  • In regards to C & D. Believed to be the Samsung N220, Optus has just thrown alot of them out the door. Suspect 'Catchoftheday' has picked up the old stock. They are still a stupidly good machine!

  • so basically your server will be down again, and you wont have enough to meet demand… :P

nah seems like they are up and these are still available.

    why from 199?

think you meant 299 and 399…

    • He isn't marked as a rep… Not his servers.

But yes, incorrect prices in title.

      • -2

opp yep, your right… just the way i read it cause of the cut and paste… replace your with there…you with they

        • +7

          *Their

  • Yeah just matched up the specs from the Samsung website
    http://www.samsung.com/sg/consumer/pc-peripherals-printer/no…

    N220 indeed!

  • +4

Dont forget - $5 free discount for spamming friends lol. Mob, Mob, Mob, …

      • +1

LOL. Samsung may be korean… doesn't mean all parts are made in Korea and all assembly is done in Korea.

As with all of COTD: if it wasn't crap they couldn't sell it cheaply.
And the few things that may be decent have got very limited stock (PS3 debacle anyone??)

        • +1

Whaddya expect it to be made in Germany or something? Look at the price… Can't please some people

      • Yeah. 'Cheap' Korean goods, I'm sure Samsung, LG, etc are all el cheapo brands to you eh?

Made In Korea isn't the mark of caution it once was, same as Made In Japan.

Idiots like you stereotype and believe no self-respecting Australian would buy anything with an Asian label on it (despite 99% of ALL gadget components coming from these 3 countries: Korea, China, Taiwan).

  • +3

If its a top brand why would they hide it when it should give a good bang for their buck.

  • +2

    A&B = NC10
    C&D = N220

  • -6

Difficult to use these netbooks with no optical device, but a cheap buy.

    • +8

Why is it diffcult to use these netbooks without optical device?

Do you mean more difficult than other Netbooks?

Netbooks tradionally do not come with optical drives anyway!

      • -5

        I did mean any netbooks…
And yes I do know that, and yes I think it would be a pain.

        • +1

okay no worries, using them for non work purposes they are excellent, most people hardly use cd or dvd unless setting it up ie one use

Maybe you should give one a go, and feel the freedom lol

        • It's not as big a pain as you might expect.

I use my desktop to rip/burn anything, they usually have better/faster optical drives than laptops do anyway.

I'd quite happily pull the optical drive out of my 'big' laptops in exchange for more battery life, and don't miss it at all on my netbooks. (Yes, plural).

    • +2

No it's not. Netbooks don't have optical drives and look how popular they are - people get along just fine without one. You haven't even owned one so I'm not sure what your point is.

    • Difficult to use these netbooks with no optical device,

How do you cope without a floppy drive or rs-232 port?

Who needs optical drives now? I do still use them for archival backups, but external hard drives are so cheap.

Or use an external optical drive that stays at home. Why add weight to a portable.

  • how does this compare to the OW $199 deal?

    • That what Im wondering.

    • OW is (sorta: cashback) $160
but as seen on COTD website, i think OP may have made a mistake where only $299 and $399 is sold not $199
only noticeable differences between OW and COTD, is battery, usb port, 3G, bluetooth, (bigger HDD on $399 one)

      • yeah the price is wrong in the title but it's right in the description

    • These are cheap is you need Bluetooth and a 3G modem built in.
Otherwise, the OW $199 deal is much better.

    • +3

and COTD’s netbook is basically the same as the eMachine for $160

yeah once you go to the em350 you cant go back; theres no better deal than a $160 acer netbook with win7

      • yeah i managed to grab the last one (apparently) @ Blacktown

gonna put win7 ultimate on it i think

  • only difference seem like the 3G slot and better battary. not sure about processor diff.
the OW has a cash back hence ($160). so it's almost double the price.

  • Who the hell would a mystery brand computer?

Google the dimensions to find the brand/model.

    • And why the hell would they hide it?

Anyone who buys a "mystery" thing has rocks in their head.

  • Any other netbooks with built-in 3G, or user-upgradeable via a readily available 3G card, for under $500 total?

    • If you can find them with a free PCI Express slot, you can add a 3G card into many of them. It takes some googling…

I recently got a Lenovo S10-3 from Orange IT for $315 (now they are $339). Read this thread for typical hassle in adding a card to a netbook… it's possible:

      http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/s10-3-3…

    • The telstra mobile wifi device for $129 at Aust Post?

    • So basically nothing out-of-the-box or with official no-hassle upgrade support? Think I'll give this deal a thumbs up then.

  • How do these cheap Notebooks PC compared with Tablets running Android?

  • +4

I reckon if this was available almost anywhere but COTD it would have a LOT more positive votes.

    • +1

I agree. They have been getting an unfair share of hate lately. Hopefully someday they will be back to give us freebies like condoms and lollies.

      • COTD does not help themselves by having virtually ZERO after sales support. I have written them three times to complain that my Seinheiser CX300 was delivered with the wrong socket (2.5mm instead of the regular 3.5mm) and not once have they replied. I really would think twice about buying off them anymore as its more a "Chance" thing than anything else and the discount you get is nothing more than insurance for warranty.
Free Lollies? My last batch of cheap Chuppas were Vietnamese imports of near expiry..
Rather the OW deal.. much better value for what you get and to top it off, you absolutely get a warranty with it for half the price of this rip off..

        • I know it's annoying but considered getting a 2.5mm to 3.5mm socket adapter?

  • +2

You people posting about the $199 ($160 after casg back) eMachine EM350 netbook from Officeworks do know that its sold outwith no more coming in at that price.

So this is a good alternative for those who missed out.

  • +1

COTD hide the brands to ensure compliance with the distributor and manufacturer as they don't want to be seen flogging off their brands cheaply thus possibly damaging their brand reputation. They pretty much put all of the specs info in there so any monkey with a brain (and google) can find out exactly what it is without too much hassle. They will only do it for the better brands ie Samsung.

    • +1

      No Google No Cry

  • +1

sorry for the wrong price :) according the review the n220 battery indeed last for 11-ish hours! impressive.
well, samsung has better built and quality over emachine, imho

  • Would the N270 (A/B) model be able to run Windows 7 like the N450

    • Yes - the "power" of the CPUs is basically the same. The difference is that the N270 has external graphics card, whilst N450 has integrated graphics.

The intgrated graphics means that the CPU has better control of power, and there are certain other economies - the bottom line is that the N450 gives significantly better batter life… but is no faster.

Either can run Windows 7 Starter with 1GB of RAM. The maximum is 2GB of RAM, so you really are better off staying with Win7 Starter rather than upgrade to Home Premium or Ultimate.

A 1.6GHz single-core processor with 2GB of RAM is not really able to cope with User Switching, which is the main thing that Win7 Starter disables. What that means is that to switch users you must log off (save the user settings to Hard Drive). If you tried User Switch (without logoff) in Win7 Ultimate on only 2GB of RAM, you will be waiting like 5 minutes while it thrashes the HDD to free enough RAM.

  • +2

Doesn't seem that great a deal. And Catch of the day as well, yikes.

  • Or.. you can pick up these dual core Atoms for $378: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/b2c/display/%28cpgsize=…

  • +2

Maybe a catch for CatchoftheDay itself but for this Atom superslow crap i think 150 dollars is the catch price.

Also not to mention CatchoftheDay pathetic customer service if you got a faulty product then God bless you….

  • The main selling point is the built in 3G which normally costs a fair bit extra. If the convenience of doing away with the 3G USB dongle is important to you, one of these may fit the bill. Out of the two types of system, the newer N450 is the better choice with its lower power consumption.

In general though, single core Atoms (N270/N450) are pretty lousy. I find my single core EEE Atom Netbook will freeze up for a few seconds each time it loads a web page, the browser steals all the CPU to render the page. I never get used to it.

I have a dual core D510 Atom server and its a lot better, it doesn't freeze up and multitasks better. Dual core plus hyperthreading (Windows thinks it has 4 cores) definitely makes a difference. If you don't need 3G built in consider something like what AlexF suggested with the N550 chip.

    • find my single core EEE Atom Netbook will freeze up for a few seconds each time it loads a web page, the browser steals all the CPU to render the page.

What browser are you using, what antivirus, and what web pages? It sounds like something is VERY wrong with your setup! Are you running AVG antivirus? A lot of people rush out to install AVG on everything but don't realise badly chosen antivirus software can slow your system to a crawl. AVG works fine on multi-core CPUs but not on single from my experience. Do a search for AVG Antivirus Performance, you'll find a lot of hits. You may be running something else but I know some versions of Norton and Avast have the same problems.

Running Avira on my Netbook, web pages load much faster on a 1.66Ghz Atom than they do on a 2.2Ghz single-core desktop with AVG. There's no noticeable performance hit turning the AV on or off with Avira, but with AVG things feel sluggish, and turning off AVG scanning makes the computer feel new again. It would be worth experimenting with your setup, because installing tools that are best for desktop CPUs may be crippling your netbook.

You might also be wise to install Adblock Plus, it will cut out all the garbage Flash ads that could be slowing things down. Flash performance gets worse with every new 'update', even on a fast quad-core desktop machine opening up just a few flash-intensive web pages slows things down unless you disable the Flash ads.

Here's just one website showing how much antivirus software can impact performance. Some popular antivirus software slows file copies more than 50% - imagine buying a new 4Ghz computer and then installing a slower antivirus program, and literally having the brand new faster computer run slower with every-day tasks than their old 2.5Ghz computer. That's what many people are doing every day without realising it! On a netbook you'll definitely notice if something takes twice as long. Worth a look!

        • Thanks for the info. I'm running Firefox, Adblock Plus and not using AV on it. When I say freeze, the pointer still moves so interrupts are still being serviced, not completely frozen.

I think it's just slow. The delays vary according to page complexity and clock speed.

I'll keep what you've said in mind. :)

  • This is not a great deal. I bought a HP Netbook just before Christmas with the same specs as the $399 model, only I paid $300. Just shop around online or at any computer store and you're bound to find a better deal.

  • hi all i missed out would like to buy this "laptop A - pink" if anyone has bought one and doesnt want it and can you please contact thnx

    email: jykl91 @ gmail.com thx

  • -2

Didn't realise everyone else was feeling jipped with COTD. They suck!

    • +1

      Thanks for that….very informative…

  • Why are we still bothering with netbooks? AMD just launched Fusion and HP is carrying a cool DM1, retailing for USD$450. That, my friends, is the ideal budget ultraportable. Alternately, anyone up for some Honeycomb love?

    • 14 hour battery life reported with some :) (Insert big cheesy Jeremy Clarkson grin)
