) is only $500.

After 12 months there will be no break cost !

      • Really ?! Do you have to pay device pay out fee after 12 months if port out.

      • That's another sweetener on an already excellent deal! Did your invoice also include a cost for the phone as mentioned above? Thinking of grabbing one and just wondering for TRS purposes :) The guy at JB wasn't sure what would happen until it was put through.

        • Yes, invoice is for $999. I am heading off OS on Sunday so I will get back the $90.82 via TRS.

      • That almost sounds like a mistake, since the deal explicitly says 24 months.

      • That sounds too good. So basically if I’m not mistaken:
        1. Sign up to this plan
        2. Break the contract same day
        3. Pay the $500 termination fee
        4. Sell P20 Pro for ~$700
        5. Profit $200

Alternatively, keep phone at the ‘purchase’ price of termination fee.
        Am I missing something?

        • Am I missing something?

You missed the bit about taking the phone overseas and claiming TRS before selling it.

Personally I am considering staying in contract for 12 months.

But I think that in addition to the contract cancellation fee, you will be liable for "any pro-rated Phone Credit Cancellation Fees."

      • +1

I signed up. The mobile app has two early termination charges, one of $500 and one of $780, totalling $1280. I'm quite sure the total applies.

        • Just wondering…did they invoice the phone in a way that makes it eligible for TRS?
