Sydney to Beijing/Guangzhou, China from $343/ $385 Return on Sichuan Airlines/Hainan Airlines (Nov-Early Dec, Jan-Apr)

610

Sichuan Airlines has been operating out of China for 30+ years, and has a great name for its frequent flyer program - the Golden Panda.

Hainan Airlines is the largest civilian-run air transport company and the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in the People's Republic of China, and tenth-largest airline in Asia in terms of passengers carried.

Hainan Airlines is part of a very privileged club of which only a handful of carriers belong to. In February 2016 only Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, Garuda Indonesia and Hainan Airlines were certified five-star airlines, awarded by Skytrax, the global airline quality program.

A deal like this doesn't come along often, getting to China return for under $400.

  • Hainan Airlines is the largest civilian-run air transport company, the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in the People's Republic of China, and tenth-largest airline in Asia in terms of passengers carried.

I’m a bit confused around the first statement.

    • To be fair, I had to look it up too. Civilian-run enterprise is a type of company or enterprise to describe a non-state-owned enterprise (state-owned enterprise including companies owned by the state, the central and regional government) in the People's Republic of China.

      • The backdrop is that an enterprise is state-owned by default.

    • +12

Instead of directly owned by the Chinese government, its indirectly owned by the Chinese government.

Chinese companies do not get big unless CCP allows it.

      • +1

Yeah, the bigger they are the stronger the ties.

        • +3

Same is true of big Western companies

          • @[Deactivated]: Bro, don't take it personally. Sometimes facts are sharp.

I met lots of Chinese who moved here permanently, they don't want their children to live in China permanently, just because of state…

            • @Enjj0y: No, I don't. I'm stating a fact.

          • +2

            @[Deactivated]: Nope.

CCP decides which companies can get big.

In the West. Big companies decides which politian they buy.

      • +1

That's how some Western governments make you believe so that they can kick out any Chinese companies they want.

      • +3

In some countries, rich controls government then control the companies. In others, rich control s companies then controls government. Don't be fooled. Aupost, Telstra,NBN Co. Qantas,Airbus, Boeing. In fact, tell me which airline company isn't backed by government.

  • Does anyone know where the coldest place I could get to on this deal would be, say in late February?

    • +1

If you can find a cheap flight from Beijing to Yakutsk, that'd certainly do it…

      • +2

Thanks. I'll look it up. Hoping to avoid new year but still be around somewhere interesting and cold :) QLD is not the place to be for that time of year 😊

        • +2

If you're a bit mad, there's also a race around the frozen Lake Baikal during winter. I've been during summer, but it looks … insane: https://www.theadventurists.com/ice-run/

          • @beatthatflight: I swam in the ice off northern Japan this year.
But unfortunately I'd need a licence, cycling ability and an amazing travel insurance provider to do that race. Sounds breathtaking though!!!

    • +1

      Beijing still fairly cold then

    • +1

Beijing will be -10'C - 0'C over winter.

      • I swear it was-20 c some nights i was there

    • +3

Try Harbin, which is not the coldest city in China, but pretty much the coldest big city you could possibly get a cheap flight to.

      • +2

Go Harbin and see the ice festival, pretty amazing stuff.

        • Always have wanted to go, have you been there yourself?

Mostly stay in Shanghai so Harbin always seems a bit far away plus I've never been there during spring festival.

          • @TheOneWhoGotAway: I haven't unfortunately, my friend went last year and said it was amazing. I would love to go one day.

        • Yes. Would highly recommend!

There's ice structures/building that they make using ice bricks, best to see this at night as they're lit up. Then there's the snow sculptures, which are carved from hard, compacted snow - see this during the day.

Which destination does my luggage holiday in?

  • hainan airlines are actually pretty good. flew them before. solid.

    • Yeah was looking into them before I posted, and wow, really impressed.

    • Nice, can you compare them with Qantas or China Eastern or other similar airlines? The flight to Beijing must be really long so you'd want to be comfortable 😬

  • Anyone able to comment on a comparison of Hainan vs China Southern? Need to travel in late Feb 2018 & searching for the best direct fare.

    • +1

      Hainan is pretty good

    • Also Intrested to know for future. And luck from other sources?

  • +3

I strongly recommend to google sudden death of the CEO of this airline a few months ago in France. It could be a Jason Bourne sequel .

Put in a bit imagination, anything can be much more thrilling than how it is, I guess. Like G. W. Bush might be secret brother of Ben Laden etc.

  • +1

Good price to Guangzhou but 19 hrs total time to get there from Sydney, no thanks.

    • Should be able to get direct flights. To gz

      • Dont think they fly direct, have been searching for a number of dates and cannot find any direct.

  • Great price. Thanks for sharing.

  • +2

nice price, Don't forget visa cost as well

How many cans of baby formula can i take on board?

  • +2

I flew them last year to Qingdao. It's a full service airline. The seats were comfortable and food was good. There was actually more leg room thanks Qantas planes that go to LA. Thinking about going again next year.
