So after creating a series of home appliances to spy on us, like the Xiaomi Dafang IP Camera, the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum Cleaner to check what we hide underneath the sofa, the Xiaomi Air Purifier to check our air level to pollute later. Then there are Xiaomi Smart Home Security Kits and Xiaomi Gateway to link other Xiaomi-compatible devices to store our personal data, the Xiaomi 70 Minutes Car DVR to spy while we drive… (you get the idea), might as well just invite them into our home with the Xiaomi Smart Door Lock!

Jokes aside (or not), this is a 4 in 1 door lock, so you have:

  • Fingerprint Unlock
  • Password Unlock (touch)
  • Proximity Card Unlock (NFC style?)
  • Key Unlock (retrieve under the front door mat)

Expedited Express (3 - 7 business days) is on offer but do expect a bit of lead time for processing as per usual. Once shipped, it gets to Australia pretty quick.

Is this is $100 more then back in Jan https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355496

    • Good pickup. That was when Gearbest was issuing discount codes for every request as part of a under-cost promotion. I checked with Gearbest rep, they can't repeat those prices due to new policy.

  • -3

At $155 it is a deal!

  • Using this atm, gd buy, make sure u install this with professional which will cost around $200+. Only thing that scares me is there is a usb post outside where u can insert manual key in emmergency. Not sure what it is used for 🤔

    • +3

      I can't find the professional version :/

    • +1

Um…$450+ all up, what about the door itself?

    • +2

I thought it's battery-powered? If so, why pay for professional installation man.

      • +1

They're referring to the physcial door installation, not the wiring (or lack of) of the lock itself.

        • +1

That's what I mean, if hardwiring is needed then an electrician should be called out. It's not hard to install the actual door lock.

        • +3

They're referring to the physical door installation

Where in hopper's comment does he say that?

        • @WatchNerd:

Well it doesn't, but I don't think they needed to, because there's no other factor of the installation.

  • rubbish deal, was cheaper previously!

  • Don't know how hard to install it.

    • +1

Look on the bright side, it will be easier to hack it

      • Can you ?

        • +1

Can you? Can someone else? Your neighbour, the kids that marauding in the street? The next addict looking at your house? Who is your adversary, today and during the product's lifespan?

Given the statistics on hacking locks to date, there is a 100% chance it can be opened.

But like all security devices, the question is how easy it is to attack, who can succeed at it, and how long will it take. The person that designs it needs to be smarter than all those that will want to break it, by many orders of magnitude. And the physical design is only one vector to consider. Who designed the physical lock? Can a magnet influence it? Vibrations? Drill a hole and insert a lever in a certain place? A piece of sticky tape… even a square of sandpaper(!) Etcetera.

But more to the point, who wrote the software for it? How? Is the NFC interface attack-able? Any other interfaces, Wi-Fi? With these, often the authentication can be attacked, or the device abused. The radio communications themselves are easy to monitor and replay, allowing modifications to be tried multiple times until they have an effect. If you had an adversary willing to buy one to figure out a method that works, they'd not even need to see your house beforehand and could enable their a local partner who will do the dirty work. But in most cases, downloading the firmware will allow them to discover something they can leverage.

Hopefully, the team that write the software for smart toilets and webcams were nowhere near this, and some professionals were employed… LOL!

        • @resisting the urge: i pretty sure the team who wrote the software is better than some keyboard typers. if you can hack one of them, prove it.

        • zigbee is pretty easy to hack

        • @coolbzk: So I should waste my time for your enjoyment? You knock yourself out before all the others do, I've no need to even try hacking cheap doorlocks from such manufacturers.

        • @resisting the urge: any cases happened to mi door looker? i mean lock someone out of door? technically any system can be hacked in some way, the difference is how hard it is. without any substantial evidence, i wont believe mi is easy to hack.

        • @coolbzk: What makes it different from any other lock? Many things make it worse. I explained why before(!) Interfaces have bugs, the more interfaces, added complexity and all you get is more bugs/vulnerabilites. Loads of evidence out there, just take a look at all the radio-interface hacks, digital lock hacks, let alone how easy it is to defeat our existing locks.

But keep thinking as you do, that's how all these cheaply made products succeed: Key ingredients are "unbreakable tech", cheap design, development, production and dollops of consumer optimism/blind faith!

OTOH, if you have one, take it apart and study the mechanism. Start thinking like your adversary. Start by imagining how the device will break if smashed in various ways, what will be exposed and might allow it to be opened. Does all the casing need to be removed? What tools will do it best? Then your opinion will count some, until someone proves you wrong. And they will. That's how it goes.

It might help if you start with the knowledge that failure state is for electronic locks to open, because it won't meet fire regulations without doing that.

    • English manual my arse.

  • +1

    That description 😂

  • +1

If anyone who is bit frugal, can buy this for a few lesser dollars. $223 without delivery charges.

    https://m.gearbest.com/access-control/pp_1142172.html

It doesn't matter which way the description say the lock opens left hand or right hand side, orientation changed easily.

And if you need a good locksmith who is reliable and had installed more than 5 aqara locks in Melbourne, Pls pm me.

    Cheers

    • I'm not seeing the $223 price, it's $432 for me?

      • By any chance are you selecting open on left option rather than the open on right option which shows when you click the linked pasted in my previous comment?!

    • The Samsung allowed the handle to be used either way. Are you sure the same applies here? Why do they bother selling them as separate items?

      • +1

It is possible to change the handing on these locks. Not the easiest, but can definitely be done.

  • +1

So what 8 batteries does it use and how long do they last?

    • +1

and…hugely important IMHO….how does it behave when the batteries go flat and is there a low battery warning (and no I didn't go looking as no interest in the product - yeah lazy - but thought I'd post on what seemed to me obvious detail that should be given - if not already on site)

      • I'm sure it will alert via the Mi home app like all the other products

        • +7

The Chinese communist party walks into your house and changes your batteries for free the first time.

        • @Risto: They move in the second time.

        • And you don't have to be home, as they will know it when you leave and back home or office where ever you install. :)

      • The Samsung ones have battery terminals underneath that allow a 9V battery to give a temporary charge (if I recall correctly). I would hope Xiaomi copied Samsung well enough.

        • Or short out unit totally if someone wanted to be a pain with say jumper leads

        • @asa79: valid

    • +1

      I heard of it's about 8 month ~ 1 year from somewhere.
And yes, there is a micro usb port next to keyhole. You can power the smart lock with a battery bank if battery goes flat.

  • +3

Found a installation in Chinese. At least you can get the idea how it is installed.

    https://v.qq.com/x/page/k0509xzhi1e.html

  • +1

I bought this when it was last on sale. Yet to install it so can't comment on functionality. But this is a serious piece of hardware, heavy, great materials. Really expensive looking/feeling.

I didn't expect this as the Samsung lock I have is cheap and plastic.

    • +1

Well anything they make is loaded with Lead so that's probably why :P

      (j/k ofcourse)

    • +1

Yup is it good value for money.

Once you've got it installed and don't get a cowboy locksmith like we did, this works like a charm.

Have had 3 mates ordering it around 300 Aud mark last month. Childlock is great and the materials used are top notch

  • I wonder how easy/hard these things are to hack to unlock/lock at will. Would make a fun practical joke. Mess with 1 of friends by locking it every time just before they open. Then when they give up, make it seem like its going haywire locking and unlocking repeatedly so as they can hear it moving once they have given up trying to get out. Lol. Hidden camera to upload online also.

  • So can someone open my main door from china?

    • +2

Yes, this lock gives a backdoor access to your front door.

      • and maybe even backdoor access to your back door too

        • +1

You just can't resist the urge, can you :)

        • @sky blu: Sometimes, no. Maybe the wind just takes me, or maybe it's just all the hot air around security products that should never see the light of day. And should be left alone right at the end of a very long, dark tunnel.

  • +2

I litterally just googled and found a better price on gearbest for $169.99

    • Link please. looking to get one.

      • +1

Sorry just to clarify it's 169.99 USD not AUD. Google "Xiaomi Aqara WiFi Fingerprint Smart Door Lock ($169.99) Coupon Price" then click on the first link, in the article there is a gearbest link with "Email price" of 169.99 USD.

        • why open on the left is always more expensive, want one at $169.99 usd.

        • @kenshin: The handing can be changed before installation. They just offer either one to make it easier, but not necessarily cheaper.

  • +1

Not sure if this price will be available when they actually have stock - https://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Aqara-Smart-Door-Lock-p-1212…

    • it's a great price.

    • its been like that from last 3 months. Checking after every month.

      • On live-chat they told me ETA 2-3 weeks

  • Anyone know how to get the English voice on this? One guy on Youtube shows a method but it does not work for me.
