Might want to add the $200 travel credit you get every year. If used right, it easily offsets the annual fee.

    • Can you pls explain how ?

      • Classifieds

      • +3

Not sure if you meant how you get the travel credit every year or how to offsets the annual fee:

        • The Travel Credit is an annual benefit and not a one-off promotional sign up benefit
        • It offsets the annual fee if you're in a situation where you're booking a flight that happens to be the same price on AMEX travel as everywhere else. The problem is this is not always the case. For example, there are times when a flight might be $50-100 cheaper on a site like Expedia, Aunt Betty. Classifieds does not quite offset the annual fee because you'll most likely sell it at a loss (~25%? i.e. $150 for $200)
        • +1

I normally use the travel credit for hotel stays.

Takes a little effort to compare prices against wotif, hotel.com, etc (fewer choices on amex and quite a few have marked up price) but definitely do-able.

        • @dwinarto: Yep I think the problem I've found with hotels via AMEX travel is it's even more likely to be more expensive than the competition than flights are..

The problem with flights is it doesn't include the budget airlines.

  • -1

Damn, still hoping for something closer to 100k

    • 100k is the typical/baseline bonus on the platinum charge, it would be extremely surprising to see it on the platinum edge.

      • or Explorer.

      • Personally never seen it on the Platinum Edge at all. This 50k is the highest I can recall. Next highest would've been 30k?

      • Was hoping for 100k on the Velocity Plat I guess.

  • -2

The AmEx website no longer states that AmEx Platinum edge earns Ascent Premium points.

    Interesting……..

    • +6

It never did. It was always Ascent only.

    • +1

That is the only mentionable benefit for essential cards.

  • +6

The platinum cards have the best points per $ but this card normally doesnt have the bonus points on sign up which kinda kills the value. But with 50k points it’s equivilent to a 66k point sign up bonus on explorer card.

3 KrisFlyer miles per $1 is a great rate. That’s 1 way business class to Singapore every $20k you spend at supermarkets/supermarket gift cards.

Compare that to explorer which would have to spend about $39k to get the same number of KrisFlyer points!

    • +4

Supermarket specific though, but great nonetheless.

IMO best combo is you have both. That also gives you the added benefit of combining your Explorer & Plat Edge points, so that your Explorer points do effectively earn you 2 KrisFlyer/Asia Miles per dollar.

      • -2

Is that an option? Can you transfer gateway points to ascent if you have the edge?

What happens if you sign up to explorer during the 100k sign up bonuses and then add an edge card after that point? Will those 100k explorer points be ascent?

        • -1

You can't transfer Gateway to Ascent - your points get combined and it only works if you have a card with a "lower level" MR points and another card with a "higher level" MR points.

What happens if you sign up to explorer during the 100k sign up bonuses and then add an edge card after that point? Will those 100k explorer points be ascent?

Yes, but it's not automatic. You need to call to get it done.

    • +1

Correct me if I am wrong, the bonus points is higher as its MR points which is the same as Explorer . Its not Ascent points which is valued higher. Hope this change by AMEX doesnt affect existing cards.

    • +3

      Hey guys,

Just wanted to throw this in there. I applied for this card through the link but also the Explorer through a referral link 10 minutes apart. When the cards arrived, I called Amex and was able to link my Explorer card to the Platinum Edge credit card Ascent program (so everytime I spend on Explorer I get Ascent points not Gateway). Im also eligible to get both 50k (this bonus) and 60k (referral for explorer) bonus points as per the lady I spoke to because when I applied, I didn't technically have an Amex card to begin with. Got additional cards for my wife too so 2x 3k points.

So 116k points all up. Cant believe it actually worked haha

      • will there be a credit check twice in this case ?

I applied for the platinum edge yesterday and keen to have them asap to register for vogue offer.
How did you verify that you were eligible for 50k bonus points. nothing mentioned on the approval email.

        • Not sure about the credit checking, but I assume so? When I called to link the cards, I specifically asked if I was eligible for both and the lady said yes. So far the 50k has been credited to my account, just waiting to meet the minimum spend for the 60k.

        • @ron ron: how long did it take to get the 50,000 points after you spent $750

        • @spk: they said 6-8 weeks but it appeared in 1-2 days. Will wait n see with the Explorer

        • @ron ron: ok thanks mate

        • @spk:

AMEX are really good with the delivering of bonus points. Much better than the domestic banks that make you wait 3 months in some cases.

  • -1

I've never seen the bonus on the edge so high. I wish I didn't already have one or I would jump on it. Buying woolworths egift cards at 5% off at cashrewards or entertainment book gives you triple points per dollar with this card and you can the egift cards to buy perfect gift cards at effectively .6525 per $100 which you can spend where amex is not accepted. This means you will be getting almost 3 points per dollar on much of your spending.

    • you only get triple points per dollar if you swipe the card in the supermarket, do you? online transactions can only get you 1 point per dollar. correct me if wrong.

      • 3 points per $1 when buying egift cards

    • +1

Not all woolworths locations accept egift cards to purchase gift cards in store.
I tried at Mawson Lakes and TTP in SA and the transaction was 'not allowed'

      • Which gift cards were you buying?

    • +1

How are you calculating 0.6525? I'm taking it you're missing the 5 at the front?

This is what I signed up from, same points from 3 months back.
Seemingly people in the comments were not interested in it back then…

    Bummer.

    • +3

This deal effectively excludes about 95% of ozbargainers :(

      • Does DJ Amex card count? I was under impression that card is usually not counted.

        • it's a card product issued by american express.

      • Well I'm in the 5% category then! I've had many credit cards in the last couple of years but I've never had an Amex directly.

But, I'm in the market for one!

This looks good, but the Qantas Ultimate card is better, if I split the referral bonus with my partner, yeh? 65k QFF points and half of the 60k QFF referral bonus. 95k QFF in total.

        • Amex normally run a 100k QFF points sign up bonus a couple of times a year on the Qantas ultimate, could be worth waiting as that would be 130k if you use your partners referral or vise versa.

    • +3

Everytime I see this on these Amex signup deals with huge bonus points it makes me want to kill myself for getting that essential card first.

      • Same here :(

      • Jesus Christ I literally just applied for and received my Amex Essentials card 2 weeks ago :(

  • This makes the referral bonus of 30k no longer a good deal

    • How so?

      • +1

Normally it's: 10k for referee, and 15k for referrer.

This month is double referrer month so: 10k for referee, and 30k for referrer.

So if you were to refer a mate and split the bonus, you both get 20k each where as if you applied with this link you yourself get 50k.

  • -7

I think people have overlooked that one difference between applying direct or by affiliate is, when you apply through this link you get point but Amex get ongoing screen protection that this one does not provide for just one off points

    • I thought the Plat Edge never had screen cover, and it was only the Explorer and Essential that did?

      • -3

Try direct link and see yourself

    • +1

Just checked the direct AMEX site and Platinum Edge isn’t (and never has been) eligible for screen insurance.

Don’t drop your phone and you’ll be right.

  • As a family we are about to go to the US on holiday for 3 weeks. Would this help us? I was trying to figure the best way to deal with paying for stuff over there. Is the Amex card widely accepted over there? Are there transaction fees, possible benefits? My wife is thinking we should get the 28 Degrees card. The whole Aussie dollar transfer thing confuses the heck out of me.

    • +3

Yeah you'll be hit by foreign transaction fees, your wife is correct the 28 Degrees MC is the way to go or though there are a few other cards like the ING everyday Visa debit card that also has no international transaction fees and will credit you any ATM withdrawal fee providing you deposit $1000 a month and make 5 transactions. Citibank is another good one.

    • +6

This AmEx card (as well all Australian issued AmEx cards) have a 3% foreign currency conversion fee.
If you're confused, this is basically how it works:
Say you make a purchase of 10 USD.
Using Google, this is equivalent to ~13.58 AUD.
Assuming AmEx uses this rate (it might convert it to about 13.7 AUD or so using their own rate), they will then calculate 3% of this, so 41c, and add it to the transaction.
Your card then gets charged $14.11.
Over multiple transactions it'll add up fast.
The only card I know that waives these fees is the US issued AmEx Platinum Charge card (and possibly Centurion too).
To avoid these fees I'd recommend 28 Degrees or Citibank or Bankwest Zero, they're all annual fee free.
I personally use the Coles Rewards MasterCard.

      • +1

Great responses, thanks. Does the Coles rewards card have an annual fee?

        • +1

It does, mine is annual fee free at the moment.
          It's $99.

        • +1

          @MathNerd:
Ok thanks. I wonder if the rewards we will receive will justify the costs. I have 4 kids. This trip isn’t going to be cheap.

        • +1

@Dwil06: That's true. Just as a reference, 1 AUD gives you 2 flybuys points, and 2000 flybuys points gives you $10 off at Coles.
So using this valuation, you have to spend $1000 (AUD) to get $10, which is a 1% rate of return. To get the annual fee back, you'd have to spend 9.9 times as much, which is $9,900 (AUD). This is ~7289 USD.

        • +1

          @MathNerd:
Thanks, MathNerd, I think your math suggests I should just stick with an annual fee free option. Cheers.

        • @MathNerd:
How did you get the annual fee waived?

        • +1

@Dwil06: You're welcome. Have a great trip and let us know which card you end up applying for.

        • @jon: If you have the Coles No Annual Fee MasterCard, you can call to "upgrade" to the Rewards Card, at which point they offer it to you for the first year for free, then $99 after that. I'm close to the year being up so I don't know if the scenario is still the same.

        • @MathNerd:
The wife seems to be big on the 28 degrees platinum card. I dare say that’s the way we will go. I’ll just try to take a lump sum of US dollars with me for whenever it is required.

        • @Dwil06: Good on you. Go for the 28 Degrees then. It'll do you well.

        • @Dwil06: I personally would recommend the Bankwest Zero Mastercard over the 28 Degrees.

It's basically a better version of the 28 Degrees because it's still fee-free, but you also get Travel Insurance.

The only bad thing is there's a slightly higher min credit requirement ($6000) on the Bankwest which I assume also means a higher income requirement, and it also means it "occupies" more of your credit limit.

        • @jon: I was also able to negotiate a second year without the annual fee. Told them I wanted to cancel the card towards the end of the first year due to nor wanting to pay the annual fee and they offered to save the second year fee free.

        • @Heybargain: sorry is this for coles or amex card ?

        • @spk: coles (Sorry should have been clearer).

      • Mate are you sure Citibank has no foreign currency fees?
When I use my Signature card Citibank charges me 3%…

        • +3

Sorry, I should've been more specific. I was referring to the Citibank Plus account that comes with a Debit Card.

      • Good write up on ANZ RTA, only card I keep year on year. Usually just use Citibank for ATM, but used to do that with 28D and works well.

Make money on the fee if you pick the right return flight - i.e. Sydney<->Uluru can get up to $700+

      • Xdreamyst- Excellent write up.

Looks like you can use the credit on your card and withdraw money and not be slugged the cash advance fee overseas-

        Condition 3:

"ANZ will also waive the cash advance fee if you use your ANZ Rewards travel Adventures account to withdraw actual cash from a branch or ATM located overseas. A cash advance fee will apply to any other cash advances on your account. ATM operator fees may apply"

Xdreamyst- Did you get slugged any ATM operated fees in the US and which banks atm did you,use to avoid this fee in the US?

Also I assume you wouldn’t get any points on your card from withdrawing money?

  • Excluding the bonus points, what is the approximate return rate on points?

  • If i have a business AMEX card. Can i apply for a personal amex and be eligible for this promo ?

  • Is there any exclusion on what counts towards the $750 spend to get the points? Can we pay $750 worth of bills?

    • I don't think I've ever really seen an exclusion as such for what can qualify for minimum spend, so I believe the answer is yes, $750 worth of bills is fine.

  • From WebJet website

10,000 Membership Rewards points = $100 of travel OR 13,500 Membership Rewards Gateway points= $100 of travel!

what id the difference between MR points and MR gateway point

    • +1

Gateway is the entry level pts program that you get on the Essential and Explorer Amex cards.

      • Thanks a lot, can you please tell which points does this card earns. How do I find out more, it’s not very clear on the AMEX website

        • +1

The Platinum Edge earns Ascent (Membership Rewards).

      • Are these points worth the same value if redeeming gift cards? Because here I do not see any mention of two types of points.

        • Yes, no different cost for redeeming for GCs.

Generally people are gonna discourage you from redeeming GCs with your points though and say that you should save it up for flights (particularly flights in premium cabins of travel, e.g. Business/First class)

  • Thanks OP for this. I think you've got me. So, to apply 'via creditcardcompare.com' to get the bonus 50k points, I have to use that particular link and click the 'application' button? Is there anything else I have to do?
