Can confirm I have got it too.
Eventually found it by first clicking 'wallet' tab (desktop version of paypal page) then on that page you can see it in the 'offers' section on the left hand side.
Thanks OP for an amazing first post!

    • Yes i just checked i got it too :)

    • …ahhh…so it is a voucher of sorts….lovely…..now to find something for $20 to spend this on…

    • thanks for that post. just found mine as well.

      now to cancel my ad

This is only going to cause many people to list their cars up for "sale" without any intention of actually selling it..

    • +68

      Is your car still available?

      • +66

Would you swap for a bike, ps2, carton and pack of smokes?

        • +48

Sorry, I'm firm on the asking price:

          $10,000,000

        • +9

          @Scrooge McDuck:
I'll give you a half bag of chips, and I am taking a big risk here

        • +23

          @Scrooge McDuck:

I'll pay that, I work on an oil rig (or for an underwater exploration company) and want to buy it for my father…

Sorry mate. You just missed it! A bloke came from interstate and picked it up this morning.

Awesome! Disregard what I said to the other guy, it's still available.

Just show me a screenshot of the transfer receipt and I'll ship it to you at my expense.

        • +2

@Scrooge McDuck: Alright deal. Can you post it?

        • +7

          @Munki:

Alright deal. Can you post it?

I'll start disassembling it now. Are 1kg satchels OK? Should be able to fit it in 1,600.

        • +3

          @Scrooge McDuck:

I'll start disassembling it now. Are 1kg satchels OK? Should be able to fit it in 1,600.

I'll need to pay someone to receive the satchels in that case, so can you include a money order for $5000? Once I've got it and it's reassembled, I'll transfer the $5000, plus another $1000 for your trouble.

        • +5

@Scrooge McDuck: Sure. Do you take Western Union?

        • +1

          @rover:
That's convenient. I work on the same rig! You can pay me cash in hand.

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: Yes, and we have this reputed escrow service company for the safety of us both. You could safely hand over the car to them, and I will hand over the cash to them as well!

        • +2

you forgot to put SERIOUS CASH BUYER in all caps.

        • @cannedhams: If its not in All caps its not legit.

        • +2

@Scrooge McDuck: I'll take it…the money is ready in a Nigerian account for you…however to access it, you need to moneygram $5k to the legal firms address so they can start processing the transfer.

        • No, but i'd be interested in a fish tank

        • @TheMostHated: Also, he forgot to mention he's not really wanting to sell, was a ladies' car, he still loves it but its being wasted as its no longer being used. Of course its good (for its age) and he had no trouble with it (whilst running it into the ground for the last 6 years), and is mostly accepting EOIs. Oh, and NO TIME WASTERS

      • +1

I'll say yes, even though I don't think you'll ever reply again. And because I reckon the guy who's going to pick it up this afternoon won't show up.

      • +6

I’m selling mine because it’s an unwanted present

    • +2

I actually don't mind selling my car for 33% higher than market value, doesn't hurt to list ;)

  • +14

Each eligible individual who completes the above steps during the Promotion Period will receive a reward of $20 (Australian Dollars) deposited into the balance of their linked PayPal account on or around 6 June.

So you either have to wait a year or go back in time?

    • +2

I assume it's meant to be July 6th!

    • +17

      Anyone selling a Delorean?

      • +2

You can buy mine, I'll list it up now

        • +7

          you bought mine next week.

    • +11

I wonder if Gumtree can use this 'typo' as an excuse not to honour the $20…

    • It’s says or around 6 June

Could be 20 December for all I know lol

  • This seems ripe for taking advantage of - list your car for sale - tell anybody who calls that is has sold already - easy. What is stopping this from happening? Seems a bit too good to be true.

    • +29

or list it for 10x what its worth and have no body call up at all and not having to tell anyone anything.. even easier

      • +10

I know what I've got. No lowballers!

      • +20

You will still get a lot of people contacting you asking if you are willing to swap for 1989 Holden Barina or accept 20x less than value in cash that they can give you on the same day!

I hate selling shit on gumtree :(

      • Or list it for about market price and then mark as sold a day later, less suspicious.

    • +4

That's exactly the point of this. $20 isn't much to bolster the ratings and get people to say "Wow Gumtree is good to sell cars, look at how many people are doing it!"

It's a marketing scheme that'll probably cost much less than a real one.

      • +2

I suspect linking a gumtree profile to a confirmed ID (paypal account in this case) is worth something their big data machine too.

        • +1

(profanity) I hate the sale of information.

  • ..ok, i can list your car..

  • +13

Expect to see many obviously overpriced cars on Gumtree

    • +11

i always expect to see that on gumtree

    • Most things on gumtree are already overpriced

  • +11

Need to link your Paypal account. I'll pass.

    • +2

Why? How else are you supposed to get the money?

      • +1

Send it to my Paypal account without forcing me to link it to Gumtree. Just like almost every cashback promo that other businesses run.

        • +3

Gumtree is owned by eBay, eBay is owned by PayPal…what's the difference..

        • +5

          @Pikaloo:

PayPal doesn't own Ebay, it was the other way around. But now Ebay is breaking up with PayPal and plans to go with Ayden

        • +1

@FeZZa21: PayPal and eBay are very much still interlinked. Like always on the stock market, the paper split is just another way for their fat cats to get another bonus.

you will need to add your car report which cost around 19 bucks, so for all that trouble, you are making $1

    • +19

You don't have to add the car report, that is just their tip for selling your car.
You can list it for free.

      • +6

        i stand corrected!

        • +12

          That's okay. Sit down :)

    • +1

Yeah the car report isnt required to qualify for the $20.

    • +5

Also buy the car report from the government and not the 'official' third party websites

      https://www.ppsr.gov.au/

      Should cost about $4

      • +2

Good advice. Same goes for electricity plan and health plan comparison sites - use the govt ones not pay-to-play ones with cute characters.

  • Haha this can be easily abused.

  • +2

Hmm would I do this for $20? Probably

  • Any negatives with linking paypal to gumtree?

    • -1

Doubt it…they are all owned by eBay

      • +1

eBay doesn't own PayPal anymore. They spun it off in 2015.

    • I linked mine, its fine. It's like linking it to an eBay account.

  • +4

My wife's car hasn't been washed in about 2 months…plus its an Opel Astra….perfect car to put up for sale and expect ZERO inquiries haha.

    • +1

      Only 2 months? Rookie!

    • +10

      hi is this still avaliable?

      • +2

Can you hold it until next Thursday? Because I am a 24-hour emergency Neurosurgeon and that is my only afternoon off. Also, would you take $500? SERIOUS CASH OFFER.

        • You can tell the offer is legit because its in all caps.

        • i love how a neurosurgeon can only afford a $500 car

    • +1

      What's your best offer?

    • +4

hi i work interstate but am happy with pic and will buy without inspection,, i will pay with paypal it is very safe and secure method, look forward to hearing from you

  • +9

Never seen so many ozbargainers turn down free $20

  • anyone have a VIN I can borrow? Thanks

    • Call up mates or relatives

    • +13

      Sure.

      8008135

    • +2

      90210.

      Thank me later.

    • +5

Just go to the VicRoads registration check thing and type in any valid Victorian registration number (if you don't know one, try any combination in the format ααα### until you get one that works) and it will tell you the corresponding VIN, year, colour, and make.

      • +4

And if anyone thinks that’s scary just a little reminder that the Victorian Taxi Council can access your browsing history without a warrant. You don’t even need to be Victorian.

        • +3

Ahh the apathy of the Australian people that has got us here.

"She'll be right, the gubbmint will look after me"

        • Why on Earth would the Taxi Council be interested in my porn viewing habits?

        • Victorian Taxi Council

          No such thing.

        • @cannedhams: Maybe because it is worth more than driving a cab?

Or worth something, very small, but something none the less. And it can be collected automatically, without fear of redress, along with millions of other tradeable records until 10 years later, the idiots that thought allowing this kind of abuse wasn't risky decide someone should now close the gate. That way they can be paid to smoke more cigars, while everyone else goes looking for all the lost cows.

Carsales already has VIN's listed … just copy an ad from there … you'll be doing them a favor…

    • Find your car's vin then change a couple of the middle numbers.

    • +6

I’ll contact vin diesel and see if he has any

  • +5

Because of this deal i'll stop looking for a car on Gumtree.

    • But 20 others will see all the cars and assume it's the best market. GumTree wins every time.

  • +1

I drive a company car, can I list that for sale?

    • Depends on your company policy?

      • +6

Section 14D you (you) shall not list the car on gumtree. This applies irrespective of any $20 incentive.

      • I doubt any company has a policy that allows you to advertise their cars for sale. BUT would Gumtree still pay me if I did list it?

BTW I'm not really considering doing this, just wondering.

        • List it - just remember not to list in all caps so the people know its a fake offer.

          Why not?

    • Please post the vin so that I can verify

  • +6

    Go to Carsales.com.au
Inquire about a random car and ask for VIN
Come to gumtree and list the car under a random email.
Make a PayPal account with the random email and link to gumtree
When $20 is deposited into the PayPal account, use it to buy some random item from aliexpress

    Enjoy
