  • Went to the SE page on eBay - they have some good prices on 2 and 4 bay NASs. Eg QNAP TS-231P $196.00 after 22% off and 20% off with code PHASER

Finally pulled the trigger on this.
Now looking to buy 2 more Seagate Ironwolf 8TB to fill all the holes.

    • +2

Try to buy from two different batches…

      • Smort

      • Just got my Ironwolf 4TB RMA'd … running at degraded mode now…

  • What should I do with my many 1 and 2 tb drives… Obviously putting them all in this would be a waste…

    • build your own cheap unRaid server and combine all the HDD's you want. I have 12 HDD's of all sizes and shapes.

      • What build would you recommend for an unRaid server?

        • 1x1tb
          2x2tb
          3x3tb
          4x4tb

          then have a party

@Budju: Ah, sorry, I meant specs for the server itself.

I currently have 4x8tb 1x4tb and 1x2tb with plans to increase size but obviously can't use my PC for those forever, the electricity usage is a bit high, but I also want to run certain things such as Ubooquity and Plex (transcoding should be unnecessary) 24/7.

        • mmm any Intel CPU x64 and minimum 4Gb ram.

Other than that, make sure the PSU is good enough for the amount of HDD's.

Example of a cheap but good build: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/dFtTP3

This is an example of a low powered unRaid. It will hold 6x HDD's out of the box and you can have another 6 at least with a PCI card. The PSU can hold around 16 HDD's. Power consumption should be around 20 watts idle.

@zapy: Awesome, thanks, that helps a lot!

Did you put together the parts list yourself? Just wondering if will work as is (other than obvious changes like add a CPU fan and get thermal paste), and any potential issues.

        • @zapy:

Excuse the noob question, and I will read the FAQ for myself, but is unraid something I do with a windows OS, or is is a separate comment prompt style OS that I will have to learn to navigate?

        • @ozbjunkie: unRaid is a linux server.

I must say that you absolutely don't need to know linux to know how to operate or install. My wife was able to run and setup the unRaid and she can't even play a video on tv through DLNA.

I suggest download unRaid on USB and run it on your computer (it does not install locally, ever). See how you go.

@BradleyDS2: made the parts list myself for my home NAS. However, this is my current setup: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/G6JYLJ (doesn't have PSU price) what's changed?

          • motherboard, has 2 lan ports (not that I use them, but seemed better at the time)
          • quieter power supply
          • price - about $100 more
        • @zapy:

          Thanks for the info. Bookmarked!

        • @zapy: any recommendation for cpu cooler? Is cpu bundle cooler is good enough for 24/7? thanks.

        • @solpiry: yes, stock will suffice.

The CPU coolers (even stock ones) are optimized for CPU's to run at around 90% of their maximum performance for prolonged periods of time. Your home NAS will stay idle for most of the day unless you are transcoding movies to friends/family all the time.

  • Fairly expensive still. Would a WD ex4100 for $450 be worth it or is this one that much better to justify the extra cost?

    • Synology and one the better ones. Mines been running for 4 years nonstop apart from the lousy power interruption from Energy Australia

      • And they are always getting updates and new features. Not a bad developer community for plugins too.

      • I have a synology dual bay, it's great. Just wondering if the quad bay Synology would be worth paying an extra 3 hungie for over the WD. Probably yes I suppose.

  • This or a 5+ bay one? Thinking of populating them with 8TBs but is the price difference between the 4 and 5 bay worth the extra storage space?

    • I realised that this unit can get a 5 bay expansion device tacked onto it which is why it's more expensive than the similar looking DS418.
