For those that want to see inside this beast: https://www.dell.com/support/article/au/en/audhs1/sln296022/…

    • +2

      Thanks mate :)

    • +3

      What a nightmare

      • +3

It's the price you pay for cramming so much into such a small case, although they're not too bad to work on

        • +2

agreed they come apart easy enough

        • @bobsmidie:

Agreed. Got mine today and took it apart in literally 30sec. MiniPCIE card easily accessible…

  • Can anyone recommend some RAM to bump this to 8 or 16gb total on the cheap?

    • +4

Any DDR3 DIMM RAM will do. Will auto adjust timing and speed to the lowest stick. Look on Gumtree. Can get 8GB for $40 or 16GB for $80.

    • If you are planning to just throw an additional stick at it, grab a 1600mhz unit.
If replacing both sticks, buy a pair/kit.
With these OEM MOBO's you are limited to timing adjustment in XTU.
I do not believe XTU supports timming adjustment for Ivy Bridge

For those interested, note that this is the USFF rather than SFF, so a graphics card cannot be fitted.

  • Can it run Nox player? I have couple of old PC that can't run bignox. When I run Nox on them it shows all black instead of emulator screen.

  • Can this run 1080p 60fps?

    • +3

      movies yes, games no.

      • +7

Of course it can, if you count solitaire.

        • +6

nope, solitaire (and other windows UI) does not render frames continuously, only on events/updates. so no 60 fps here!

        • @xEnt:

Just move the cards faster ;)

        • Hi, do you have option for memory upgrade?

  • +4

Almost cheaper than an OEM win10 Pro licence (unless you have ways ;-p).

Looks great for Web browsing and YouTube for Granny who hates tablets.

    • +1

old folk homes should be full of these machines, should be no need to book computer time as a vacant machine is always available …. great for people using mainly browsers and a few apps …. add a cheap ssd and they are ready to go for another few years.

  • Plex sever?

    • +3

It should be fine for that. With a 6600 passmark it could potentially transcode 3 10Mbps H.264 1080 streams at once.

      • Ok thanks. Currently using an old laptop but it runs loud and hot. This could be a better option

      • Thanks for the advice - I was wondering about this too!

    • +1

I'm running one of these as a Plex server (in a VM no less!) and it's terrific. Happily streams to three clients (including one over the internet) without breaking a sweat.

    • There are probably lower power options, if you want 24/7 server. But this is not too bad.

      • With W10 its fairly ease to dial back the power under certain conditions.
Obviously the systems components are still not going to be as power efficent as the latests tech.

  • +1

Remember guys that this is a USFF model and not the SFF model. This means no throwing in SFF graphics cards into this as it doesn't even have any PCIE slots

    • And no 3.5 inch either!

  • My laptop is an Acer E5-511-P214. It's about four years old and I'm looking to get a new desktop to replace the laptop. My laptop has 8gb of ram vs this one at 4, and the hard drive on my laptop is 1tb vs this 320. I'm not really good with comparing or reading tech specs, but if I bought more RAM and another hard drive for this desktop would it be comparable in speed/power to the laptop?

I just looked at the CPU for the laptop and it's Intel Pentium quad core processor N3540 (up to 2.66 GHz). Can someone help this n00b, please?!

    • +1

Yes, this should be substantially faster than your laptop.

It's NOT the best, it's not going to beat a modern CPU, but the performance gap between 3rd and 8th gen desktop processors is nowhere near as wide as the gap between 3rd and 8th gen mobile processors.

      • Would you say that upgrading the RAM to either 8gb or 16gb be essential for this?

        • +1

I wouldn't say essential. It depends on your workload…

        • @Zorlin: I work from home, so I'd be on it most of the working day. I use the 2016 Office Suite, which I would say would be the biggest system hog. I use normal programs like Chrome, Firefox, Filezilla, Skype, NordVPN, a couple of other programs that I know are lightweight. I'm not using Photoshop or anything huge like that that requires a big graphics thing or anything. If the CPU on this is as good/even better than my laptop then I'm sure everything would be fine. Oh, I run a Plex server too but I'm not streaming remotely, just in the household, if that makes any difference!

          Appreciate your replies, buddy!

        • +3

          @Zorlin:

Most recommended suggestion would be bump the ram to 8Gb and install a SSD.

        • @moneymoo: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-N3540-vs-…
Just to give you an idea, beware that this one has the S model so it might be a tiny bit slower than the benchmark but still should trump your laptop's CPU.

        • @Basimx: Thank you, that was very helpful!

        • @Calmago: Thanks, I think I'm going to buy it, so I'll buy a RAM upgrade too.

        • +1

@moneymoo: Like he said an SSD is pretty important too and now is especially a good time to buy one since there are millions of deals popping up on ozbargain. +4 GB of ram and an SSD and you will have a nice desktop PC for the family. I have a CPU slower than this for my own rig which I use for gaming and can play almost any game maxed out @1080p so it's quite the beast. I don't think you will be able to find a GPU to fit in this though which would mean no gaming.

        • @Basimx: All right, I'll get one of them too. Cheers!

        • @Basimx: Re your edit: I don't do gaming on the PC, so that's no problems! It's basically just for MS Office and other office-related things.

        • +1

          @moneymoo:

My work PC until recently (replaced the i3 cpu for a i7-3770) was an i3-3220 with 16GB RAM and a Samsung 850 Evo SSD.
The CPU offer in this deal performs favourably over a i3-3220
From your described workload I would image the system on offer + 4gb of ram + SSD will be perfectly fine.

        • +1

          your current processor score 1937

          and this deal score 6691

would say it's 3.45 times faster.

        • @dlovep: could even be more if his laptop thermal throttles

  • The issue with using this as a media machine is that it does not have any HDMI ports. You would have to buy a display adapter for video conversion to HDMI. Getting 5.1 sound would would be a problem right?

    • No, DP is compatible with HDMI.
Just get a suitable cable (dp->hdmi).
      Sound is no problem either.

You will not get hdmi 2.0 for 4K 60Hz, not that you should care.

    • The audio software installed when install audio driver can get all 4 ports at 7.1, just a bit ugly cables going front to end.

    • Not really an issue when DP to HDMI adapter cost like 3 bucks

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/kebidu-DP-to-HDMI-Adapter-Di…

  • Also wifi connection. How would you get a wifi card in this tiny machine?

    • +1

      USB port

    • There is a WLAN card slot on the motherboard, though it would be easier and cheaper to plug in a USB WiFi adaptor since you'll need to get not only the card but the antennas as well.

  • Anyone know if it's possible to put the main board in a standard atx case and atx power supply ?

    • No. Dell mobos are mostly proprietary

  • These guys are a good company and have some good shop deals. Free shipping, or if you are in Brisbane go direct to shop https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/
