Duracell charger + 4 AA NiMH batteries OR 24 AAA alkalines $9.99 (+ $5.99 delivery)

110

This deal has come up before, eg:
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32118

I've bought several of these chargers and have been very happy with them.

It is not described as a smart charger, but certainly functions like one: each battery is charged independently and it does not use a timer or trickle-charge.

  • It's been about 8 years since I last bought a charger. It was an Energizer and it took 15 hours to charge the batteries. I still have all my old Energizer AA nimh 2300mAh batteries. Would I be able to use them in this charger, I wonder?

    • +1

Definitely and it will certainly take less time to charge them up.

The 4aa are those of low self discharge similar to Sanyo envelop.

charger and nimh batteries sold out, AAAs still going though

Energizer NiMH batteries are dreadful. I have no-name and Aldi ones that perform better than those poxy energizer ones. Most of them won't hold a charge after a while… definitely not good enough for a camera.

I heard that they changed the formula. but I am unwilling to take a risk on them.

    • Hopefully your comments do not apply to these Duracell ones, seeing as I bought quite a few with the earlier deal!

      • Sorry, my bad! I dunno where I got Energizer from. Must have had too many beers this arvo LOL

    • Yeah I've had pretty bad experiences with rechargeable Energizers a couple years ago, might be able to shoot 5 photos or so before it says low power. Haven't bought one since then.

I bought 4 packs in the previous bargain sell and it charged very well. I have tested these batteries out with my Maha MH-C9000 and it is very close to their stated capacity. These batteries are made in China but only 50mah less than the Japanese made Eneloop.

  • sold out already

  • I sure hope those rechargable duracells are the white top ones…
If so, then those lucky enough will have bought a good bargain.

    • +1

I bought these a from 1-day a few months ago. They aren't the white top Duracells (i.e. rebadged Eneloops), but rather the black top rebadged Rayovac Hybrids — they compare pretty well to the Eneloops I have. Still a pretty good deal for a smart charger and 4 LSD AA's.

  • does that mean I can charge different type of batteries together? i.e 2 of these and 2 of other brand batteries?

    • +1

Yes, as long as the batteries are NiMH. The charger is sold out now, though, if you were still hoping to buy. ;)

  • $6 postage kills the deal.

      You're kidding right???

Just a word of caution bought both the NIMH and the standard alkaline battery last time and the AAA's leaked after only a few months use in the TV remote and damaged it!!!Maybe it was a bad batch or even a cheap copy, but be careful when using on expensive equipment with the Alkaline, the NIMH ones are Ok but nothing like the Eneloops in holding the charge.

    • +2

Seems like you got a bad batch.

I bought the same last time around, but I've had no issues whatsoever with either the AAA's or the ActiveCharge AA's! Mine perform very close to the Eneloops I got from DSE in the last special on those too! :)

    • +2

Yeah I got a set of the NIMH AA last time and they've been fantastic. This charger is pretty well regarded from what I've read on forums: not too fast (which apparently is better for the life of the battery) and charges individually and doesn't rely on a timer (measures each battery for when to stop).

Happy to be proven wrong if anyone's read/experienced otherwise.

An alternative to Eneloops are Varta LongLife Accu's — the average price is $29 from Dick Smith and with 4 AA batteries you get a charger that supports dual channel charging, delta-V charging, temperature sensing, trickle charging and LCD screen indicator.

The battery itself is comparable to an Eneloop (I haven't got time to benchmark them) but the fact that it comes with a better than average charger is worth the money.
