They went offline a few days ago, caused quite a havoc:

I practically plan my entire next 6-12 months on google calendar, and for the several hours it was offline yesterday…Not.the.best.day -_-
That's the good thing of having it synchronize with something else like a mobile device so you aren't without it.

The title of this should be updated, they are not giving away pro accounts. They are giving away 1 year access to a pro account. After that year you will need to pay for the account.
Crap what am I going to do after a year, my gmail account is ~7GB and the free one only has a 2GB limit. Cross that bridge when I come to it I guess.
If you only want your emails backed up just use an email program with POP to download all of your emails from gmail.
