I’ve been looking for a new TV and this seemed best price on the Sony A1 for a while.
Enjoy !!

Thanks for the input. Is there some way to check which year it would be from? My wife took the photo for me. I guess it doesn’t make much of a difference though if both years aren’t worthy.
A1 is 2017. A8F is 2018
I'm not sure that's right tbh, I just googled and found a review of a new A1 from yesterday.
https://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/sony-a1-oled
So I'm guessing that this one that OP posted is probably the 2017 model which reviewed well?
@Where's_That_Cake: I’m pretty sure that’s just a dodgy date to make us think it’s a recent review.
It might be a trick to get themselves higher in the google result algorithm for example. Reading the content I found “The Sony A1 has been my most anticipated TV of 2017” so it seems old to me.
Or better yet, I went to the Sony TV page and sorted newest to oldest.
Here A1 down the bottom and A8F near the top with the rest of the 2018 “F” models.
For some background I’ve been closely watching OLED TVs and their prices for the last couple of years so I’m 99% sure I’m right here, but could be wrong; happy to be corrected.
A sales guy at JB told me last week there’s a newer model due later this year that will be better than both the A1 and A8F (from his Sony training). He also confirmed there’s not a lot of difference between the A1 and A8F as you said above.
edited cause I reread my post and came originally came across as maybe replying harshly which wasn’t my intention. I have 14 month old twins so I was just trying to reply quickly and didn’t spend time writing properly
@Occas: All good, I do it all the time lol
@Occas: I recently bought the A8F for $4335 after cashback from Cashrewards, from Sony direct.
The 2017 A1 & 2018 A8F are exactly the same tvs, except for how they sit. Not much difference in their features. Only reason I went for the A8F was because there wasnt much of a price difference between the 2.
The new tv's the salesman was talking about is the rumoured A9F which has Sony's X1 Ultimate processing chip for upscaling which they reckon is a lot better than the current A1 Extreme processor chip.
I was in a dilemma to wait, but then, I wasnt sure what the price difference was going to be if and when the A9F got released. So I jumped on this
@aspirepranesh: Thank you very much, appreciate it.
I’ll bet it’s still a very nice TV though right? How’s standard definition free to air look?
@Occas: to be honest, I have never watched a lot of Free to air tv in the last 4 years. All of my stuff is either from my NAS which has all my movies/tv shows and Netflix/Youtube.
Cinema Pro mode on the A8F is bloody good! I am talking about this in reference to the Sony 4K tv from last year I purchased.
@aspirepranesh: That’s fair enough. Wish I could say the same but there’s some stuff we watch that’s SD.
Do you find yourself switching picture modes depending on what content you’re watching, or did you just set it up so it looked good and leave it?
@Occas: I do change picture modes. Anything from my NAS/Netflix is on cinema home/pro mode, YouTube is generally under standard mode. One issue I've tho is that the tv is close to the couch, so the sd content does look a bit pixelated. In hindsight I think a 55" wud have been ideal for my current apartment. Went for 65" to future proof.
But my understanding was that lg oled TV's are more suited for free to air content than sony.
Bear in mind, lg supply the oled panels to sony and Panasonic. So it's really the processing and the os difference across the three brands
@aspirepranesh: I need to go check out my mates 65 LG I think. Thank you!
I think their main issue was that for the premium price you're not getting a special TV. The one that really caught my eye was saying that this was really just a Sony name stamped onto a Frankenstein TV. I'm yet to buy an OLED but I think I'd do some homework before diving in if I were you mate.
Also what I’ve heard/read. LG panel, etc etc.
I’ve been close with the LG 55 B7s dipping under $2k but can’t justify it yet.
I have a mate with a 65 B7 I’ve been meaning to go round to his house to see what I think about how SD free to air TV looks. That’s what I would be using it for 90% of the time, so if it doesn’t look much better than my Sony 55 FHD for that purpose then I’m not sold.
@Occas: I would recommend having a look at the Samsung Q9F qled TV as well if u can at jb hifi. Their brightness levels are thro the roof, and from what I hear 2018 Samsung's have massively improved on how close they can get to oled panels
@aspirepranesh: I’ve been ignoring the QLEDs since I learned they’re not really quantum panels which only exist in labs apparently. But yes I’d heard this year’s models were improved. I’ll add them into my “check out” list.
"God awful reviews"
And where would I find said reviews, either on the A1, or newer AF8?
On my Google News stream, sorry I don't usually bookmark these things.
I would have to disagree. Check here, here and here
LG Oled's are good, but no where close to Sony's upscaling capabilities right out of the box. I prefer Android tv's because I can install native Synology apps to run upscaled movies from my NAS. Sony do add their premium price tag to it, but if you check my 2 recent posts about the A8F and the LG C8, there is not much of a price difference.
The lowest 65" C8 was $4490, and A8F advertised was $4670, but like I mentioned above, I got mine using cashrewards for $4335, which is cheaper than the C8
+1 on Android TV - I've used both it and WebOS (LG), and for ME PERSONALLY I don't know why LG bother.
It must surely be far easier to adopt Android TV, with it's Google updates and Apps, so why they stick to their proprietary horrible UI (again MHO) is beyond me.
For that reason alone I lean towards the Sony. But if the LG was SO MUCH CHEAPER I could get an nVidia Shield with it would be the only reason I'd buy it.
Not comparable. Different technology.
Not quite a Ferrari vs Hyundai argument but getting there.
Samsung QF9 is same price at Costco
Not OLED though. Would you consider QLED on the Samsung comparable to OLED?
No. Sorry didn't realise it was QLed.
Here are prices from the 26th June at Costco
Costco prices 26/06/18
Sony 65 A1 Oled $4299.99 save $1200
Samsung 65 Q9F Oled $4299.99 save $1600.01
LG 65 C6T Oled $3999.99
Sony 65 X85F Led $2399.98 save $400
Sony 75 X85F Led $3899.99 save $600
Samsung 75 QF7 Oled $8599.99
Samsung 75 NU7100 Led $2849.99 save$450
Samsung 75 UA75NU8000 $3849.99 save$950
Assuming the Sony shares the same panel as the LG, you’re basically paying $300 for the Sony image processing which is apparently the best of the bunch.
Can I ask where you get your prices? I’m assuming there is an easier way than asking my wife to take photos for me.
@timi2fly: I’ve never found anything aside from occasional forum posts like this one. I think last I looked, the US Costco has its prices online but for some reason Aus doesn’t.
Sorry my question was really directed to Regie69 given his nice list of current deals.
@timi2fly: Understood. I was just throwing in my 2c/experience as I’ve also often wanted their current prices without having to go to the actual store myself. I’ll be quiet now.
@Occas: I did the reply using my phone so I couldn't tag Regie69 in it. If you read this though Regie69, please let us know if there is somewhere we should be looking.
@timi2fly: please Regie69!
@timi2fly: Yep i took photos when i was there last week
As Regie69 listed prices from June 26 I assume he just got pics or was at Costco himself and noted prices from that day.
Costco does not list their TV prices anywhere as far as I know.
You better get in quick as according to the price ticket this $1200 discount deal expires today.
This tv received god awful reviews recently if it's the new model. Apparently they didn't fix anything from the old model and just basically changed its aesthetics.
