is bonsai easy to take care of ?

    • +50

      Much easier than kids.

        Kids? :O

        • +9

Don't judge until you've looked after some!!!

        • +5

          Not my own…

        • +2

It's hard to kill them. They're much hardier than I'd like to give them credit for.

        • @Munki:

          Kids?

    • +12

      in my experience

buying a bonsai tree from Bunnings isn't the best approach
I religiously took care of it and it died within 2 months

I went back to Bunnings and they refunded me with no questions asked

It seems their supply of Bonsai isn't best suited for Australian climate

    • +6

Depends on species of plant. Just make sure you water it twice a day (as there isn't much soil to soak and retain the moisture).. don't over soak it though. Replace soil when it thins out and give it a mix of sun and shade. Trim where necessary and you can use wires to control the growth pattern. Be sure to moderately fertilise it according to the size. Decorate it with painted clay figures and buildings.. add moss to simulate grass and help with moisture.

Sigh.. This use to be a hobby between my dad and I. Except I don't have his patience or time to garden. Dad's given all of his super expensive and old (30-40 yr) plants away. $99 for this is pretty expensive.

    • +1

Make sure to check for aphids every day. My first bonsai died from them.

      • +7

They're not easy. Ozbargainers have the same social sense as redditors

Well there is a blast from the past. Welcome back Broden.

    Any proof of the deal?
Where in the country was this spotted?

  • +15

Ah. Only root karate come from Miyagi. Just like bonsai choose own way grow because root strong you choose own way do karate same reason.

  • +13

Is it just me or is there something vaguely absurd about the mass production and selling of something as zen as a Bonsai tree?

    • +9

The word 'Zen' is the Japanese attempt at pronouncing the Chinese word 'Chan', which in turn is the Chinese attempt at pronouncing the Sanskrit word 'Dhyana', which translates as 'meditation/concentration'.

      • -3

        Zen is an english word

      • +2

Following on from the above, the name 'Jan' is the Aussie attempt to pronounce the Japanese work 'Zen', which is why at the end of the famous 'Yellow Pages' ad, the woman exclaims she has 'not…happy…jan' as can be heard here

      • +3

And Bonsai may be a Japanese word trying to prounce the original Chinese word 'Penzai', meaning a plant in a pot?
        Not sure

        • +2

Yes, you are correct. In fact, when Chinese/Japanese put them in writing, they are the same Chinese words: 盆栽
Just like Gyoza(Japanese ) vs. Jiaozi(Chinese). Same word in writing: 餃子

  • Would like to pick up one tonight, will call around to confirm however can anyone confirm they’ve been able to purchase one for $99?
    Cheers

    Dead link!

Fyi to the sandgropers here there is a cool bonsai tree shop in Wanneroo markets WA that start sub $100 including a ceramic base (I don't have afiliation with them) but thought I'd comment as never realised the shop existed until last week!

    • This warrants a down vote? Do they sell this bonsai?

    • I would like to renege your unwarranted neg

    • +5

      I don't get the down vote count…
Are people offended by the word sandgropers?

      • Same… I don't think $100 for a bonsai is a bargain but oh well..

      • It's because they did a negative vote on the deal.
        (It has been revoked now)

        • I dont get it. They did a negative vote on the OP deal or this deal? And how did it get revoked?

  • +9

Good deal vs the $249 price of some others but these aren't really "bonsai". You're better off getting a few introductory books, going to an actual bonsai nursery, and getting a few trees to train and work on rather than these shrub-in-a-pot style bonsai.

  • +2

I hear you will get more bush with a 12" version.

  • Tempting!

Any one has hands-on with how to take care? like what tool? how much water and what fertilizer?

  • -6

Looks like pricehipster picked up a price that was then removed from bunnings site before the deal was posted here.

  • For some reason I read it as 12 ft bonsai. Was ready to jump in the car.

    • +2

Rich guy in a convertable right here..

    • +15

Wouldn't that just be a tree then?

      • +7

        Shhhh don't tell him!

  • +6

Looks like a very overpriced common Adenium Desert Rose to me. These are very cheap at Weekend Markets ( Rocklea in Brisbane of example). Put "Bonsai" in front of a plant and price skyrockets. Hundreds of plants can be bonsaid. For $99 you could have much more fun with some market ( or Gumtree/ebay ) plants and pots. A couple of You Tube videos and Asahi beers and you will be Mr. Miyagi, WU007 san.

    • +2

Have to agree, Bunnings is the worst place you can go for Bonsais. Very overpriced and most wouldn't even be classed as a Bonsai. This is not the place for any Bonsai enthusiast to buy a Bonsai. These are like $10 at your local bonsai show/exhibition. hell you can get a better bargain on these (pot belly Fig) on ebay - https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=p…

    • +3

Teach me! I've got Asahi, and a tree - what's next? I'm guessing steroids to shrink the trunk?

  • +7

i find the term 'bonsai' offensive and unnecessary stereotyping. i prefer to refer to them as 'vertically challenged trees'. and if they want to change their gender they should be able to do some without fear of being discriminated against.

    • -7

      It's 2018…

      So shut the (profanity) up

      • +5

some people have no sense of humour.

        • -2

Naughty boy borat, trawling for PC fanboys is waaaaayy too easy……..nice haul by the way.

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo: ozb is clearly divided on this one!

    • Exactly this. They're often bullied too, resulting in a complete lack of representation of their kind in both major political parties as they don't feel welcome.

  • +1

May pay to check your local ALDI, they had similar sized Bonsai for ~$25 in their weekly specials not long ago.

    • +3

That was a short while ago. They've all grown up now 😊

      • +2

Just found the catalogue, turns out the ALDI ones were artificial!
(I would still manage to kill one)

        • +4

Takes artificial bonsai out of temperature & light controlled room

        • +1

@Snoopy113: Better stop pruning it too.

  • Putting a plant that could potentially become a tree into a pot, a bonsai it is not.

This is a potted plant for $99.

    • +2

      Is that a Haiku?
      I counted the syllables
      I guess this is, though

      • I guess it could have been. Wasted shot.

  • Just grow your own bonsai from scratch way cheaper.

  • sad, conspicuous fails

    WW2 banzai charge

    Bunning's bonsai charge

    • +2

I think your syllable counts are off.

      • +1

        The Haiku form
        has gone the way
        of William Wallace

        https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/sep/01/british-scho…

        • +1

          Rest in peace dear five,
          Farewell also friend seven,
          Once more, good bye five.

        • its a good haiku though

      • +1

In Japanese, syllables that use two characters (such as a hard t) count as two syllables in a haiku

        For example

        雪とけて
        村いっぱいの
        子どもかな

        yuki tokete
        mura ippai no
        kodomo kana

(snow falls/and the village is full/of children)

In this instance, the hard p sound っぱ is two characters, and counts as two syllables.

  • Link doesn't work.

Tho I did search and find a $6 bonsai lol
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/50mm-bonsai-starter-punnet_p3677…

    • Seems to have been removed

  • Went to Bunnings, they didn't have any bonsai trees. None of their stores had any and they couldn't confirm the price.
They can be bought through a special order, so I'm getting them to check with the supplier what's available.

    • I’ve definitely seen bonsai at bunnings

  • $99 for an indoor plant..not exactly in the ozb budget book

  • Will this bring me inner peace and tranquility?

  • way too expensive for a beginner to try their luck on.
you've got to get their soil, sunlight, water etc just right for each type of tree or they will die pretty easily.

    • Actually the buddha fig bonsai is very easy to look after. a great bonsai for a beginner.

  • ripped off, you can buy them for $20 when Aldi have them

    • See comments above. The Aldi ones are artificial.

      • i've bought an Aldi bonsai (jan 2017 i think it was) definitely real.

      • Not always, I bought a few Bonsai from Aldi before and it all real deal

  • +1

Why do we still use inches like Americans?

    • +1

True - they should just say it's one dick tall.

      • Why you lying to yourself? Folded though right?

      • *one pornstar dick tall

  • Coles got some bonsai for ~$25. Not sure the type thought but looks similar

  • My IKEA bonsai is doing extremely well

  • The synthetic onse Aldi's selling at the moment would probably much hardier and cheaper.
I've been given bonsai's as gifts on a number of occasions and none have lasted more then a year - probably poor location and maintenance
