  • I feel like this wouldn't even be as good as a phone camera though.

    • +2

you'd be dreaming, your phone camera may have all the bell and whistle but image quality will trail behind, particularly in low light condition

      • +1

I would take a phone over this anyday for low light….your phone likely has a faster lens, same sensor size (or possibly bigger), bigger pixels, better iso performance and better optimised software for noise reduction.

        • +5

you sure on bigger sensor ?

not all phones are nokia 808 though

        • @phunkydude: maybe not all of them, but pretty much most of the recent non Apple phones (except the x which is 1/2") have comparable sensor size

        • @phunkydude: off topic but I'm glad there are others who still remember the epic era of n8 and 808.

      • Not so sure. My galaxy S8 is way better in low light than my 18MP Sony bridge camera, which has a way bigger lense.

      • F3.2 to f6.9… My samsung note 8 has an aperture of F1.7,that's about 3 stops brighter than this camera. When this camera needs to use iso800, mine uses iso100…

So nope I don't think this camera can be used in low light.

        • Just did a search. f3.2 is 4 stops slower than f1.8.. It actually needs iso1600 when a normal phone camera uses iso100.

        • -1

@wongjy12: No it's not. An f-stop is defined as the square root of 2. 3.2/1.8 is somewhere between 1 and 2 stops, not 3 or 4 stops. Also ISO 1600 is 16 times faster than ISO 100, or 32 f-stops.

Why square root? It's to do with f-stops being defined as a ratio with the lens focal length. However a stop with twice the diameter has 4 times the area and lets in 4 times the light.

        • +1

@greenpossum: to correct, 1 stop is 2x amount of light, means 2x exposure time or ISO or the square root of aperture, as the amount of light/area of aperture is square of aperture size.

The difference between ISO 100 and 1600 is 16 times or 2^4 or 4 stops. The difference between f3.2 and f1.8 is approx 3 stops.

This isux has the sensor size of 1/2.3 while Note 8 has 1/2.5, which is quite close, but comparing to 1/3" sensor of iphone 7 the difference becomes more significant.

Most of phone have a fixes lens, which is much easier to achieve high quality comparing to 8x zoom, but I'd expect this camera to be better when zoomed in. If you zoom in 8x 12MP image from the phone you would end up with 0.2MP image (except of a few phones with dual cameras with different focal length).

        • @pdima:

The difference between f3.2 and f1.8 is approx 3 stops.

          No, 3.2/1.8 is about 1.7, between 1 and 2 stops, i.e. between 1.4 and 2.0. Use a calculator.

          You're right about 16x being 4 f-stops though.

Back in the old days, f/2.0 for a 50mm lens was easy to achieve, and it got harder and harder to go down. Pentax once made a f/0.95 lens for bragging rights.

        • @greenpossum: you are right, it's between 1 and 2 stops difference. I miscalculated with the linear amount of light difference (around 3 times, 3 stops would be 8 times).

    • +4

Would be better than most camera phones, however the best camera is the one you have with you, which is more often the phone…

      • +4

Yeah sales of P&S cameras took a big hit when phone cameras got good enough. Most people prefer the convenience over any advantage in quality.

When I get my next phone I'm giving away my P&S.

    • You are absolutely right on this. Phone cameras are integrated with better pose-processing software if you shoot jpeg. Moreover, you can shoot raw with your iPhone and most Android phones in low light situation, but this DC camera is not able to do that.

    • +3

This camera has a big advantage of not automatically uploading your photos to "the cloud".

      Good for those intimate moments.
      Big sensor for low light,
      Optical zoom,
      Xenon flash

      • bang on with privacy, no GPS chip like phone camera that encrypts GPS coordinates in the image

        • I found turning off the phone GPS made it more difficult for the Predator UAVs to follow me. I was looking for a camera that I could shoot in RAW for fishing photos. Standing in a fast flowing river with your phone or dslr isn't optimal. Might go for an Olympus TG.

  • +1

I am struggling to think of a use for this. Maybe to replace the disposable cameras of yore?

The 8x optical zoom is the only positive for that, but I am not convinced that the 8x zoom photos are going to be much better than a cropped photo with your phone…

I guess if you needed a new point and shoot (maybe as a gift) this is the way to go. If you are planning on using it for photos I'd look for a second hand S90 or S95 for around the same price.

    • Optical zoom should be MUCH better than a cropped photo. I'd also be willing to bet that actual pictures pre-processing will turn out much better than a smartphone too.

      • Why guess? Have a look at them

It is not a great camera. It is a cheap beginner camera. It is probably an adequate camera, even, but you cannot convince me that a smart phone from the last 2 years cannot take better images than those.

The problem with the long zoom is that it has a wide open apeture of 6.9, which unless you are in super well lit areas is going to lead to long shutter speed and blurring due to hand shake making the images even worse.

        • Wow those images are actually pretty poor for a dedicated digital camera.

        • Completely agree, a second hand S90/95 would be a much better camera.

  • Ouch, bought this for $165 a month ago from JB for my holiday trip, that sucks :(

    • +1

      that hurts..
check with JB staff in store and see if they can refund the difference or offer something..

      • Oops, sorry ended up getting the black colour from Big W.

  • +1

No CHDK firmware on this model.

  • Wifi? If not forget it.

  • +1

They should make a camera that doubles as a phone.

    • +3

And put a clock, GPS and Internet on it too.

      • you forgot Alexa / Siri / Cortana
