      • but free postage on ebay so total is less

        • Dude, I was only kidding about the $1. It's way less, postage is around $12 more plus you get the free Internet security software thing.

By the way, it seem like they got on to that whole "buy on eBay and don't pay postage" thing as it seem like they have remove the Free postage from that link, it's now "AU $19.00 Regular Parcel With Tracking". Oh well at least you don't have to pay that extra $6 credit card surcharge crap, although they seem to have added that to the postage charge now.

For those who are contemplating upgrading the ram in this Gigabyte notebook, it comes with one 2Gb stick of DDR2 800MHz ram. Umart sells DDR 800MHz notebook RAM for about $39. Second ram slot is under the keyboard though so it could be a bit fiddly to upgrade.

Online Computers also cannot source larger batteries for this model… I'm having a hard time finding one on eBay too. Hopefully this laptop saturates the market a bit to warrant larger sized batteries becoming available.

Still, as a cheap desktop back up, this is a pretty good lappy and 2Gb or RAM is sufficient for word proecessing, spreadsheets and internet browsing. I see myself needing a more portable and powerful laptop in the future so my folks will probably inherit the Gigabyte.

got the laptop today…amazed at the build…screen when closed has abit of gap so does move abit…built is good…abit like the cheaper toshiba models… screem is different..i can see the square blocks of the screen..not as smooth.. happy for $411 delivered

    • Funny that you say it's like a cheaper Toshiba model. I've been looking into how to access that second ram slot and found this guide for a Toshiba laptop.

      http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-1905…

Seems Toshiba likes to put the second RAM slot under the keyboard too. I wonder if the Gigabyte is rebadged Toshiba?

  • I have purchased this notebook as a gift for somebody in Italy. Does anybody know how the international warranty works on this?

    • +1

i assume you take it to a gigabyte repair centre in italy - i am missing something here … ?

      International warranty is international warranty

Thanks - hopefully it's that straight forward :)

Sometimes freight to and from the service centre will be excluded for a computer outside the country of origin. Your friend may have to pay freight to and from Rome/Milan (perhaps beyond).

Asus waived this for my American laptop, so even if this is a caveat for Gigabyte, it may not matter.

    • I have the warranty card right here, it say the battery and AC Adapter is covered for one year only, from the date of purchases.

  • If you want a low end laptop that can run games, I think the Compaq (HP) 621 is better value. I just bought one brand new for $479. The CPU is better (Pentium T4500 2.3 GHz), though not by much. However, the big advantage is the dedicated 512MB ATI graphics (Radeon HD 4350), which is very uncommon in a sub-$500 notebook. Specs are also better in a number of other areas: b/g/n wireless, 2.0MP webcam, and 6-cell battery. And you get HP customer support. All for an extra $80. I am going to try out a few games and will report back :) PS - I just replaced Win7 with XP, so no need for any more than 2GB RAM :)

    • I just replaced Win7 with XP, so no need for any more than 2GB RAM.

      Why did you do that?

      • I run XP on my main desktop as well. It's faster (consumes far less RAM than Win7), and games run faster on it (DX9 games, obviously).

        • XP probably consumes a little less memory than 7 but there wouldn't be a huge difference and considering that RAM is so cheap I don't see this being an issue. A 2GB RAM module is around $40. XP is a 10-year-old operating system.

        • Let me add to that, have you tried Win7 with 3GB or 4GB RAM? It will run even better and faster than with only 2GB RAM. I find it hard to believe that with modern processors and graphics XP is significantly faster (if at all) than Win7.

        • On a low end system such as a Celeron or Pentium notebook, XP makes the most sense as it's lighter and less resource hungry. With a high-end Core i5/i7 desktop, sure, go for Win7. However I'll most likely be sticking with XP for another 3 years until 2014 when the support runs out.

        • A Pentium T4500 is not a low-end CPU. It's classed as a high mid-range CPU:
          http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Pentium+Dual-…

It outperforms many Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Coupled with the Radeon HD 4350 and with the addition of another 2GB RAM (4GB total) your system would fly with Win7.

        • It's low end. Those synthetic benchmarks are pretty useless. The i3 is mid-range, while the i5/i7 are high end. It only has 1MB L2 cache and 800 mhz FSB, which will majorly limit it's performance. My 4-year-old Core 2 Duo desktop from 2007 has 4MB L2 and 1333 mhz FSB, to give you some idea!

        • Yeah well that's a desktop CPU, they are nearly always higher specced compared to mobile CPUs. What is it, probably an E6xxx? Have a look at that page I linked to, the E6550 is actually ranked lower than the T4500 even though it has 4x the L2 Cache, faster FSB and higher clock speed. You can't make straight comparisons between desktop and mobile CPUs, and older technology against newer technology. It's not comparing apples with apples.

I wouldn't call cpubenchmark useless. It's the most accurate comparison you can get for CPUs out there. From the cpubenchmark website:

This chart comparing CPU benchmarks is made using thousands of PerformanceTest benchmark results and is updated daily.
