Black Friday Usenet Deals: NzbGeek Lifetime US $20, UsenetExpress 500GB Blocks US $5, Newsgroup Ninja Yearly US $30

690

This reddit list is the absolute best place to visit to find these bargains, it includes all the links direct to the deals. The main post is providers, and top comment is indexers.
Great list because it's sorted by backbone - grab an unlimited account from one backbone, and a backup block account from a different one!

My favourites bargains are:
-$20 Lifetime NZB Geek ~expired~
-$5 althub unlimited yearly
-$30 Newsgroup Ninja unlimited (updated to $30 as pointed out by user VIVh)
-$5 500gb block usenetexpress
-$10 1TB block newsdemon
-$40 thundernews unlimited

Hopefully this is alright to post here otherwise this ozb will be absolutely spammed with fairly niche deals.

~PRICES IN USD~

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2018

NZBgeek as an indexer, and newsgroup ninja unlimited have been great over the past few months. Worked for over 98% of 'items' no problems at all. If anything didn't work, it was usually something that had been up for a couple of years.

I picked up a $5 UsenetExpress as a backup block because I read it works well with ninja, so we'll see how that goes! Never used a backup before however.

Connect Sonarr to nzbgeek + sabnzbd + plex with the api keys and then all you have to do is type a show name into sonarr and everything else happens automagically.

      • +1

Is there a good noob guide on how to set up Plex with these other clients somewhere? I found Plex challenging to set up right.

        • +1

I'm sure if you dig around on the net something should come up.

If I was doing it all again I would setup plex first and configure it to my liking, then install and configure sabnzbd and then install sonarr. Sonarr sits in the middle and hooks into all of the other applications, once it is installed you then configure it to talk to nzbgeek/sabnzdb and plex.

      • +1

Would u still need usenet provider with that setup or can simply get away with indexer?
Which indexer do you use? Just missed out on the nzbgeek deal above..

        • +2

If you don't have a usenet provider you cannot download there servers. Usenet is a paid service, A paid indexer is not required but makes things a lot easier.

For tv shows the sickbeard indexer is free and works as well as many paid ones.

A couple that you can use for free with limited api and download requests:
6box, dbkitty, drunken slug, fastnzb, tabula-rasa, nzb finder, newztown

Newsgroup Ninja just reduced their annual price to USD$30/yr, along with the Tweaknews annual subscription of €30/yr would be my standouts for the provider deals this year.

    • That's amazing! Do you have a link for $30usd for ninja?

Scored ninja for 35 with price match a while ago, so if you see any lower deals I know they're pretty happy to accomodate.

        • Thanks!

        • +3

cheers for that link, worked for me :)

so long, overpriced $5 USD/month newsdemon - thanks for all the linux distros!

          • +2

@Mister Plod: I unfortunately forgot to read the "fine print" on newsdemon's site about needing to cancel the renewal on their site AND on paypal and got stung the auto-renewal. :(

            • @askgadgetguy: Ahh missed it too - cheers for that! Thankfully mine was last charged only a week ago, but you just saved me not paying for the next month :)

        • Warning for those, although may be ok for some..I followed signing up via the members page with my saved credentials (I'm with ninja m2m) and it: refused my card with a warning, still billed my card, and didn't upgrade my account.

I've followed up with contact so will see how this goes.

        • Is the deal only for BlackFriday? I still got newshosting paid until May 2019. Both are Highwind so don't see the point in switching now, but comes expiry, will probably do.

    • Thanks for sharing.

  • +9

    Primary - Ninja
    Backup - UsenetExpress 500gb
    Indexer - Geek

This makes a very solid Usenet setup.

  • +2

I would add Usenet.farm to the list for black Friday sales,

.farm shows up a lot, ie

    Previous links https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/usenet.farm

Expires Sunday 25/11, but it's in Europe, so, probably Monday 26/11 at 11am.

Usenet.farm uses abavia and highwinds combined, so it has unique retention and access to highwinds, which is now "omicron" / ninja, sic.

Nearly every Usenet company is now Highwinds / omicron, they're like iinet/TPG, buying up the smaller Usenet business, etc.

    • Yeah they are apparently good, I read somewhere they have good speeds in Aus too.

    • Farm are very good. I used them for 2 years but they are redundant if you have UsenetExpress.

Usenet Farm have not been highwinds for over a year. They have their own 30day cache then use abavia

  • These are some great deals thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP

  • What do people use as clients these days?

    • +2

      I'm still happy with sabnzbd.

    • Nzbget but sabnzb is great too

    • +2

sabnzbd+sonarr/radarr+plex+nzbhydra = my setup. NZBGet is great too but these 2 are the only ones you should use since a lot of stuff is now obfuscated and SABNZBD/NZBGet are the only 2 that can decode them properly.

  • -6

Been hearing about these lately… can someone PM me how to use these? Thanks

  • How does ninja compare to thundernews? Might ditch my monthly and give ninja a shot

    • Both highwinds. Go with whatever is cheaper. Ninja is very popular with Reddit

      • +1

Thanks - signed up for ninja. Surprisingly, they're a bit faster. Winning!

  • +2

Newsgroupdirect is doing $us10/1Tb block & $us20/2Tb block

    good speeds from US/EU.

  • thanks alot thumbs up!

  • How do these compare with astraweb? Have had good success with them so far.. even better that they don't seem to be that timely with billing?

    • +2

Astraweb is now highwinds but more expensive (it was $96/year on discount). I still have an account with them they just kinda stopped billing me since paypal banned them and I still have access 1 year later but I wouldn't recommend paying them as a main service.

Basically Astraweb offers a generic service others do on the same backbone but for double the price.

      • Sweet. Exact answer I was after. Thank you.

I'll stick with them until they raise prices… 2 X $0 is still $0 for now.

      • I'm going to keep using my free astraweb until it stops working

Will look at Ninja once that happebs

  • +1

I'm still using astraweb and they stopped charging me ages ago

  • +1

Just signed up for annual newsgroup ninja. If I immediately cancel, will I forfeit the subscription I just bought? The cancellation message is a little vague…

"Are you sure you want to immediately cancel your account?

We do not offer partial refunds and you will lose service. If you found a better deal somewhere else or need help please contact support and we will help you out."

  • How much is nzbgeek lifetime usually? My annual sub is almost up and I'm pretty impressed with them.

  • +1

If you want a huge block account, hard to beat Bulknews. Last I checked they are on the Abavia backbone (but don't quote me on that).

    https://twitter.com/bulknews?lang=en

    6TB = 38 Euro (roughly $60AUD)

256bit SSL, 30 connections, no expiry.

    Discount code = BFCM18

    Available till 1 December.

I've found them pretty good for my primary block account - maybe not quite as fast as some other providers, but given how cheap they are I'm not too fussed. Still pull 5MB/s or more most of the time.

    • +1

Very tempting.. but only 900 day retention…. Hmmmmm

Same backbone as XSUsenet that I've been using, so they may be ok…

      • +1

Fair point, to be honest I'd never even realised how low the retention was as it pretty much never lets me down. I have 5-6 other block accounts that I've accumulated over time and they are very very rarely required to complete downloads.

        • Grabbed a 6TB block cheers… no Paypal for Australia, CC only, seems secure and legit…

  • Brilliant! Thank you. Just sorted out my whole mess of different accounts & streamlined them using the deals linked from here.

  • I ended up with an annual sub from tweaknews @ €30, plus an annual sub from Ninja @ $30, plus 1TB total block from Usenet express for $10. A few extra indexers with annual/lifetime subs and I'm sorted well and truly till next black friday sales.

Also highly recommend nzb360 (Android only) to manage all this stuff. Sale on that too right now

    https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/comments/9zj4md/nzb360_black…

  • I've been with Easynews for years because of its Web search, it's $4/month now which is great value. Going to cancel and re-sign up.

  • I forgot about the $5 for 500gb I picked up from usenetexpress last year, so in true ozb style, I had to buy another one.

  • Thanks OP, just topped up my Blocknews and Cheapnews block accounts and bought the Newsgroup Ninja yearly special for my primary account.

  • How much is newsgroup ninja usually?
Might get this deal anyway, surely my free astraweb will stop working at some point

    • +1

      5.83/month ($70/yr)

However, they do have sales that are like 40-50~ a year, but 30 is the best I've seen.

They also price match other providers, but I honestly haven't seen one below 30 a year yet.

      • +1

Last January, I bought a year from xsusenet for US$22. It was a 75% off deal and the lowest I could find, but for BF, they are only offering 50% off, so I have signed up with ninja because they are cheaper, they have higher retention numbers their name is cooler. What I also like is that they have locked in the $30 per year as my renewal next year, which xsusenet would not.

    • +1

Ninja always an deal available on Reddit

It is 39.99USD yearly. I believe it may have been $49.95 in the past. If I didn't have a News Demon $3USD lifetime unlimited account I would definitely grab Ninja as a primary.

  • nzbgeek deal is closed

For people new to Usenet, I would recommend the following free programs: Alt.binz for retrieving NZB file - https://www.altbinz.net/index.php?page=downloadz

Newsleecher for traditional header retrieval of binaries groups and then downloading and decoding : https://www.newsleecher.com/software/

Binsearch is a free Usenet search engine but has limitations (1100 days indexed only, cannot find obfuscated content)

  • Total n00b here.

From reading this thread it seems you need an indexer and a provider? 2 services. I got the Newsgroup Ninja deal so I think that’s the provider done. Now do I just need to get the Indexer? Missed out on the NZB Geek deal but maybe that’s still the best option?

    Thanks

    • +1

Check out Drunken Slug. I'm with them and have been pretty happy with there performance, especially the RSS feed to SABNZBD. They have a free service that allows you 100 API hits and 5 downloads per day. A yearly fee of 10 Euros will get you 1000 API hits and 100 downloads per day, but if you're a heavy downloader, 20 Euros will get you 4000 API hits and 2000 downloads per day!
