"but it cheap, buy it twice"
IE You will need to by the proper versions a second time later when the cheese-metal ones fail you

I think for someone whose most challenging DIY task is putting together Ikea furniture (because that cordless screwdriver thingy won't be good for much else), it's okay. It has all the pieces someone could want for that one time they need it, it'll be used maybe once a year if that, and honestly people can replace bits and pieces with better tools if they need to - and they'll know which tool they need and have somewhere to store it.

Basically it's a toolkit for my mum rather than my dad…

There I was agreeing with your comment, and then you included that last (sexist) para.

        • +6

=( It's not sexist, I'm not generalizing I'm literally talking about my mum and my dad! As in I'd get this for my mum if I couldn't swing around and fix something up for her regularly because small fixes around the house are all she does. I'd get my dad far more robust tools because he likes to do a lot more serious work.

@HighAndDry: Accepted, but it is all in the readers' perception.

@GG57: No, categorically no. (imo) That leads to a purely subjective reality with no solid link to objective facts or even reasonableness and I refuse to take that view.

At most I'd concede to a reasonable person's view, as opposed to a subjective "writer's intentions" approach.

But a reasonable person wouldn't assume I knew my parents so little I was generalising to them. (I wasn't using the indefinite "you"), as in "This is something to get for your mum rather than your dad", I was talking about my parents - who are specific individuals whom a reasonable person should assume I enough familiarity with to not be making generalisations.

And now you got me ranting and looking like a crazy person. At least it's a Friday.

    • In theory yes, but then I've still got a lot of cheap tools that I bought when I was a poor student and still use 20 years later.

I would hope that you can rip out that packaging within the toolbox. Such a lot of wasted space.

  • They are terrible quality tools, not a deal if you have to buy it again.

I would say minimum quality standard even for a one-time-a-year kind of person would be brands like Stanley, and even they aren't great in some areas.
