1490

Seven museums across WA will be free entry from December 15 to March 31, including WA Museum Boola Bardip.

The free museum initiative is part of a $1.1 million program that will run from December 15, 2024 until March 31, 2025 – and includes general admission to all museums run by the State Government’s Western Australian Museum organisation.

Alongside WA Museum Boola Bardip, other museums that will be free entry include the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle and Gwoonwardu Mia Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre, while the WA Shipwreck Museum, Museum of the Great Southern, Museum of Geraldton and Museum of the Goldfields will remain free to enter.

Maybe cut taxes instead if they've got money to burn, but anyhoo, Boola Bardip is rubbish but the maritime museums are great as is the Goldfields museum.

    • +22

What sort of tax cuts would you like the state government to implement instead, with $1.1 million?

        • +14

We'd each be paid $0.38…No idea how many of the population are non tax-payers but yeah, it's not going to be much coming back to you

    • +1

unsure I agree with the first bit, but appreciate the second sentence was looking for some opinions of which museums to visit first.

      • +1

I disagree with the second sentence, Boola Bardip is great. Massive improvement over its predecessor.

    • +8

Kind of a “tax cut” for those that take up the offer.

Allows those that wouldn’t otherwise have the means to visit the museum.

Great idea to help over the holiday period with things to do.

lol is that website really 'perthisok.com'
    hahah what a sentiment.

    • +9

Perth is pretty good at taking the piss out of itself 😉

      • +2

We're a bit mediocre at that too.

  • +6

Gotta be honest, as a museums member this is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

    edit:

To thank all our current WA Museum members, as of 14 December 2024, for their loyalty, we will automatically extend their membership for the equivalent time of free general admission (107 days to be precise!).

    • +2

Why? You're expecting more than you've "lost", for your pain and suffering?

      • I think the edit is that it's not as bad as they first thought

        • +2

Which actually shows that someone put some thought into this. A very positive surprise :-)

  • surprising that you needed to pay in NSW almost all museums are free

    • +2

Probably because NSW gets paid a lot of the nations GST

You’re a mining pit for and by China just like the east coast.

Sand groper attitude has been detected. When I visited for the first time last year, I couldn’t stand the mightier-than-thou attitude towards people from the east coast, constantly needing to state how much better WA is than everywhere else. Apparently manuka honey originates from WA… (lol!)

        • I moved to Perth in 2017 after living in Sydney 44 years. Its a bit like travelling, you need to experience it, to appreciate it because ctg is absolutely spot on.

        • No need to get upset, I actually don't have any attitude, what is said is a fact. That is your opinion and you're entitled to it.
From my experience travelling all over the world I feel lucky and proud to be Australian, any state vs state arguments seem petty on the whole (to me) because I feel we live in a great country.

For context I was born in NSW, have lived in QLD, VIC and currently in WA

  • Is it free for overseas visitors as well?

  • They should just make parking free, it'd be a better deal.

    • +1

Parking fees are a congestion management tool.

If the city was alive and kicking at the times the car parks have the free three hours, you wouldn’t have those free three hours.

Less cars on the road the better.

The parking right under the museum is free for 3 hours on the weekend…

      • +1

Or free street parking all Sunday

    • That's down to the local councils where each museum is. Perth has done free parking in the evenings and weekends for a while now.

WA Museum Boola Bardip is horrible with the way they've tried to wokify every possible exhibit.

Would instead have loved to have seen Perth go in a direction similar to Washington DC - either dedicated museums or spaces that celebrate the 3 major periods in each place's history: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial times, with each structured to highlight and celebrate the perspective it is dedicated to, whilst acknowledging the others but not being overridden by them.

As it is I could recommend the museum to no one.

As others have said the Goldfields and Maritime museums with greater focus and clarity with what they are about.. are great.

    • they've tried to wokify every possible exhibit

I totally misread that, thought you meant they were trying to cater to Asian tourists…

  • +1

I thought state museums were always free.

  • I saw a news article about the WA Museum, which is one of the top four most boring museums in the world.

    • +2

Didn't make it to top 4 but top 16 in this 2024 article:

Seven Australian attractions landed on the world’s 100 ‘most boring’ list – but are they all that bad?

Australia trailed behind the US and Canada with the third-highest number of attractions on the most boring list.

If it makes you feel any better, US attractions took up the top seven places and a total 62 of the 100 places mentioned. You can find out who made the top 100 most boring attractions list here and see the list of Australian attractions below:

      • 16 WA Museum Boola Bardip, Perth
      • 24 Legoland Discovery Centre, Melbourne
      • 32 Museum of Sydney
      • 52 Immigration Museum, Melbourne
      • 76 MONA, Hobart
      • 80 Luna Park, Melbourne
