    • +1

      Happy Bday!

    • Happy birthday, ya turd!

  • -1

    all registered. thanks

  • No Auto One this year. I was hoping to save on some high temp silicone.

  • So is the fact that you can only use the offer once per merchant a new thing this year? Too bad cause $20 Opal top ups each day for a week would have been nice.

Missed out on participating last year so this is my first time registering.

    • +1

Not a new thing. But doesn't stop you from topping up Opal cards from different stores…

  • +6

Does anyone else think that it is a bit ridiculous how excited everyone gets over this deal? A saving of $50 or $100 or maybe $150. Nothing to sneeze at, sure, but hardly going to change lives.

In comparison one good cc deal could net 10 times those amounts.

Just trying to understand the hype. Am I missing something?

      Most ozbargainers have 5+ cards

      I myself have 12 and I know a few that have 20.

The more you have, the more you save on everyday purchases. It's also a time to stock up groceries, meat etc for the upcoming months

Also a popular purchase is Opal and other transport cards topups

      • 12 cards? I'm guessing this precludes you from churning other credit cards? Curious how much value you get per year from these 12 cards?

        • +1

          Savings so far

Shop small $600 on groceries (this month)
Amex Vogue $1200 on gift cards
BP app offer $240 on fuel
BP in January $120 on Coles Myer gift cards
Red energy offer $400 on gas and electricity bills

There are more but I can only remember these ATM

All cards are free except the platinum edge which costs me $60 after I sell the travel credit for $140

        • +1

Don't think most ozbargainer have 5+ Amex cards. Must be limited to elite ozbargainers like you @easternculture

          • +5

@ujwols: U'd be surprised how many people have 5+ cards, its not hard as you can normally have 4 supp. cards for free.

            • @joeiwu: I think the days of people with 5+ Amex cards is dying out now that most of the Big Four (Westpac excepted) will have dropped their Amex offerings.

This means that for a couple (no older kids or relatives we would trust to give a supp to), you could in one year have a Westpac Amex, Amex provided Amex and then supplementary cards given to each other to get a total of four per person. Of course for some people such as myself, the NEXT year when you have to start paying annual fees, you might end up dropping that Amex card and then you will drop to either just one card or even ZERO as you may not want to pay the Westpac Amex fees.

My wife has some home loans with Westpac so will be keeping her Westpac Amex as default and so I'm going to drop from four cards to one in the next few months.

My situation is: CBA Amex (losing it Nov 2018), Velocity Amex (losing it Feb 2019), Velocity Amex Supp (losing it Feb 2019), Westpac Amex Supp (from Wife so not losing it).

Come next year March or April 2019, I will be eligible to re-apply for the Westpac Amex again for that fee free period (have to wait 12 months) but then again this will only be for 12 months before I drop it again.

Amex issued cards have an 18 month wait cycle so even worse for me when recycling. going to be a rocky next few years trying to maximise these deals for me and the wife.

              • @danielh: Thats true, however we just have a modest number of cards (I have Explorer and AMEX Westpac, wife has Essentials, no annual fee) and it wasn't hard for us to apply for 4 more cards to each primary card holder to make the count 15. For deals like this, you cannot beat having the more cards the merrier. I know that previously some supplementary cards have the same number as the primary card holders, which makes the card pretty much useless.

But all AMEX issued cards (including the Westpac one) has different card numbers.

                • @joeiwu: Are you going to keep those cards after the first year and pay the yearly fee (excluding the fee for life one)?

It is an interesting option to consider though. A fee free Amex issued one might be interesting for me if I'm willing to give up the 12/18 month cycles of applying (getting lots of points) then dropping for 18 months (then rinse and repeat). These deals are worth about $800-$1000 to me every 30 months but is it really worth the pain of not having an Amex when I need one for deals like this?

Hmmmmmm, food for thought for me and the wife when out Amex Velocity cards run out end of Jan 2019.

                  • @danielh: Yep the fee-free one is definitely something to consider. The Explorer I am keeping for good, as its $399 with $400 of travel credit and yields extremely good points comparatively. The AMEX Westpac apparently is only $40 / annum to keep after the first year, so I may keep it too just to save the hassle? The only restriction I would have is that I won't be able to churn AMEX cards; but there are plenty of other deals to churn without touching AMEX side of things. Food for thought indeed :-)

              • @danielh: "no older kids or relatives we would trust to give a supp to"
You keep the card. As long as you can get them to agree to give you an id document if you need to provide it to AMEX. It seems that sometimes they request them and other times not. easternculture states it depends on what card you have. According to everything I have read having a supplementary card in a relatives (or other persons) name does not affect them in any way. The primary is responsible for all bills and that person is not disqualified from getting the sign up bonus if/when they want to get their own card. They can even have one and be supplementary on yours.

                • @Yola: Hmmmm thanks, more food for thought.

I'm now really thinking that the Fee Free Amex cards with Supplementary cards might be the better long term consideration for me.

          • -1

@ujwols: Each Amex card can have 4 supp card holders for free . Amex limits to 2 card per member so you can easily get 10 cards

            • @easternculture: I'm curious how you got 12 cards as you have 2 main cards and 8 supplementary. Therefore it's only 10 altogether. Unless you have 4 mains cards.

      • If you don't mind me asking, what names are you registering to these supplementary cards? Just family members? Or can you have multiple cards in your own name?

Does a supplementary card impact credit ratings? (I don't imagine it would)

        • Family members

          • @easternculture: Ok thanks. So can't have multiple cards in your own name?

            • @DooDah: 2 main cards

Supp has to be in other names.

However you can elect to have them initial and surname on the card

        • +1

Amex asked me to provide ID numbers for the new supplementary card holder so keep that in mind before you start ordering supps for random people.

          • @capslock: They do ID checks against drivers licence, medicare card etc. Yes they have to be real people!!

            • +1

@Peck: Not all cards require ID check 😀

              Depends what card you have

              • @easternculture: Oh. Thats good to know. I shouldn't have extrapolated my Platinum Charge Card experience.
I can see why as it is virtually unlimited spend.

      • +1

        How big is your freezer?

    • Because its the easiest to use by most people…

Whether your saving $50 or $500… there are more people who can participate because its easy

The most common usage being Opal and Myki

My first time on this was $10x10 had 2 cards… a few lunch run around and saved $200

  • All registered. Go for an Opal run perhaps?

  • For the 5 different places rule, can anyone confirm if it's 5 different places for one card or for all supplementary cards as well?

So for shop A, B, C, D , E, would I be able to use it four times at each shop because I have 4 cards (1 main + 3 sup)?

Thanks in advance. Excited to be jumping on board this year

    • +1

Yes, you will be to. It will be no problem at all as the supp cards are counted as separate cards.

    • +7

To add to this, if you want to buy an $80 item and the store doesn't let you split payment across your 4 cards, see if you can buy 4 X $20 store gift cards. Then pay for your $80 item with your GCs. That's how I've been buying half price sneakers at Culture King etc over the past few years

  • For Opal card topups, will it work for any of the opal card retailers or does the store have to participate in the promotion, new to this, thanks

    • Only the participated retailers during promo period.

  • +1

Is anyone able to put a list of the merchants in a spreadsheet or table like in previous years?

    • +5

Yep, I will get capslock to do it. Anything else you need?

  • Cheers OP. Woke up to a notification that my bot already registered for me :D

    • How does the bot work? Does it all some Amex API?

      • Nah, no api. In all honesty I wasn't expecting it to work for shop small as registration is slightly different to regular AmEx offers.

        • "registration is slightly different to regular AmEx offers".

          Is it? How so?

          • @Some Guy: Card number, extra email validation, different part of website etc.

          • +1

@Some Guy: My shop small was in my offer section

            Didn't have to manually register

            • @easternculture: Yep. I just had to click the save to card button - like every other offer that shows up in my offers.

The Amex Connect page (aka "manually register") was the same as every other offer too.

In short I did nothing different in registering for this offer.

I was just interested in the differences that @nurries had mentioned.

  • Is it one use per card per shop ?

    • yes

  • Coles group gift card for petrol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • +1

Which retailer in the shop small promo sells coles group gift cards, please?

      • Just saw on the website itself in the T&Cs it says "Excludes gift card purchases"..I also want to buy gift cards as well but this makes me abit wary

        • +4

Member since 2011, so I can't really use "you must be new here"…

    • Lies!

    • Yea I'd like to know where to get some GC's too, lol

    • smart comment.

  • +7

    stupid CBA

cards use to work not now :(

    • I know.

It's feels like not being invited to a party.

  • +2

Surprised with the early registration. Nevertheless.

ALL CARDS ENROLLED.. (laughs in ferret)

    • It's time to take the ferret for a run!
Feeling sorry too for those people who think it starts 1 Nov. and when they check "Enrollment full".

      • and those who enrolled today, thinking it starts today start their spree….

        • +3

hate it when those guys on the list but when you pay they say "we no longer accept amex cards".

          DIE

      • haha…feeling peckish

  • Anyone here from Tassie that can recommend good eateries that participate in Shop Small? Heading over next week for 8-day holiday, would love to hear from some locals about worthwhile places in both Hobart and Launceston…thanks in advance…

  • +8

Tong Li supermarket is not in the list any more. :(

      • If it was a restaurant, I'd mind, but whenever I buy their products it's packaged or frozen goods.. as long as it's not expired or that they are fined for changing expiry dates, I don't mind.
Bummed they aren't on the list.

        • Not saying that people shouldn't buy there. I just remembered coming across that and other restaurants so I wanted to dump the links.

    • I've always wondered how on earth did they managed to stay qualified/eligible to be a shop small merchant given the size of their chain…

      • There's often a red herring in there. A few years ago Under Armour online purchases got the credit. Looks like 7-11 stores are "it" this year.

        • +1

          Nah check your filtering.

        • 7-Eleven isn't part of Shop Small.

          • @ronnknee: Could have sworn that someone upthread mentioned it was.

            • @Some Guy: Who realised they were wrong and deleted the whole comment chain. Need to stop the false rumours.

              • +1

@ronnknee: Unbeknownst to me when I posted. I shall give myself a jolly good thrashing for not checking back through pages of comments to see if some anonymous poster has removed a falsehood on the internet. Thank god you're here to keep false rumours to the absolute minimum.

          • @ronnknee: I'll have to test this at my local 7-11. Prepaid a year's worth of bus travel during last year's shop small. Was planning to do the same this year. Would be a real shame if 7-11 were no longer partaking.

        • Well, I dont know about previous years, but Hungry jacks certainly is part this year.
I got email from AMEX after I used my card there !

It comes up as BK (Burger King?)

They are a nation-wide chain … how are they small ? Unless the individual franchisee store qualifies as independent business ??!!

    • I bet Tong Li has turned into a big business like Harris Farm now so it is no longer qualified to participate.

  • -5

Can I use this to top up my Opal Card at different Woolworths/Coles?
