It ain't Voda's network having repeated issues and outages… ahem, Telstra..

        • Hehe.. you're right, but I think the topics are vastly different.
One being 'the network won't cope', and the other being 'a service outage'.

  • +3

40GB is huge for mobile use remember. Im a heavy user and i hit maybe 28-30 a month. If you get this as a replacement for internet you are doing it wrong, wait till real unlimited is released.

    • exactly 40Gb is (profanity) massive for mobile data idk how people would even come close to that, are they watching 4k netflix at work or something lol

      • -1

son watches you tube to and from school and when we travelling in the car ….. also he has so many games doing push notifications ….. but we have't hit 30Gb on out 60 GB plan.

        • +1

Push notifications are a few bytes of text.

          Videos will do it.

    • +4

"28-30 a month" is not a heavy user.

      • +5

I'd say that's a lot of mobile data for someone who also has a home internet connection.

        • +1

For a lot of people this would do as their only internet connection.

Not for me, we are around 300GB on average, but I suspect a lot of people would not even hit 20 GB, let alone 40.

      • For mobile it is. Most plans out there won't provide that much let alone see consumers using it. Most people probably aren't streaming a lot of netflix etc over mobile to hit those sorts of limits and things like iOS will limit how large an app or OS updates you can pull over cellular.

For home broadband no, it'd be relatively small.

  • Question guy's if i go to this plan will I be able to keep my $5 Data Sims

  • +1

$49 bucks for 40gbs and i'll bite till then il live on 15gb like a peasant

  • +1

I'm surprised they're not going back to the dark ages and slowing it to 256kbps when throttling required.

    • was still better than dialup.

  • I got like 200gb from Optus iPhone X promo (which they have yet to apply onto my account the additional 100gb bonus data) and I’m only doing 30gb a month! I’m going to start tethering my phone soon to fully utilized the extra data lol!

    • Optus cap your tether speeds but it's still okay just not as fast as directly on your handset

      • any reference? cap to what speed?

      • +1

are you sure about that? i do feel my hot spot is slower than my actual iphone speed at work. at work i use my iphone as hot spot for a windows 7 pc using a lightning cable.

but i just did a test at home. iphone speed 29/11. then it became a hot spot for my ipad and the speed was 22/10. not much difference.

    • we got 60Gb on double data ….. and haven't hit the limit…..
except for xbox updates or games which are often 15GB for patch, and 30-50GB for a new game install update if we were on 200GB I'd ditech our home broadband.

but do remember, the 200GB is upload and download, not just download.

  • Is Apple Music streaming still unlimited on this plan, I wonder? I couldn’t see it mentioned.

    • +1

I used to worry about that. It’s about 150mb an hour it seems. So, probably not a worry even if it was now metered.

      • It should be caching or you can download things if you want to repeat listen as well.

    • +1

Still unlimited. Just switched to the plan.

  • Our family pool 3x 20GB Plans with Telstra at the moment. Would be cool to pool 4x 40GB with the unlimited deal but we locked in a family and friends S8 deal last year. :-(

    • I don't think this plan pools data, but happy to be corrected?

      • I think you are right

    • Can not pool data

      • Correct. Cannot pool data unfortunately.

  • What effect, if any, do you reckon this will have on the prices of the existing 12 month byo plans? I'm out of contract in a week and looking to move to a byo plan. Kinda seems like they all might get cheaper or include more data for the same price. Thoughts?

    • +1

a week to go they will contract you now to make sure you don't jump ship.
they might do more data rather than drop prices, costs nothing to offer more data at existing prices but they don't want people moving to lower cost plans.

      • Yeah i can recontract now but i might as well wait 2 days for this deal or for the existing deals to change in price or inclusions.

    • +1

It’s Telstra - they’re not likely to drop prices. Might be more likely to include more data.

  • Can this share data with existing Telstra mobile plan ?

    • No

      • How do you know? It doesn't say anything about that in the article…

        • I'd assume not as it'd make any pooled plan that had a finite cap unlimited effectively. People would add super low end plans in conjunction with this one for unlimited access. Would be nice to be proven wrong mind you.

    • Nope. Unfortunately.

  • Optus have their unlimited data, it's $70 pm but throttles streaming e.g Netflix to 1.5mbits, not sure if they throttle non-streaming services eg download patches or backup to cloud.

they are all heading to the US model, unlimited data (reasonable use then throttles) , unlimited calls.

  • +3

Everybody thinking it's 1.5 "megabytes".. it is not.
It is 1.5 "megabits" meaning just under 200kbps, which is agonizingly slow.
    Don't be mislead

    • ahh 1.5mbits speed, not throughput, but wireless has overheads, forgot all about that.

    • +7

Good to point out that however you dice it, it's still sluggish once you hit that data cap, but your units are getting slightly mixed up.

You are correct that it's 1.5 megabits per second, however, that means 1500kbps. Given there are 8 bits in a byte, you mean it's equivalent to just under 200KBps (kilobytes per second). Lowercase kbps generally means kilobits rather than kilobytes.

      • +2

I wish terminology for down/up speeds was just in one unit of speed. So many people get sucked into bytes and bits =(

    • +1

I think that's why they are calling this "Endless Data" rather than "Unlimited".

To save getting whacked from the ACCC.

  • Essentially $59 per month with $10 credit.

    • +7

From where do you get a $10 credit ?

  • Does anyone know if this will work fine in the nighthawk router they have

Also be interested if you can share data with another sim

    • only works in mobile phones. first 40gb tethered is uncapped speeds. slowed after that

    • It should work fine in a nighthawk :)

      • Will not work in a nighthawk

  • +2

Currently paying $39.00 for 20GB [Telstra]. Al though I would love the freedom of an extra 20GB I just can't justify bumping an extra $30 what something I would maybe use 1-2 of the 12 months :(

    • It’s still better paying an extra $30/mo than accidentally going over and having to fork out $10/gb… such a rip off!

  • Is this 40gb per month, or for the life of the plan?

    • Per month

    • +3

Lol. It's for the life of a one month plan.

  • +1

This isn't much of a deal considering I pay $88 a month for 76GB of data and a Note 8 with Telstra.

    • +1

      how do you get that?

    • Please elaborate.

  • +1

Wow, amazing deal. Half the world has real unlimited data and here people get hysterical over a halfass unlimited deal.

    • I read this type of comment all the time, us it actually true though? And is it 4G, or just some overloaded network where real speeds are on par with adsl2

      • In America you can get unlimited 4g but then once you hit your data limit you are slowed to 3g speeds (just like this deal?)

        • Any other countries?

Do they get full 4g speeds? Telstra 4g+ speeds are pretty amazing, i.e over 100mbps

  • +2

Vivid wireless slows you down to 256kbps once data allowance is used and It makes the internet unusable.

  • anyone know if we can get share data sim's with this deal?

  • +2

No international calls, no deal for me

    • Check out the Voda one then. They're cheaper, includes International calls and you can get the $5 days.

  • why telstra is so keen on not giving any internatioal mins even for a medium priced plan? are they worried that if they do, they are gonna drive other telcos out of business so telstra will be investigated for monopoly?

  • On a technical level does anyone know if they can even cap speeds?
A year ago this was impossible. Business TMCS plans were supposedly capped at 256kbps after 3Gb (but never were!).

    • +2

Yes its possible, but only for consumer customers as the data platform is different (Doesn't use ONDB like legacy business products do)

  • Does anyone know if the BYO sim-only plans are eligible for Telstra One Number service to use with Apple Watch? Someone said it has to be a plan with a phone, but it doesn't really say on their website.

  • +4

This is a BIG day for Australian broadband.

Not since TPG came out with their $60 a month unlimited ADSL2+, have I seen such a bold change to the market.

1.5Mbps may not be much, but it's enough to stream anything. These plans are 24/7 keys to the video internet from almost anywhere in Australia. It's kind of beautiful.

    • -1

not exactly the same. TPG's $60 is full speed unlimited while these mobile plans have a capped speed of 1.5Mpbs.

I am not sure if you noticed. long before TPG's $60, they used to have 128kbps and 4Mbps capped speeds ADSL2+ plans.

    • it's enough to stream anything

Spotify, Radio and SD Youtube and netflix. SD media isnt enjoyable except on a phone or tablet.

      • If you're patient, you can buffer HD youtube while you take a dump, and purchase + download HD videos while you cook dinner, ready to watch after.

        • +1

Buffering YouTube isn't a thing ever since they switched to using the DASH protocol. It buffers a small amount of play buffer then stops, it won't load the whole video.

Spotify, Radio and SD Youtube and netflix. SD media isnt enjoyable except on a phone or tablet.

Yeah and this is a SIM card so you put it inside a phone/tablet. Perfect.

  • Telstra is now a whopping $189 a month for the XXL plan and 256GB iPhone X on lease plan. An increase of $40 a month for when I preordered it! Telstra just gets more and more expensive to the point that the $199 seems worth it in comparison!!

  • Those cheeky monkeys, called me last week trying to offer me $79 byo with 20 gbs for 12 months

    • Lol there is still ads running for a leased Pixel 2 XL for $99 per month.. when there is a deal for $59 per month to own it.

      They're sneaky.

  • Currently awaiting adsl2+ connection.
Has taken ridiculously long amount of time.
Had to send a copy of the lease agreement to disconnect existing service which previous tenant had active.
Now another two weeks until connection date.
Only at my current address until December…considering this as a replacement for home internet. Live alone, watch YouTube, currently hotspot with phone to laptop and tv successfully.
    Suggestions please?
I know it hasn’t launched yet, any ideas if this will be attainable from JB for a voucher?

  • +2

Take this with a grain of salt.
I spoke with Telstra online chat. The data is available for shared devices as per normal including 1.5mps capped speed per device. That’s a thumbs up from me if true.

    • -2

How many shared devices can you have?
Do you pay a fee per device?

This might be the month I cancel my ADSL

    • +1

Incorrect. Data unavailable to be shared between devices. Spoke to telstra rep in store, it’s on the website in the fine print.

    • Can not share data

  • Any idea about getting a porting voucher from JB?

    • Does not come with JB gift voucher

  • Apparently it's available from today. Anyone signed up?.

  • Can you get a new service with Telstra, the Samsung S9 plan for example and then upgrade to this plan?

  • I want to use this sim with a 4G modem but they state:

The Endless Data BYO plan is for personal use in a smartphone only.

Do you think I'll have any issues?

    • +1

No you won't since it's not real unlimited

    • That would be very interesting if one sim doesn't work in a phone or modem. I had tried both before, only could not make/receive calls on the phone, when used a modem sim from Optus.
The same issue solved by Vodafone when asked them to open up my broadband sim in a phone. Have no experience with Telstra but don't think the sim would know if it is in a modem or phone.
      Let us know, please.

By the way, it is interesting that people use 4G modem instead of a cheap 4G phone as modems, they are about the same price. I have 4 old 4G phones that I use as multitasking hotspots (photo frame/camera/weather station/time teller/notifiers/Gaming/Streaming/Music player/…) and a 4G modem that I never use.

  • +1

Jumped on this 2 day# ago as I did not risk waiting any longer the offer being pulled due to accc action etc. But I have a problem porting from woolworths mobile. They have done everything they can to stop me moving, incl giving me wrong account number needed for porting, giving me wrong payout figure (higher than actual to scare me), and max delays. As a result I still am not activated. They are total b***ds.

  • Re use "against terms", I was told at telstra shop that the sim DOES WORK in a broadband modem, but there is a HIGH RISK data access would be barred, (but not 100% this would happen). Telstra DO know what device the sim is in. If you are barred, then you will get the option to move to another plan with fixed data, e.g. $49 for 15GB or $59 for 25GB data. Also re tethering as hotspot, was told you will get 100% bandwith slightly lower than max due to overheads, for first 40GB then shaped as normal. Just my 2c worth.

    • Not true. I have been using mine in a broadband modem and mobile at the same time even after the speed got shaped. 1.5mbps is still manageable. Netflix streams 720p believe it or not, HD streams are buffer-free on apps like Moviebox and Terrarium. You can also easily spoof your device ID if its rooted or jailbroken so Telstra will never know you are sharing between devices.

  • So how have people gone on this plan? Worth it? Been able to use it as an ADSL replacement etc? Keen to know how it went.

    • Unfortunately this plan didn't last long, is already been nobbled back to 30gb for the same price of $69
