I was after a workbench for the shed and came across this sale at SCA. Reviews state it is pretty flimsy and not super solid, but will be fine for my home DIY use.

Good timing, been looking at purchasing one of these lately - thanks OP!

Edit: just noticed it's also the same price on their eBay store, so can be combined with 5% voucher.

you could make a much better one with $68 worth of wood and half a days work.

    • Keen to get my hand dirty, any online tutorials?

    • half a days work

It would take a novice much longer than half a day to research tutorials, acquire supplies and then eventually build something like this.

Not to mention the potential extra money spent on tools to actually complete the job.

That would take an amateur about $1000 and longer than a lifetime to build.

Why even bother with wood? Get yourself a welder and weld up a bench 10 times stronger than this.

Everyone, if you are going to be using this bench regularly, I recommend you paint the MDF, or replace the MDF with plywood. I have a bench with an MDF top, and after regular use over a week, I started getting sores on my forearms. Turns out that the binder in MDF is urea formaldehyde, which is a skin irritant. Where my skin touched the wood regularly, I got sores.

It was summer when this happened, being sweaty may have been a factor - maybe it dissolved some of the binder?

I know a lot of chippies who refuse to work with MDF because of potential health impacts.

Very good suggestion about replacing it.

Paint the MDF with 50/50 Aquadhere/water mix, cheap foam rollers work really well, then you can spray it with one of the cheap Australian export cans and it'll be pretty water resistant, and gives an OK finish and durability.

Yep, sealing it is advisable. Wearing a mask whilst cutting it is too.

bunnings sell nice tops you could use for a work bench, build a frame yourself out of pine and you'll be sweet. it'd cost more to buy the drill, screws, wood, etc but more worth it as you could build a custom length bench with everything you want.

6v drill might work but it'll burn out quickly, better off with an 18v drill.

Melamine bench top is the way to go. Easily replaced, cheap from Bunnings, and you can use a whiteboard marker or pencil to do your sums.
