They're brilliant
My boss uses one and it's always with her wherever she goes. Any model is great for general office/business work, and from what I understand the higher-end Surfaces are great for design/illustration work too.
I'm still on thick & beefy Acer Predator laptops for my VR & gamedev work — the Surfaces typically don't run VR very well. But if you're just coming from a Macbook Air, anything is an upgrade when it comes to the gaming department!
The Surface Book 2 15" (GTX 1060) can run VR quite well! All i7 options of the Book 2 have a GTX1050/1060 and are good for all uses and gaming
On paper, but not in practicality. =( Might be good for ~30 minute sessions, but not as an intense gamer or as a game developer.

@bigfootaus: it might have improved with an update or varies by task - my friend uses his 15" one for VR perfectly fine
@bigfootaus: That part of the review makes no sense. If the battery is losing charge even when being charged, then there is a major issue. They would have supplied a larger charger if it was necessary. But a larger charger was not required. A modicum of looking into it reveals that Microsoft sent them a new charger and the issue went away. Of course, being "inept" at reviews meant that they did not amend the original article whatsoever. Read their followup here: https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/16/16658466/microsoft-surfa…
This is why a single review or a couple comments on xda should be taken with a grain of salt.
Plus, AMEX offer
Is this the $50 off offer, if you spend $350?
Wow 20% off surface studio is good. Never discounted
about time to phase out 6th gen i5/i7 + gtx965m/980m
The surface laptop or the surface bro at $878?
I have a Surface Pro 3 as my primary device through work. I've had it for about 3.5 years, using it heavily almost every day.
Although I love the device, the worst thing about it is the battery cannot be replaced. My battery now goes flat after 2 hours of normal use, and there is no way to replace it without opening it (not a chance).
Not so bad for me, as I will be able to get another through work in a few months. Just be aware of it if you are buying it yourself. My Dad got 9 years out of his last laptop by upgrading memory and replacing the battery twice. No way you would get 9 years out of this.
No way you would get 9 years out of this.
Why not? You said it yourself that it can self-serviced by opening it.
Maybe I wasn't clear - it's really difficult to open, completely voids the warranty (if any is left) and is a pain in the ass to put back together. I wouldn't have confidence to do it properly myself.
7th gen processors?
Maybe HN are clearing stock for 8th gen release?
It's on sale everywhere
Hmmm maybe I am right then?
Yep,
New models scheduled for release this month sometimeAny source for that? I haven't been able to find any announcement info.
Yeah I don't get anyone who shells out top dollar (20% off is still top dollar) for half the cores they could get. 7th to 8th gen is a massive jump in grunt
I'm really tempted by the Surface Laptop for $878, I'm just worried about longevity. Will 4GB RAM be enough for a casual user in say, 3 years? Or will it be slow if I try to play music, open a word doc, and have some tabs in chrome open at the same time?
I'd say 4GB is borderline unacceptable on any laptop today, especially if you're spending almost $900 on a laptop, unless you're using it for very light tasks.
The other annoying thing is that Microsoft overcharges through the nose for storage and RAM upgrades. I'd say just upgrade it yourself, except that microsoft devices, especially the surface laptop are impossible to open without destroying it.
I personally would not buy a laptop with less than 8GB of RAM these days, I severely regret going for a 4GB config on my lenovo.
I dont think the price points of the various models necessarily reflect the cost of the models.
I could easily see MS settings the price of the low-end versions especially low so that they get you interested - it's much easier to upsell you than to get you interested if the price is too high.
I think the other issue with these products is that price difference between the 4GB and 8GB is too much, literally 700 more for that, I think that's where it puts a lot of people off, if just $300 - 400, then it would be ok I guess…
That's if you get the larger hard drive too. There is an i5 8GB 128GB config at JB on 15% off atm for $1273. That's the other one I'm considering. Sale ends at the end of the month.
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/microsof…That looks good, thanks!
Basically no. Go for 8 minimium.
That seems to be the consensus, so I guess I'm forking out the extra $400. It just seems like a lot to pay for an extra 4gb, I feel cheated.
I totally agree. the extra $$$ for 4GB seems very high.
I feel cheated
So don't do it then.
Jequila - did you fork out the additional $400?
Paying 50% extra for 4 more gigs of RAM could not be justified by the Ozbargainer in me, and I went for the $878 4gig model. This review by Dave2D on YouTube reassured me. This guy is a great reviewer and always looks at things practically.
I think the 4gig ram 128 gig SSD model will be fine for daily use taking to Uni for notes, lectures etc. And fine for typical Uni student needs (not gaming).
And can be written off with less tears if dropped, lost etc.
Not yet, I'm still on the fence. 50% extra for 4gb ram is definitely crazy, but I do draw a bit and it would be nice to be able to use photoshop or sai on it. My current desktop is still going strong, but it's 3 years old. In another couple of years I might ditch having a desktop at all and this new laptop might be my main for a while, so I don't want to get anything too basic.
How are you finding the 4gb?
@Jequila: Only ordered on Sat. Looking forward to the new toy arriving!
With 4gb ram, 7th gen CPU, and limited connectivity, it's basically an upmarket netbook.
Oh someone already had this profile picture idea lol, damn…
Cheers for post OP
which one of you is the imposter
My DP is more HD so I obviously win ;)
can't afford it but damn the surface laptop looks good (aesthetically)
Price matched with JB Hi-Fi for $2344. Paid with JB Hi-Fi gift cards that I got 5% off for from RACQ lifestyle membership to get it for $2226.80.
This is for the surface book 2 13.5 i7 256Gb 8Gb.I'm planning to get JB gift cards from RACQ too, but I noticed the website says there may be a limit to how much you can buy in a certain time period. Did you have any trouble buying $2000 worth?
Firstly, one transaction at JB allows for a maximum of five gift cards. I tried getting 5 x $500 gift cards and it gave me an error, saying "Limit reached". So I tried 4 x's and it worked, then when I reached the cart I increased it to 5 x's and it worked. Hope that helps!
To answer your question, I bought $2500 worth.
Nice! So you bought it online - how did you do the price match? Is there an online facility for that?
Thanks.
Whats racq?
VIC called RACQ, NSW called NRMA member
VIC is racV
The JB I went to won't price match Harvey Norman.
What's with that?

How come the Surface Book 2 15inch is not on discount?
Make sure you decide that the 20% discount is worth missing out on the HUGE performance gain that will occur with the forthcoming refresh of the Surface line.
Going from a 7th generation i5 which has 2 cores to an 8th generation i5 which has 4 cores will increase performance far more than the current 7th gen i7. About 70% !
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/kaby-lake-refresh-8th-gen…
Will the update also be for the i5 Surface Book 2?
The 13 inch and 15 inch Book 2 already are 8th generation chips (apart from the entry level i5 model 13 inch which is a lot cheaper) so if there is any forthcoming refresh, it isn't as dramatic as you saying
The next sale 20% will probably be in December.
Anyone have a surface laptop? I love the look of them and this is a decent price. Running a MacBook air at the moment and really could do with an upgrade but not sold on any of the current Mac options
