Oculus Rift VR System $529, Oculus Go $269 (Delivered) @ Oculus

170

Black Friday deals direct from Oculus, valid “between 21/11/18 07:00 PST and 26/11/18 08:59 PST.” Price includes delivery and GST.

Oculus Rift

Includes: Oculus Rift headset, 2x Oculus sensors, 2x Touch controllers, all required connecting cables, and seven free VR apps (available after you set up Oculus Rift + Touch), including Lucky's Tale, Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front, and Robo Recall.

A third sensor is recommended for roomscale setups, which would add $89. Make sure you have the required USB ports available. (For small-to-medium sized rooms the two included sensors in opposing room corners using good-quality USB extension cables is workable, though.)

Oculus Go

is a standalone mobile headset (does not connect to a PC). It includes one controller. Both are 3 Degrees Of Freedom — that is, you can look around at any angle and point or tilt the controller, but you can’t move around the room or move the controller through 3D space. (A 6DOF stand-alone headset, Oculus Quest, is releasing next year for US$400.) A smartphone is required for initial setup.

$269 is for the 32GB version. The 64GB version is $339. There is some free software on the store (e.g. Dead and Buried).

Held its value pretty well. Paid $429 usd 1 year ago

  • Is Vive still the better option jumping into VR?

    • Much of a muchness

If you can get it for a similar price perhaps (preferably from a retailer who handles warranty issues themselves, as trying to get HTC to honour the warranty can be challenging to say the least). At ~$800 though, no.

Edit: With a couple of notable exceptions: If you have a roomscale play space larger than about 3m by 3m, or if you can’t run USB cables to suitable sensor locations but can get power cables to those locations. You also need a lot of USB ports for Rift — 3xUSB3 and 1xUSB2 — though in the worst case it is possible to get a PCI USB addon card.

From what I've read Oculus is slightly tricker to setup and move, but is better when fully setup, including that third sensor mentioned. Vive is easier to setup, easier to move to different locations has less issues but the final experience is just a little less than the Oculus experience.

I own the Oculus Rift and can attest to it being a fantastic when setup and Robot Recall is really immersive and fun. It is also a pain to setup and I've issues with tweaking games to get to work well. Saying that, the Oculus software has updated and some of the games I imitially had difficulties with are much better now.

Pretty good deal - just make sure your pc is fast enough (think 1050ti gpu or above), and has enough usb ports that are preferably usb 3.

Oculus website should have a VR compatible test you can download. Either that or you can use the one on Steam.

Bought my Rift when I was in the states for roughly the same price, big improvement from my PSVR I purchased last year's Black Friday sale.

    • for Full fat VR yes, Go no.

From what I've seen on the Go, its not that great for gamimg, but a great device for media content.

Imagine travelling abroad or for a conference, you get back yo your hotel room, strap on the Go and lay down on your bed, watching a movie as if you had your own private cinema screen. In higher end VR setups if you lean, you can look over things like edge of buildings or even over a table. In Go it cannot register that leaning motion and heavily detracts from the VR experience in gaming.

Agreed. As someone who used to use Gear VR when travelling, it is really good for watching content at 720p or lower. Oculus Cinema is great for playing 3D cinematic movies.

  • By the way, I see that Oculus is currently running a referral system that may be able to save you an extra 10%. From the rules it doesn’t seem like I’m allowed to link to it here though.
