  • Says it comes with 8GB/6months expiry as well.

Edit. Au post has the same deal. In that case it says free twitter/DB etc. But also says "up to" 8GB included. WTF?

    • i think it depends on what time you use the data: i.e. your usage on-peak counts as double your off-peak

in which case i think you get 4gb on-peak or 8gb off, or a combination of the 2

  • So it is like a pocket wifi router, right?

    • Yes, it is.

  • yep its a 3g wifi portable router. pitty its not 4g. it says in the terms "An $80 fee applies if network locking is removed within the fi rst six months from activation, if you have recharged to the value of $80 no fee applies." i wonder does this also apply to the router or just prepaid mobiles? if it applies to this router too then you get a free $80 voucher too, thus so can you get it unlocked free too? also i wonder what the expiry of the $80 VOUCHER IS and how many GB do you get on this voucher?

4G won't be widely available until 2014 at least and it's only limited to the CBDs of big cities.

Would be nice if you frequent spots that are strong with Optus reception.

    • yeah… the data plan sounds all sweet
but optus tends to drop its 3G reception time to time
It's not as bad as THREE but it is still annoying

  • seems like a good deal so I voted plus

But i wonder how long the battery would last.
    I ordered an iPad2 3G 64GB cuz i don't wanna carry anything extra
and I can go on telstra 12GB for $150 with 12 month expiry

  • Good option for Wi Fi Ipad users imo
I bought this the other week when they had $15 off every $100, have yet to activate it though (haven't managed to get an ipad2 yet)

Be warned optus charges in 10mb blocks
So each time you connect and only load one page, there goes 10mb. Flakey connection Will cost dearly.

  • I think it's not only the DSE, but all of the shop which selling the wifi modem will have the discount. The discount actually comes from optus and I think it maybe exists for a long time. I just grap one from Strathfield shop last week.

For the WIFI modem, it comes with 8Gb data for 6 month expire, and also included $80 recharge voucher, so you can recharge later for another 4Gb (with 6 months expire period too)

If you don't need that much prepaid data in one go, a handy alternative would be Crazy John's $99 Huawei (same manufacturer as the wifi modem above) Ideos U8150 small Android 2.2 phone which can also do wifi tethering, plus it can also function as a phone or even a mini email/sms/IM/basic games/surfing/gmaps device. It has a built-in GPS too.

Couple that with your choice of data plan and you won't have 10MB blocks to worry about! And when friends/rellies from overseas come to visit, you'll have a phone for them to use.

    • It's a modem with WIFI, so you can surfer the internet with it and max support 5 PCs in the same time to connect to the internet.

      • +1

yes, just like the $99 Huawei Ideos U8150 which, in addition to allowing 5 PCs to connect to the internet over wifi, also functions as a smartphone.

        • I thought Android handsets allowed 8 devices in a hotspot, at least my Nexus One does.

        • Is this locked to Vodaphone? If so is there a charge to unlock it so it can be used with Optus?

        • yup it's locked, you can get it unlocked on ebay for about $19. There used to be a thread on gsmhosting where you could get it unlocked for free, but it seems a bit quiet now.

  • Is at all optus stores

  • Works a treat, have 1 we use when out n bout.. No problem with ipad.

  • This is ridiculous:
"Your first 30MB of usage per day will be charged at 10MB. Usage after this will be counted in 10MB increments or part thereof and includes both uploads and downloads"

    • yes..I recharged with optus 4GB end up only using 3.41GB.
