[VIC] ULP95 Petrol at The Price of ULP91 ($1.317/L) Due to Faulty ULP91 Pump at 7-Eleven Hampton Park

Just left 7-Eleven Hampton Park petrol station (14/4 9:00PM). There is note posted at the pump that they are selling ULP 95 at the price of ULP 91. This is because the ULP 91 pumps are not working at the moment. Price is $1.3170. But be quick as they are only selling ULP 95 at this price because ULP 91 pumps are not working. Pumps might get fixed soon.

This is at the corner of Pound and Shrives Road at Hampton Park, VIC

Note: It's not a glitch on their system. Staff is aware of the problem. They've put a note on the pump telling customers that there is a problem with ULP91 pump.

      Staff is aware. They posted a note on the pump saying that since ULP91 is not working they are selling ULP95 at price of ULP91. Hope this clarifies that it's not a glitch. I will update my post.

      Umm… 95 will go in a modern 91 fine.

        The manufacturer of my car said to specifically use 91.

          Probably just to save you money, because in some cars there's no benefit to using the higher octane fuels

      • But why would I want to put 95 in a 91 car? It'd be like feeding a dog sirloin steak.

          Last time when u98 was being sold at u91 price, I pumped the whole tank into my Korean SUV. LITERALLY no benefit. I'm no engineer but I think it just burns richer. Burning rich —> more soot —> worse for the cat??? I'm not sure. But I won't be queueing to get higher grade octane.

        • @nurries: I couldn't feel any changes in power either. Well, my car is a Korean SUV so the engine and drivetrain is extremely tame (boring). It's like giving sloth redbull to squeeze out some form of energetic behaviour. Waste of time really.

          Can you find u95/98 at consistently equal price to u91? If not, you will be just like me. One tank wonder. If you can, please teach ozbargain how.

          Nope, but 98 fuel is cleaner than 91 so I'm more than happy for a one tank wonder. Especially if it's the same price as 91.

          There would be no point in giving a dog steak just one time, as opposed to feeding it that every day. Similarly, filling up with 95 just once is pointless, even if it is the same price. If your local servo was offering it, that'd be one thing, but to go out of your way for it?

      What car do you have that specifies 98 octane fuel? Most cars that require 98 will run fine on 95, the computer will just adjust the timing and you "may" lose a few kW of power but it would not be noticeable.

      • My 15yo Merc doesn't, tried 95 when moved to Tas as Coles/Shell don't do 98 octane down here… The car got cranky as hell, all sorts of problems. Switching back to 98 (Vortex) it all went away.

        • Unless your Merc is a high performance AMG model, you would not need to run 98 fuel. You may have just got a bad batch of fuel?

        • @billy_bob: not an AMG, used 95 for a month or so and got weird cold start issues and acceleration / gear shift was way off. Moving back to 98 all that went away.

      • Yeah my 2004 Forestor i was using 98. Switched to 95 recently hopefully no issues

      • Ford Mustang. It's odd, because the Maserati GranTurismo has a similar N/A V8, like the Mustang, only more power, yet only requires 95. Go figure.

          Good choice, I have a Mustang GT too, and I happen to be an engineer at Ford ;) The 5.0 Coyote engine is pretty high tech these days and definitely performs best on 98 fuel. However, it will pretty much run on any fuel, even E10, as you can see on the fuel cap. The factory power and economy figures are based on using 98 fuel, so if you run anything less, it will still run fine, but the timing will be retarded (to protect from detonation) and this means reduced power and worse fuel economy.
          I am guessing you bought the Mustang to enjoy the performance it offers, so IMHO it is not worth trying to save a couple of hundred bucks a year by skimping on the fuel.

          Yup I agree, 98 on any performance car.

          I bet the same people who use 91 fuel when their car recommends 95 are the same people who install Achilles or Linglong Tyres on their Porsche Cayenne or X5 M Sport.

          Off Topic, is there much of an engineering department left at Ford Aust?

          @JB1: Yes, our Engineering department has actually grown to about 1500 people since the Broadmeadows factory closed. We also have a very good graduate program for young graduate engineers looking to get a start in automotive engineering. We also have our Sales and Marketing team of a few hundred people based at our Richmond office, near IKEA.

          However it doesn't really make sense does it. Manufacturer who designed and built cars in Australia ceases local production, now purely an importer of cars but grows engineering department.

          No wonder the local cars were rubbish when they were designed and built here (apart from the Barra straight 6).

        • @JB1: Umm, I don't think the local cars were rubbish, the Falcon and Territory were both great family cars which were actually fun to drive. We are now mainly working on the Ranger and Everest, which are built in Thailand, but designed here in Melbourne. Most of the testing is also done here at our testing facilities in Geelong and Lara. The reason we need more engineers now is that Ranger/Everest is a global platform that is sold all over the world (both LH and RH drive), so the model complexity is much greater than we had for Falcon/Territory which were only made for sale in Australia (and minor exports to New Zealand and Thailand).

    Just wondering who is going the bear the price difference. 7-11? Mobil? Or the store owner?
    If it's the owner, i don't think it is ethical to take advantage of it…
