If you are discreet, you can drink your own duty free grog. They don't mind if you don't flaunt it too much ie put the bottles out of sight.

I usually grab a couple bottles of coke from the vending machine in the lounge post check in, then just pour the little booze bottles into them. I've got a cup with ice for my coke a few times from the air hosts but that's getting a bit fancy

the melbourne to brunei part is operated by Hi fly
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDj5xAqh6uM

in this example it is operated by Air Malta- reviews of Hi fly are mixed- older planes, less inflight entertainment etc (not as good as Royal Brunei)

I think they are using a 1980s airbus which used to be part of Air Lanka

the connecting flight is 90minutes after landing
assuming they will delay the 2nd flight, if for some reason the first one is running late
if they do not- be aware that there may not be daily flights

also hopefully in 90 minutes they will be able to transfer your checked in baggage (if hi fly was not involved it would have not been an issue)

    • The Airbus A340 involved here is a 2000 Build. QF A330s were built in the same year.

      • Good to know
        2000 is better than 80s :)

    • The HIFly is a temporary measure while one of their 787 is grounded due to additional engine maintenance requirement from rolls Royce.

This temp arrangement should finish this week and back to the usual 787.

and they have daily mel-bwn-london flights.

      • In my situation eg I am flying to Dubai on Sunday. If I miss my connecting flight I hope I don't have to stay in Brunei till Tuesday :)

Same airline hi fly, different second route

        • Ok. From 28 oct, they will be decoupling dubai from the london route. unfortunately, dubai will no longer have a daily schedule.

are you flying this Sunday? otherwise, they will be reverting to their own 787 next week. the wetlease arrangement with Hi Fly should ginisb this week. I think part of the reason they had to wetlease was they need to refit their 787 for the direct london route.

          • @redforever: yes unfortunately this Sunday
which is why I am hoping between Hi fly and R Brunei
            a. They don't lose my checked baggage
            b. they get there on time, as I have only 85 minutes to connect

next flight Tuesday in case I miss my first one

When I last flew RB a couple of years ago, the stopover from memory was closer to four hours
which was dreadful given that airport resembles something from the 70s, and for the most part did not have air conditioning
no complaints with the actual flight though

            • @docians: I see. Good luck.
Given sunday is their inaugural one stop mel to london flight, I wonder if they can manage to find a 787 for the mel-bwn leg as well. after all, they should be getting their 787 back with the hifly arrangement ending soon.

Regardless, hope you have a nice trip to dubai.

              • @redforever: just checked the website; has now been updated
it no longer says Hifly for the first leg

  • This flight is also 1 stop now, Melbourne-Brunei-London.

Used to be extra stop at Dubai.
