;(…i just bought a Samsung ML2525 for $56 shipped from OFFICEMAX, with my research, brother 2140/2 is better than else, as it come with regular 1500 pages toner (ML2525 with 1000 pages, ML1660/5 with 700 pages) and have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPCGZZIdXyM, sorry about my poooor english…

    • And brother is much more solid built. Samsung is just cheap plastic.

  • Does this have a combined toner/drum? If not, how long should the drum last for?

  • Does it have back to back printing?

    • title says mono doesnt it?

      • +1

umm mono means black and white, i think he is referring to duplex which means both sides of the paper

i would say no it doesnt do duplex ie back to back

        • Thanks. Didn't know that.

      • +2

back to back, not back in black

        • +4

So how is this printer powered…AC/DC? I just wanna know coz I don't wanna be thunder…THUNDERSTRUCK! :p

    • manual duplex

  • +2

buying a new printer to replace my existing brother-2140 is cheaper than replacing the toner!!! :P

    • +3

Make sure you do this, as ericookie highlighted, to ensure you are really out of toner before replacing as it's even cheaper ;-)

      • THANK YOU

      • +1

Love the bit in the clip 'Don't ever buy a Macaw, they're really loud' ROFL! Oh and I can't believe the premature toner indication. Easy hack around though, so all good.

    • +5

Ludicrous comment. Show some maturity and comment only on the deal at hand.

    • +1

then don't buy the paper then…. just because they stock, does not mean you have to buy it…

    • Do you want to also buycott the other reflex resellers aswell? dont kill the messenger get to the source

  • +3

I ONLY buy Reflex paper !!!

    • Same here!

      • PS. I lied, I don't buy Reflex, i'm a uni student…. I buy the cheap stuff.

    • +1

      why's that?
what's wrong with the other brands?

      serious q btw

      • +1

most of the other brands work fine for me(except for some really shit quality ones), but Reflex is certainly slightly thicker and better quality imo.

      • +3

        why’s that?

        to annoy clement.c :P

        • +1

          oh haha lol
i didn't read his comment above

    • +1

      Ditto.

  • +2

I think the title should be fixed to say nation wide and not store wide

In my view, this is probably better, 35 bucks extra for network capability is pretty good.

    • Does this mean that u plug it into your router and off u go?

      • In most cases you still need to install drivers on the machines, but its just the added convenience of not going via a pc.

  • I'd like the option of a duplexor in the HL-5340D.

    https://www.pcdiy.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=308&products…

I wonder if OW will price match + 5% ?

    • I doubt the duplexor is worth an extra $130

      • Is it possible to add a duplexor onto this bad boy?

        • +5

You could be a human duplexor. Takes time but cheap. :)

  • Just wondering what's the cheapest colour laser printer out there?

    • I'm looking for cheap colour laser printer too…

  • +1

Get rid of the old models so the new one can finally come to Australia. "HL2270DW: Wireless Monochrome Printer"

  • Great printer, great price.

  • You can't be serious, I just bought one of these from Officeworks on Saturday for $89…

Needed a new drum (i thought) for my HL-2140 (which is the exact same printer except the colour of it), and as 'HD' pointed out its cheaper to buy a whole new printer than the drum on its own. Ended up being the toner that needed replacing, so at least now I have a spare drum and a spare printer.

These are great printers btw, I've had my HL-2140 for a couple years now and I'm pretty sure the drum and toners last a lot longer than what they state.

I don't know how they can justify $207 for the drum on it's own. The printer comes with a drum and a full toner and is less than 1/3 of the price, it's just ridiculous.

Does anyone know what Officeworks policy is on getting a 'price match' after you've bought it? Wouldn't mind getting ~$25 refunded from the $89 I paid.

    • -1

why dont u just return it and claim that it's faulty internal and won't print properly and ask then to get you a refund instead of a replacement. then come back later on or to a different store and repurchase it for the lower price. try it :)

      • +5

Or buy a new sealed box and return it on the old receipt.

    • cheaperish laser printers dont come with a full capacity toner. especially for these VERY cheap printers. they only fill about 10%, they only say these UPTO XXXX pages. its just another marketing way to sell. otherwise people wont buy laser as its more for people printing 1000's of pages.

even when spending money on better laser, they generally come with a half toner, ie 50% full. but at the same time you get better functions.

full toners last upto 20 000 pages.
i think this is why people are mistaken for what they get.

read my post below if you want long 20 000 pages per toner.

      • No doubt some brands do this but I'd have to disagree on this particular printer. The estimated pages for a full 2130 toner is 1,500, I'm pretty sure we got at least 2,500 out of the toner that came with the printer first time round so I'd have to say it is a full toner, not a starter. This was regular printing of assignments etc. so it wasn't from low page coverage. I'm pretty sure they estimate that on like 5% page coverage too which is pretty low.

Back when I bought my original printer I got it on sale at Tandy for ~$65 as they were clearing them out for some reason, but most other places had them for ~$150. From what I have seen, at least in W.A., they were at that price for ages and have only come down to prices like $89 and now on sale for this price in the last few months or so. So taking into account that if the printer was ~$150, the genuine toners are ~$60 so it would make sense that it is a full toner, disregarding the ridiculous price of a replacement drum.

I remember I had looked at replacement drums before and they were no where near $200 so I don't know why they are at that kinda price.

As for 20,000 pages out of 1 toner, I think you mean the drum right?

  • no duplex but still a good deal

  • +1

does anyone have paper jam issue with this printer ? i bought it half a year ago, the first 2,3 months it was smooth and all but after that almost every time i print, the paper keep jamming and it's so annoying

    • whoops wrong button, i have the same printer and found out is the type of paper you use.
if the paper is too thin, the paper is easily jammed in the printer. at the start i used the cheapest paper i could find as i was printing heavy. which i then found when printing, paper curls and wont stack, then causes a mess when the paper comes out from printing as the paper is all curled from heat. i'd have to manually bend the paper the opposite way.

now ive only used reflex paper.

  • How many pages does this last for on the toner that comes with the printer? At least 1000?

    • +1

      upto 1500 pages @ 5% coverage.

  • Keep in mind that this is a GDI printer, which means that the printer is essentially "dumb", and the driver does all the work (same concept as the 56k winmodem). With GDI printers your PC's CPU, rather than the printer, performs all the processing for print jobs. Having said that, this is usually not a problem with the power of today's PCs.
(Note, this is not unusual. Pretty much all cheaper laser printers are GDI printers).

    • yea u basically pay for what you get

    • Wow, talk about a blast from the past…GDI lasers haven't been a problem in about 15 years to my knowledge! :o

For those weird occasions the driver can't handle a job, there's always Ghostscript! ;)

    for those that print heavy
refill are a no no, ive tried this for cheap $25-$30, but rollers do wear out.

for those who are interested to print heavy, get yourself a
Brother DR-2125 (Genuine) Drum Unit Up to 20,000 pages
    its $167.98

heres a brief list of what other printers that may be -
    Compatible Printers:
    DCP-7040 HL-2140 HL-2142 HL-2150N HL-2170W MFC-7340 MFC-7440 MFC-7840W

if you do your maths and wish to use it for long term this drum is definetely valued for money.

its definetely better than buy 3 new printers to get 3x (1500pages) for ie $180 and the amount of pages ive done, about 13-14000pages in 6 months 1x heavy duty toner 1x printer and still going strong.

i would probably be more inclined to change to a network type now though.

its a shame how manufacturers are making printers cheaper to replace rather than selling the cartridges or toners cheaper price. all this plastic thrown out in a matter of months. its a pity for our environment.
lucky enough for the brother i found a better replacement way rather than buying a new printer each time.

so i hope that help you guys =D
