I heard on the radio this morning that Snickers bars are now being imported from China…

      • +3

We need to start having flags on the pricing tags for all food sold, or at the very least, one line saying 'Made in xx'

        • +4

Apparently in the ingredients label on the Snickers bars made in China, it says 'Contains: Stuff'.

A person called 3aw to mention this, and Neil Mitchell got one of the staff to purchase one and confirmed the above…

    Chinese honey

    • +1

I doubt Aldi would slip up like that.

Personally, if it tastes like honey, and is as thick as honey, I don't care what it's made of

      • -2

Pretty sure Aldi has slipped up like that, on a product that is honey as well. Google it.

  • -2

In other news Aldi's fruit and veg is of lesser quality when compared to colesworths

    • +1

Have you proof? @paok11. Sometimes the produce isn't refrigerated due to lack space (mushrooms etc), but they deal with the same suppliers as Coles and Woolies - Perfection Fresh, Moraitis for example. I'm not sure if your comment is 100% true.

      • +2

They grow different trees for different supermarkets

        • Aldi broccoli goes bad very quickly. Not sure why. I haven't had problems with other produce.

        • Confirm this, they harvest their organic Spaghetti range from Spaghetti trees in the Gouldburn Valley.

    • +4

      Not true.

Sometimes Aldi's fruit is a ton better than Woolies.

Reality is Wollies fruit/veges are pretty terrible, and its not hard to be better

      • -2

Fake news right there. Aldi fruit and veg is regularly of lesser quality than anywhere else. Especially their watermelons, if they dared to open one on display it’ll look pale and white. But alas, easier to sell it unopened and quality unknown.

        • +7

Return the watermelon within 60 days.

    • their selection is smaller but i often find their produce nicer/fresher/bigger

It's BS honey from China…. not even worth $2, AVOID
You're better off eating maple syrup.

FYI - China sends us rubbish honey laden with additives
yet purchases entire Aussie/NZ Honey Companies that make pure honey:

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-manuka-health-m-a/two-chi…

The problem is that people want cheap honey, so Aldi stocks it as it markets to these people that dont understand Honey if it became an entity and slapped them on their face.
If they spent 5mins understanding the process and cost to make 1 Tablespoon of honey (from flower to table), they would spent $50 for 500g.

    • +4

I don't know about any of that (whether is Chinese or not), but I can confirm that Panda honey is garbage and I'd never buy it again.

I'm very familiar with how Honey is produced and eat a ton of it, and I think that many more bespoke producers still make a profit at 10-12$ a KG.

        I don't think so.

At a VERY high level, honey is sub-classified as such, the lowest level is the best (as it includes all above)

        • Pure Australian Honey
          • Organic
            • Raw (sometimes AKA; Unrefined/Unprocessed)
              • Cold Extract.

There is NO WAY ON EARTH you can achieve this quality @ $10/kg.
If you find these descriptions on a honey @ $10kg, you might as well dance naked down the street till the sun rises
Your $10-12/kg is sitting on Level 1 in my list.

At the moment, the closest honey to these that's available as a widely distributed is:
        Byron Bay Honey
        Beechworth

When you stop buying shit syrup (honey) Coles/Aldis/Wools will stop buying it from these dodgy idiots

Thanks for this, seemed too good to be true

Genuinely interested here. The website claims "Premium Quality Honey from Australian Beekeepers" and the packaging says "100% Australian Honey". Are you saying that's a false claim? If so, what evidence do you have to back that statement up?

Someone in your previous post that you've linked to questioned your logic that 100% Australian honey could be 60% Chinese and 40% Australian. You didn't respond to that statement other than to say that it was "an example". An example of what, exactly?

If you have evidence that the honey isn't 100% Australian, perhaps you should submit a complaint to the ACCC for false advertising?

      • +1

I guess frostman must be deep in research, pulling out all that deeply buried evidence that he/she has access to considering he/she hasn't replied yet?

Alternatively we can probably expect him/her to pop up with another exasperated post about people ignoring such self-evident truths in the next honey-related bargain.

        • He/she is probably picketing his local Harris Farm Markets to warn customers that the honey being sold there cannot possibly be 100% Australian, because it's too cheap and there are multiple Chinese restaurants in Mudgee.

Or maybe it's just that you have consistently failed to provide evidence for your claims. Your comments on the earlier thread are pure supposition: it is clear that that you hadn't even looked at the packaging. The Reuters article you have linked to now is irrelevant. The fact that Chinese firms are investing in New Zealand honey makers does not in any way demonstrate that Panda Honey's products are diluted with imported honey.

Based on a quick Google search about Panda Honey, the only people making assertions about Panda Honey's products being diluted with Chinese honey are (1) commenters on OzBargain, using such powerful evidence as the fact that it is called "Panda Honey" and (2) a couple of people making unsubstantiated (and xenophobic) comments on a business review website.

Your assertions amount to a claim that a company has lied on the face of its packaging, and thereby breached Australian consumer protection laws. That is a large and serious claim. I am not inclined to accept claims of that nature and magnitude without evidence.

    • +1

Hey Frostman. Not sure what you mean by "done to death". You link to your previous post which states the product is from China. That was quickly refuted because the label states that the honey is 100% Australian Honey. Are you saying that that Panda Honey is lying? What evidence do you have that this is the case?

    • It's make no sense to import Honey from China, where honey is a lot more expensive there.

Would you import coal from China?

Stick to Australian made/owned honey distrubutoers that have not been bought out by Asian companies…
      e.g Beechworth

      • Is Mudgee Honey real Aussie honey?

        • No they've been bought out and are now called Mi Gee Honey.

  • How on earth honey costs this little.

  • -2

    It’s not real honey.

    • It's honest question really. If you know the process of collecting honey ie. From bees, you know this is not really a mass produced stuff so how can they make so much honey and sell at such cheap price

  • Everyone, how's your experience with the spices of this brand? I once bought the chili flakes. They were totally tasteless and no spice to them.

They relate to honey which is a blend of Australian and Imported ingredients. No suggestion that 100% Australian Honey has an ist

    • +2

Yes, we know that there have been concerns raised about blended Australian/imported honey, and today's stories add to those concerns.

However, those stories say nothing about 100% local honey. And nobody has provided any evidence that Panda Honey's products are anything other than 100% local honey. The Aldi honey that was tested here was the Bramwells line (which is labelled as being a mix of Australian and imported honey), not the Panda Honey line (which is labelled as being 100% Australian).

Accordingly, the stories are irrelevant to the product being advertised here.
