Amazon Black Friday deal, one day only.

Oculus Go is an all-in-one standalone VR headset (does not connect to a PC or act as a phone holder). A smartphone is required for initial setup, however, to set WiFi settings etc.

It includes one controller. Both headset and controller are 3 Degrees Of Freedom — that is, you can look around at any angle and point or tilt the controller, but you can’t move around the room or move the controller through 3D space. Often recommended for media viewing more than gaming, though some of the games are pretty good. (A more gaming-focused 6DOF standalone headset, Oculus Quest, is releasing next year for US$400.)

  • Anyone comment on this? If it doesn't connect to a PC and doesn't use a smartphone, what platform does it run on? What kind of games does it play?

It runs a modified version of Android, and plays games from the Oculus Store. Some good examples other than virtual cinemas/Netflix/360 surround video are Dead and Buried (free), Virtual Virtual Reality (paid), Wander (a Google Street View viewer in VR), AltSpace (a kind of VR MMO chat program) etc.

The overall experience is ridiculously better than most phone-holder VR. Resolution and Screen Door Effect are actually better than Rift and Vive, but of course it doesn’t have the processing power for PC-level graphics. The inability to lean or walk around with your real body, or reach out with the controller, can feel restrictive though.

It is actually possible to sideload apps that allow you to stream games from a PC (e.g. play standard 2D Steam games on a virtual cinema screen or even certain VR games that don’t require positionally tracked controllers) but it’s not officially supported and requires some command line fiddling to set up. Your mileage may vary.

It's essentially a standalone version of the GearVR and will run the same selection of apps and games as the GearVR (the Samsung smartphone-powered VR headset). The benefit of this is
      1. you don't need to spend big on a phone with OLEDs and VR capable specs
      2. it can cool itself more aggressively than a smartphone (because smartphones are designed for thinness, not continuous processing)
      3. you don't run your smartphone battery down
      4. Better optics.

Note that unlike the current PC based VR headsets, this has no positional tracking, only rotational tracking (i.e. you can look around but not lean or walk around) which severely limits the types of games you can play on it. Next year there should be an Oculus Quest which is a standalone headset that does have positional tracking. This will potentially be a game changer since it opens up a lot of gameplay options which are currently only available on PC, but will likely be more expensive

At present, the I'd recommend the Oculus Go if you're interested in using it for multimedia though - it's a good device for watching movies on a portable big screen cinema and for stationary games where you just relax on the spot.

Just adding that Oculus Quest price was announced at US$400 (for the 64GB version at least).

      • Thanks for the detailed response!

  • Sounds like it goes through a cloud base system ?

The headset itself does the processing. It's similar to a GearVR but instead of having the processing done on a phone, it has its own processor and screens. It connects to the Oculus Store to buy games and apps though.

    • No, it just runs a version of Android on built-in hardware (like a phone) and installs apps from the Internet.

  • Just google it, or facebook search, theres a group that talks about it allot.
Stand alone, designed for media and light gaming. Can power with battery bank.
Perfect for watching movies on planes or in bed, or while your partner is sleeping :)
