        • @Clear: Fair enough

Then I guess this a good deal for now. Thanks Clear

        • @Clear: You clearly cleared it up very clearly, Clear. Thanks for clearing it up.

    • +6

unless you want to buy directly from India my friend :). you know how expensive it is for European to buy their phones outright :). anyway, around $300 USD in India, $345 USD in Vietnam so far so $370 USD for Australia is not bad at all

  • two things you need to concern before buying this: the body is plastic (not slippery though), and the stereo speakers not so good coz top one used as earphone as well so you can hear the bottom speaker always louder than the top one.

    • +1

So I should get what phone with same specs and price? Also most phones do this for stereo sound you know that right? -even$1500+ phones do this

  • +11

    notch = no buy

    • +5

You got negged for having an opinion. Made me laugh

  • Thanks for the details. Looks like great value.
Is this aimed at people who play more games on phone/ watch videos etc.?
TBH not sure why phones need such high specs!

I still have my Redmi Note 3 Prime (band 28 edition) which I bought now about 18 months ago and is going strong.
There are times when I wish I had NFC but not essential.

    • +3

Yes that's correct. The Pocophone is all about performance and would be good for games like PUBG :)

      • Pokemon Go? oh wait no band 28 =(

        • +1

I played Poke Go for ages with half the required 4G bands in areas considered regional. You'll be fine.

        • @Clear:
hmmm interested. however worried that i'll be going overseas on the ~20 september.
what happens inf the phone doesn't arrive by then =/

  • Great price. Personally waiting for camera reviews and Lineage OS, but happy to see it's near 500. Might even be closer to 400 in a few months time when I will be looking at phones!

Gonna stay with my broken 6S and Redmi Note 5 for the time being!

    • +1

Wait until you see my screen cracked Nexus. I really should be upgrading to this Poco.

      • +1

Haha, I once broke my Nexus 4 screen, fell on the kitchen floor.. oh man I was frozen still in shock and horror :(. But yeah man, you should grab one of these!

But I don't really understand what Xiaomi are doing here, don't have a Mi8 with identical specs? Wouldn't this take sales away from that?

        • +2

My 5 survived drops on concrete from moving vehicles. The 5X however was less fortunate from several small drops.

The Poco is intended for the Indian market. Currently Xiaomi India are dominating the market with their budget Redmi series but the more higher end premium range is being dominated by OnePlus who are even beating Samsung and Apple. The Poco is Xiaomi's answer to the OnePlus. Similar hardware, same high performance and all the for the fraction of cost.

Part of the reason why it's under a different brand. It's separate from the Redmi and Mi series of phones. Like how the Xiaomi Blackshark is it's own category and intended for high performance gaming.

        • @Clear: Oh wow I never thought of it like that, I understand now. Thank you. Yeah I've heard about them doing really well in India. That's great for us, because it spills into the rest of the world. Man Xiaomi really are the dream Android fans have been waiting for. I hope they continue to build awesome phones for every category.

Oh wow the 5 really must have been something, I remember when it came out, that white back and black front was a dream! Too bad they messed up the 5X. Google really need to reevaluate what they are doing, the new Pixels will be 1200+. Insane when you have 500 dollar phones like this around!

        • @Zylam Marex: Xiaomi have come a long way since the beginning. Especially since they're really dev friendly now.

I got the 5X extra cheap from HK two years ago. I can't believe how light it is compared to the 5. Unfortunately the battery life is absolutely crap, won't fast charge while the screen is on and is starting to become really sluggish. The screen size is still perfect.

  • +2

Horrid camera system. This is a step back from what was used on the Mi6.

  • +1

Same price as Mi8 6gb/64gb variant. Haven't really looked at this phone whatsoever, but seems like a mediocre device.

    • Has a headphone jack and micro sd plus bigger battery though. I just dropped my Galaxy S7 so deciding between this or a Xiaomi 6x which i can get a relative to buy for $280 in China then wait for next years flagships.

      • +1

The camera on the Mi8 makes up for it all. This 5Mpix zoom is utterly crap. I'd definitely pay the 50 bucks more for the Mi8 over this.
Sorry @Clear - This device should be at least $100 less than this price to be excited about.

        • Thanks for the feedback :)

  • +3

OP, please post again when there is a Global version with support for NFC and Band 28. I want my phone to last 5+ years.

    • Maybe put some more money in it then lol

    • This phone isn't for you then. Your battery will be seriously degraded after 5 years too.

  • +3

You can get an s8 for another 130 dollars… specs looks similar, but really, the screen is the major thing for most people. And Samsung seem to make the best available.

    • +1

S8 is a generation behind and only has 4gb of ram.

      • Generation behind doesn't really mean too much depending on implementation. This gen of Xiaomi has known overheating problems which throttle the CPU back to the same levels as the SD835 in performance. This being a cheaper phone will no doubt have the same issues.

Not to mention the S8 having a much better camera, more capabilities in general (NFC, B28, DEX etc). The Xiaomi will NEVER use past 4GB of RAM even if you hammer it hard. So it really is a marketing ploy about the RAM factor.

  • +1

    A notch and a chin.

    Otherwise good specs, FHD+ notwithstanding.

    • What is "chin"? lol
A shame about the notch and aspect ratio, but great price for a SD845, and it's got a headphone jack :)

      • Chin is the bottom of the phone's bezel is abnormally large to accommodate other items required, have a look at the sharp crystal 2.

        • Thanks for explaining.

That phone looks kind of nice, but selfie cam at the bottom will make me look fat.

        • @idonotknowwhy: The placement of the selfie camera isn't going to change that.

        • @KLoNe: Yeah it is. Selfie cam on the chin of the phone shows my double-chin! Selfie-cam on the top hides my chin.

      • It's very good value.

I have no idea about the OS though.

I've owned a couple of Xiaomi in the past and I didn't like MIUI. You can't add widgets, and there's no app draw. It works like an iPhone.

Hopefully you can permanently hide the notch but probably not.

        • It uses PocoLauncher, not MIUI launcher.

        • @KLoNe: Is it like a standard Android launcher then, with widget support and an app draw? If so, that's good then. But I thought the Chinese weren't into that style of launcher.

        • @lostn: Just Xiaomi for the most part. Poco is designed for the Indian market where app draw is important.

        • @Clear: My Teclast and Chuwi tablets launchers were exactly the same style as Xiaomi's. I just assumed it was a Chinese thing.

        • @lostn: For a while they all tried to copy MIUI but they seem to have gone past that now.

  • +1

Asus zenfone 5, under $500, nfc, 28, facial recognition, big screen. Best value phone out there…

    • +3

Great support track record, great update record… Great software….Oh wait….

      • Wait… Does it actually have a good support and updates, but just bad software?

I was looking into getting one for my wife that hates her Mi A1.

        • Haha no it doesn't ;-) That's why it's so cheap.

        • @OnlinePred: They look good on paper. I remember the first Zenfones were terrible. I hoped a few years in they had improved. Might stick to Xiaomi again then. For their price, they're still best bang for buck.

        • @flaminglemon: Yea OnePlus and Xiaomi are killing it. I would pick up an op6 over most points these days including my pixel 2xl

        • @flaminglemon: yeah I had the original zenfone, this one is a different ball game, I've also had xiaomi, been with oneplus and owner every iteration, new Asus is far better zenui is cleaned up no more annoying apps… Clutter… Best phone I've owned

        • @Retchey: So you owned Op6? Pixels? MI8?

        • @Retchey: Which Zenfone is the one you like?

        • Why doesn't she buy a phone if she hates the one she has?

        • @flaminglemon: zenfone 5.

        • @OnlinePred: who said I owned any of those? Been with oneplus since the one, last op device was the 5t, and the Asus shits all over it, have you owned the zenfone 5?

        • @Retchey: Wait, serious question, you really think the asus is better than the oneplus 5T? In what way? Im in the market, but xiaomis dont do it for me. Been really liking the Nokia's though.

Anything above snapdragon 636 or 835 is fine for me. Specs dont mean all that much. saw some vids of xioami playing games where they said gaming was great but the video showed it side by side with a nokia 6.1 + and the xiaomi had noticeable stutter whereas the 'slower' nokia was smooth.

        • @KLoNe:She is now. Getting the Oppo R11s. Getting it from JB because she wants local warranty.

      • Great support track record, great update record… Great software….Oh wait….

everyone has to start out somewhere.

However, for the same price, the specs don't match the Xiaomi. It's battery is smaller, and SoC is a SD636.

        • 636 is plenty enough, never had one bit of lag, AI charging, battery life 7+ hours sot, have had xiaomi, Asus is far better imo

        • @Retchey: As long as you don't want to do something like gaming etc it's fine. It's a good mid range cpu.

        • +1

          @Retchey:

          636 is plenty enough

Plenty enough, but if the same price can get you an 845 with a battery 700mah bigger, I'm getting that instead.

        • +1

@lostn:no NFC or 28 I feel sick…. Xiaomi need to pull their heads in

        • @OnlinePred: 636 is designed for AI, and this phone is full of it.

        • @Retchey: designed for ai? Ai what? Most of AI anything is better done in the cloud lol, not a mobile chip…..

        • @OnlinePred: do you post anything other than?????? Lol, try charging a battery with AI in the cloud??????

        • +1

          @Retchey: what?

        • @OnlinePred: awesome ha hahahaha

      • Have had an update every three weeks, worldwide Warranty on asus products, software is way improved over older zenfones.

  • +1

Chinese phones are now making awesome hardware for a great price, but their android support is lacking at the moment.

Hopefully One plus continues to break that barrier and provide longer support, especially with project treble getting better.

As long as these companies stops using skins.

    • Shipping with Android 8.1 is ahead of a lot of the competition and 9 isn't far off. MIUI Poco is far closer to stock than MIUI, but how many phones offer a true stock experience these days? Pixel, Samsung and OnePlus certainly don't.

      • Its not just about the shipping version, many of the chinese brands don't even support the major updates after launch, good to hear that 9 is coming soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if it never did.

        • Other brands yes but not Xiaomi. In recent years they've had a good track record of updating their phones.

They even have Android One and Project Treble with some phones.

        • @Clear: Apparently MIUI 10 on the Redmi Note 3 will come with Oreo. Those are rumours. I'll believe it when I see it. But as of now, I'm still on Marshmallow, with May 2018 security updates.

I don't know what it's like for other phones as old as this, but I would have liked to at least have the latest security updates. Don't mind not having Nougat or Oreo.

        • @flaminglemon: Considering that the RN3 was launched over 2 years ago that's not bad considering Android update cycles. Significantly better than other brands who never release a single update.

        • @Clear: And let's not forget roms. I'm was going to flash mine with Lineage, but I might wait to see if MIUI 10 actually does have Oreo.

      • the android one phones, eg Xiaomi A1, some Motos, and most Nokias are android One so stock android.

Clean version of android, and if treble complaint which phones released with oreo (not nougat with Oreo update) are then updates come from Google.

Can't see myself buying another phone that isn't Android One.

        • We're not talking midrange here.

    • Need to go android one and treble to break the crappy china update cycle.

      • Treble would still rely on manufacturers rolling out updates themselves. Android One ensures you get updates, but when that happens is another thing. The Mi A1 only got Oreo a couple of months back.

  • Need to be cheaper

  • +1

    Geekbuying. No thanks

  • Has there been an order from Xi Jinping- no more phones for Taiwan? When is Xiaomi going to make a suitable replacement for the Redmi Kate, with B28 and NFC?

  • Not bad specs for price, pretty much the same specs as my s9+, there a few comparisons though

    No wireless charging support
    Not waterproof/ip68
    No nfc
    No band 28
    1080p screen, not QHD amoled
Not australian stock, hence no warranty or support
Quality may not be on par with samsung

Otherwise looks like a good value phone for those who dont use or need the above

    • +2

You can get all of those features in the S9+ for $488 more outright ;)

      • Yeah I know :), but good to let others know what other options they have, abiet at double the price

  • +1

You can get it cheaper here:
    https://www.sunsky-online.com/product/default!view.do?subjec…

Have used Sunsky in the past and they're alright.

  • 2 Q's

    1. Is this a genuine Global version and not just a dodgy "Global Rom" variant?

    2. No option for the Aramid finish ?

  • no band 28 and no NFC really kills this deal. if xiaomi can make an AU version with both features and have it hit the market for $599 they'd be on a total winner - i reckon some MVNOs would be happy to couple it with some cheap plans, too.

  • what means Poco

    • +1

They are taking the piss against OPPO. OPPO brought out a phone called the Realme 1, going against the Xiaomi Redmi

  • +1

    Top Notch phone

  • +2

So this a preorder atm. Wait for Aliexpress to come onboard shortly for a cheaper price.

  • +2

Just 2 days and price drop by almost AUD 20 already…..
