Can someone with more business knowledge explain that to me? That seems to me a bit like taking high margin, high value product off the shelf and basically inviting your customer to go to your competitor instead, all so you can have a sale on lower value crap no one wants. If it's a solid business strategy it sure as hell isn't intuitive.
It wasn't like this before JB Hifi bought them out. JB doesn't want items that are sold in its stores to be discounted highly by the Good Guys. They now only make the good guys to use eBay sales to push slow moving stock with high margin.

tl;dr: Not a priority and not in their best interests.
The vast majority of afluent ebay customers will use the ebay mobile app, or the desktop website. Those who have older or underpowered phones won't be spending as much money on ebay, hence aren't worth the development effort.
Ebay powersellers will use the App and the website as well.
Additionally, it's in Ebay's best interests to get you to install their app, as it gives you popups about items they think you'd be interested in, and probably gathers a lot of data about you for better profiling. There's no reason for them to give you a less invasive alternative.
