          +1 for 'speark'

    • This one definitely worth of money as 2 years ago, i confuse between this speaker and logitech z5500.
but finally i bought this one because 2 years ago when boxing day in sydney they got 15% disc and i have another 10% disc from staff card.
As bose never had sale and disc before, so this offer is pretty good!!

Whatever you think about Bose. It is a good price (for a potentially overpriced brand) but hey, if you are going to get them this would be a good opportunity. +ve from me. I personally would consider getting Bose only because for there's not much else as far a decent "computer speakers". Am keen to see and hear what others think of this…

    • M-Audio AV40 is decent for computer speakers

      • audioengine / klipsch also good at this price range.

Also realize that $500 for a 2.1 system is a niche market - most people would be going 5.1 for that price.

Either that or you could get something similar to this set for cheaper - aka audioengine/klipsch/maudio etc etc.

But this one have surround speaker if you have tried this one and in that speaker have 2 hole which make this speaker 4.1 instead of 5.1..^^

        • At the risk of getting off topic: I like your suggestion a lot. But where can you get Klipsch locally these days? I def would consider them but haven't had much luck tracking any down. I'll look into audioengine. Thanks for the suggestion.

        • yes klipsch are hard to get a hold of these days because hardly anybody wants to buy such cheap "high end" speakers klipsch normally starts around the $1k mark.

if you're after clarity rather than booming bass - also try any of these

          http://www.cranbournemusic.com.au/cstore/scan/fi=products/co…

i know pccasegear stocks audioengine. they used to stock klipsch too but I guess nobody bought them.

Again this price point is just hard to fill - most people would probably go for a sony/pioneer level 5.1 dvd/entertainment centre setup from jbhifi or other.

          http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/home%20theatre/home%20theatre…
          something like this.

Proper studio monitors with sub from proper audio companies normally start around $800.

    • You haven't looked very hard, there's numerous speakers that would out perform Bose for that price.

  • Bose Companion 5 are 5.1 and not 2.1 as suggested by op
    http://worldwide.bose.com/axa/en_au/web/companion_5/page.htm…

    • they are 2.1 not 5.1 - they say 5.1 input.
thats exactly the problem with bose - too much marketing mumbo jumbo.

    What about the z5500 for $295 delivered? - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/37753

    • I like your thinking. This would be a good option I suppose if you like or even don't mind Logitech.

I perhaps shouldn't talk too much about it here but I must say that Logitech is a brand that makes me cringe when it comes to speakers. Even just the look of them (and please don't get me wrong, it's all about the sound of course but) they just don't even look well made. They just aren't a serious audio tech company. I just remember them as a brand that made basic peripherals.

I like your suggestion but the suggestions made by Mescalito and voter1 above I think are more my thing.

P.S. I clicked "+" thinking it would expand so I could reply to your this post that way. Just thought I'd explain the contradicting reply.

      • No worries mate…just threw the suggestion out there.

  • If you are in this sort of price bracket you can get some seriously good speakers like http://axiomaudio.com/audiobytecomputerspeakers.html

  • Its a good speaker but nothing in it that's worth $400+.

My friend has one and I must say its a nice accessories for his modern apartment but sound wise its not much different to my old AC451 Altec Lansing.

But if you need the style, Bose is very stylish. My Sounddock envies my guests even til now.

    • single driver speakers physically can't be good in terms of sound quality.

  • BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment.

    • I always thought is was for Baltic Open Sea Experiment?

  • +1

I bought this 3 years ago when it just came out. Well, it does look good on my desk n doesnt make me look like a comp geek. For the same sound quality, you can get cheaper in other brand. Its sound signature is the same as other bose: muddy n bassy. Its NOT 5.1!! They call it "Virtual" 5.1 which basically is 2.1.

Friends don't let friends buy BOSE.

Bose are horrible speakers for the price, go audioengine or even logitech.

Negative on this 500 for this 2.1 system is a joke.

    • Who cares what you think of the speakers themselves. This is a good price, so for anyone who actually wants to buy them, this is a bargain.

      • Let the ignorant remain ignorant, eh? Nice worldview.
