        • I just rang Vodafone Care (+61 414 141 414) to ask as I actually didn't know. Was advised Vodafone Pocket wifis are unlocked. He said you can buy them at Vodafone stores for about $80. (Mine came free with a 12 month plan about 10 years ago; still works fine).

They currently offer a $19 a month post paid plan (12 months) with 3GB a month that comes with a free modem. Would have to do the math on that to see if worthwhile for you!

I have a couple of very old Virgin mobile broadband modems (1 usb modem and 1 *mini wifi modem) still in boxes, that were used prior to my Vodafone wifi modem. Very unlikely to be 4G; HSPDA likely, even lucky if 3G! Don't want them, so if anyone interested DM me.

          *Virgin mobile box says … "HSPDA+ ready, GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz UMTS 900 / 2100 MHz …." like I said; very old.

        • Check out this deal on a Vodafone 4G modem $29 … with 5GB:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/408274?utm_source=subscrip…

    • Why buy a wifi modem if you can just use a spare iPhone?

      • Handy for non-sim ipads and tablets too.

        • +1

What I meant was if you have a spare iPhone lying around, you can put the sim in and use it as a hotspot (which will then allow all your other devices to access the Internet) so no need to buy a wifi modem

    • Check this 4G Vodafone pocket wifi modem deal out $29 that I just saw tonight:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/408274?utm_source=subscrip…

  • Are these phone sims good to use in a pocketwifi. Would like to use it just for the data.

    • Yes.

    • Yes. We use ours when travelling rather than use public wifi's. My mother is still waiting for NBN so still using her Vodafone pocket wifi at home for all data.

  • Do they deliver SIMs to parcel lockers?

    • No, as envelope does not qualify as parcel.

      • Thanks. I've read Australia Post sometimes make exceptions but I guess it's too risky to depend on anyway. I think Kogan doesn't allow actual parcels to be delivered as well.

I've never used a parcel locker but my plan was to exploit Kogan and other deals while travelling. I guess parcel lockers aren't a good hack for that. Is there a budget alternative to PO Boxes where you can receive letters from around Australia?

        • +1

Yes, it is up to AusPost discretion; I had that problem once and they did not advise they were holding an envelope for collection at yet another post office; messy! I use the parcel lockers all the time for parcels though. System works well, secure, and you receive emails/sms to say ready to collect and code to use. Never had to use membership card; just keep to remember parcel locker account number code. Once you open the parcel locker account you can switch your preferred post office at will online.

I imagine you could have your post delivered care of "certain" post office, produce id over counter to collect, I guess. They used to do that, but not sure if that is still the case or even how long you have to collect … don't think a viable solution; maybe hold a week or two at most.

Sounds possibly best you have all mail delivered to a friend, then get them to forward mail on to you now and then in bulk when you are settled for a time. Assume Post Office would only keep mail for a very limited time.

I cannot recall if Kogan uses AusPost or couriers.

          • @JediJan: Thanks for all the info.

            • @peterpeterpumpkin: You are welcome. When I lived in Cairns there was a large transient population of travellers; many used to collect mail over the counter at Post Office. Not sure about now though.

          • +1

@JediJan: They use Auspost for the SIMs

  • Only for new customers.. sigh! High time Kogan starts offering these deals to the existing customers so that they don't have to play 'switch and immediately come back' game. Doesn't make any difference to Kogan but saves hassles for the existing customers.

    • To their credit though when Kogan ups the GBs on their new deals existing customers on same also have been receiving the increased GBs. We have 3 separate (and all different) prepaid phone 365 day accounts with them now; all had the GBs increased over the year. I think we will be likely to renew with them when each of the 365 days are up.

      • +1

Agree, hence only this expectation. It's a practical thing to do for them. It's a bit of a hassle for customers when the plan ends and you want to continue with Kogan.

        • Yes, agree. They would be guaranteed of us retaining them if they did. We have received pretty good service from Vodafone and now Kogan.

  • It's $3.90, where do you enter the KGN2018 code.

    • +2

      At checkout.

  • Says 2 uses per customer, but somehow managed 3 redemptions. Nice.

  • Thanks great deal and great timing, need to port out and back to Telstra in 30 days for JB HiFi deal

  • +1

I purchased one just a couple of days ago for $1.95, ripped off 45 cents.

  • How do you use the Groupon voucher? Cost $3.90 and no Kogan code was provided :(

    • KGN2018
      At checkout.

  • Anybody got it delivered yet?

    • Not I, but I had a spare sim card that Kogan Mobile sent me when we ported over to a few 365 day prepaid plans; used that. Took only a few minutes to activate and the data show.

      VERY IMPORTANT:

Turn OFF the automatic renewal (before end of 30 days) or you will be charged $49.90 for the following month/s !!!!
      Ouch!

      • Is that Groupon voucher code = Kogan mobile voucher code?

I already have a lot of free SIM from Kogan.

        • +1

If you cannot *find the "activation" code on the Groupon voucher do an online chat… few mins if that. They gave me the code there and followed up with it as an attachment in an email.

The activation code is 10 numbers long.

Yes, I am happy I kept that spare sim now; have rellos arriving soon from OS for a fortnight, so I activated it and posted it asap.

          • I couldn't find the code on the Groupon voucher at the time also; others seem to have had the same problem. The REAL Groupon voucher (with code) came as attachment in the email.
          • @JediJan: The is one call G Voucher Code and one Security Code

The G Voucher Code is 10 digits may be this is the one, it didn't say activation code.

            • @superforever: Yes, I checked back on the attachment Groupon sent and it is the "voucher" code … that is the activation code.

Ps. Those sim cards usually expire if not activated within 12 months.

If you needed a 4G pocket modem ($29) I just noticed this deal tonight:

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/408274?utm_source=subscrip…

When you set up the account don't forget to turn off that automatic renewal … or it will cost $49.90 after 30 days.

              😁

  • im very new to this, so i pay 1.5$ and get a sim card, pop in my phone i get 32G data for the month?
do i need to active it ? if i buy 10 of them, by the time next year, will i be able to use it?

    • Voucher must be redeemed by 10/11/18

      • Person is also not supposed to hold more than 5 active sim card accounts also; per the online activation process.

    • kogan selling the same one for $0.49

      • +1

Oh no! Now I feel ripped off for having paid $1.50

  • The first SIM card from the first Groupon deal just arrived today…and it was apparently dispatched after a week. This deal hasn't even been dispatched for me yet but the later Kogan one has??

  • Got this "Your order for the 30-day prepaid sim plan with 32GB data is on its way to your doorstep, and should arrive within 21 days of your original purchase."

    21 days XDD

  • +1

    Got this email today

Here is your unique redemption code:
    XXXXXXXXX
    How to Redeem:
Redeem by: 10 Nov 2018 *Although your voucher must be redeemed by 10 Nov 2018, the SIM card itself is able to be activated after that date, but must be activated within 365 days of purchase - if you wait longer, it may not work.

The PDF in the "View Voucher" link in my Groupon Account has a different Voucher Code and indicates that the Voucher must be used by 11/11/2018.

So how do I get 365 days to activate the SIM when I have to use the voucher by 11/11?
Do I need to do anything else to 'Redeem' by 10th Nov?

    • +1

I think what they're saying is the voucher must be activated by 10th Nov on any Kogan sim card.

The sim card you receive(they seem to be taking a while) can be activated within 365 days.
If you try to activate the sim card after 10th Nov 2018, but within 365 days, you only get to activate the sim, but don't get the voucher to work with it?
Edit: Some of us have spare Kogan sim cards lying around. I guess Kogan are putting a 1 year limit on them to keep the number of sims out there that they have to keep numbers reserved for? The sims have no credit, but come in handy if you buy a voucher(you can activate in 30 mins without having to wait several days for one to be posted).

      • +1

        Correct.

Activate using the voucher code by 10th November.

If you don't the sim card can remain usable with another (purchased) activation code, so long as activated within 12 months.

So, if you want to use the current activation code deal do so by 10th November, or you will have to "buy" another activation code for the sim card to be usable, within 12 months.

Not absolutely certain but I think all brands of sim cards need to be activated within 12 months of purchase or they become void. Maybe to do with keeping a certain number of mobile numbers available to use as allocated mobile numbers are actually limited … that sounds confusing I know!

  • +1

    Ok now I'm confused…

I thought the Groupon voucher was "redeemed" when the Kogan SIM was ordered, which was obviously going to happen before 10/11/18. So then you effectively get up to 365 days to activate your Kogan 32GB and use it for the following 30 days. This was the impression I got from the early comments, basically that the 32GB was tied to the SIM rather than to the Groupon code. I was planning to activate the 32GB over xmas to use when we go on holiday.

Now if what I'm reading is correct. The Groupon voucher code and the Kogan 32GB code are the same thing, and I have to activate my 32GB by 10/11/18 or I lose it (even though the SIM can be activated with no data up to 365 days later).

Does this mean I've just burned $1.50?

    • +3

I know this all sounds pretty confusing, especially as buying through Groupon. (I had to do online chat with Groupon to receive the correct 10 digit "voucher" - activation code)

Yes, must activate this particular mobile sim deal to get the 32 GB by 10/11/18.

The sim card will still be "usable" to activate on other deals though for 365 days (use either mobile number shown on sim card pack or port over another existing mobile number … not with Kogan though as has to be "new" mobile account). So don't destroy the sim card … yet.

Sim cards usually cost $2 if you need one and seem to take a week to arrive. So, if you cannot make use of that 32 GB for 10/11 - 09/12, PERHAPS (or see last para*) I would just hold onto that sim card and listen out (on OzBargain or Kogan Mobile etc.) for new Kogan mobile deals coming out. That way you have the sim card ready to activate at a moments notice without waiting for another sim card to arrive.

No guarantee better Kogan Mobile deals will come out before Christmas but very likely as there were several last year.

Hope that helps a little, even though it is only $1.50.

In my situation, I had a spare sim card handy so I used that one to activate the $1.50 deal, and posted it immediately overseas, for friend arriving from OS on Monday for a few weeks. Not bad at all!

I had also just purchased (before the $1.50 deal) a $4.90 one direct from Kogan Mobile. Don't know yet what I will use this for, although I may use it to see if I can recharge an existing Kogan prepaid mobile plan for a month. Same deal; 32 GB, 30 DAY XL prepaid plan. THAT DEAL HAS AN EXPIRY DATE OF 28/02/19 … so a longer time period to "activate" that deal. That sounds like your best plan for now, although I don't know if there is anything better coming.

Maybe ring Kogan Mobile and see if you can pay an additional $3.40 to switch to that $4.90 offer, which gives you the longer expiry date, for the very same deal. They should issue you with another activation code to use I imagine. Quote the Groupon code etc. when contacting them. Perhaps they could activate it for you then when you are ready. I have found Kogan Mobile to be helpful with my questions in the past. Phone: 12612.

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

Don't have any idea when that particular offer may expire.

            ----------

*** Most important to note (Paramount):
ENSURE when you set up online account (on activation) TURN OFF the "automatic renewal" on the account or you will be slugged $49.90 for the 30 days thereafter!

            ----------

Hope that helps a little … and I have not made any errors in the details.

    • yep you burned $1.50. If it makes you feel better I burned $4.50 on 3 of these thinking to use over Christmas and also only get one bar in my house :(.

  • Given that the voucher codes from this deal expire tomorrow, I tried to activate mine earlier today. Like some others here, I received two different voucher codes; one to be found within my Groupon account, and another which was received in an e-mail. However, neither of them worked; both say "Invalid Voucher". When I called Kogan support about it, they informed me that both of those voucher codes had already been redeemed, and that I would need to contact Groupon about it. So I contacted Groupon, who are going to investigate, but said to allow seven days.

    Glad it was only $1.50.

    • Do an online chat with Groupon; should be much faster.

      • I did. They then asked that I reply to the transcript e-mail with a screenshot of the problem, which I've done.

        • Fingers crossed they fix it for you.

          • @JediJan: They offered me my $1.50 back as a Groupon credit, valid for 30 days. I think I'll pass.

    • Happened to me as well today. Both invalid Voucher. I contacted them online. Still need to wait for their reply.

    • I just activated mine. At first I used the one they sent via email which didn't work. Then I logged in my groupon account and found another voucher and luckily that one worked!
Don't know why they sent an invalid voucher. 🤔

  • Wow invalid voucher too - looks like it was really the 10th, not the 11th on top of the voucher

  • could someone kindly help me with how to activate this prepaid sim card?

i insert the sim onto my mobile
    then i went to koganmobile.com.au/activate
    put in my details
and then now kogan asked me either voucher code or i need to buy plan

    • +1

Select ‘I have an email with a voucher code’ and enter the 10 digit voucher number.

The vouchers from this particular deal have now expired, so if you need a new one they’re $0.99 here or PM me / turn on your PMs and I’ll help you out.
