    Just ordered. Thankd

  • Damnit my previous sale echo for 119 arrived yesterday. :(

    • +2

Oh hey I emailed them cheekily to ask if they'd refund the difference and they did. Nice.

I personally prefer the Google assistant

I personally prefer Chromecast Audio into a nice set of speakers.

(and then would use Google Home to cast to it)

    • +1

just download and enable it on your android phone, one less piece of junk cluttering up your home

      I personally prefer bikies

does anyone find these useful after about 30 days when the novelty wears off?

    • +8

Can't speak for the Echo but I use my Google Home a ton.

Lights, controlling Logitech Harmony (TV & Entertainment Unit), checking the weather, converting measurements when I'm cooking, setting timers, playing the radio - I actually use it far more than I thought I would.

      • ok good to hear - I dont have one yet - the radio could definitely be useful though

      • +3

They are fantastic in the kitchen.

Having multiple cooking timers is useful, but multiple NAMED timers are a godsend if you have a bunch of them going at once. "set a pasta timer for 10 minutes" — "beep boop boop beep beep - Your pasta's done."

Also the shopping list is great because you just yell it out while you're rummaging through the cupboard, or using up the last of something. Then you just use the app to tick things off while you're in Woolies.

        • which one are you using?
Also can you do shopping lists for different people? e.g. so I could make one and it would make a different one for my flatmate?
          anyway sounds good thanks!

        • +1

@Geoff-bargain: I have a Google Home and two Home Minis, there's three people in my house and all can have separate shopping lists. You can also share lists with other users as long as you know their email address (no, you can't do this with a voice command - which is a bit silly)

I just have an Echo Dot with the audio Bluetoothed to a decent speaker.

I have no idea about multiple shopping lists since we all just use one list, but for multi-user in general I think Google is further along.

The reason I picked Alexa is that I feel stupid saying OK Google

      • Agree with my Google Home Mini that came with my Pixel 2 XL, thought it was just a silly novelty, but has turned out really useful. Kind of like a clock radio for the 21st century, in a sense.

If you ever finding your self googling in your phone to find something out, then yes it is useful

Multi room Spotify across my whole house for less than the price of one Sonos speaker. Everything else it does is just gravy on top.

      • which do you have?

        • +1

2 dots, an echo Gen 1, and just got an echo Gen 2. The dots are attached to Logitech speakers that I had lying around anyway. One dot in the bedroom and one at my painting desk. Echo Gen 1 is now in the bathroom and the Gen 2 in the dining room.

    • Nope. As part of HA (Home Automation) it's awesome.
Great to just ask it some quick questions instead of searching via phone / PC.

    • +1

yes, i have 5 Dots in the house and use them lots.
Controlling my lights, setting timers, playing the radio, playing spotify [can play to all Dots/Echos in the house at once if you want], using it as an intercom between rooms - that's the main stuff. There's also 1000's of skills (apps) for it that do a million things but ive been too lazy to investigate further.

    Echo Dot $59 at Officeworks.
great toy for a few hours then it is like a women, just asks for money all the time

    • Just going by the OfficeWorks website, it says $78 if you click the "shop echo dot" button on this page: https://www.officeworks.com.au/campaigns/amazon-echo ; So I'm assuming that you're price matching? But I'm also assuming the Amazon price is delivered, whereas the officeworks one we have to go get?

    • +3

      Hmm, trashy.

Also, Echo never asks for money.

  • So I got one but the only I've got to work is the Phillips hue light is off and on. Alot of things(skills) you need to enable are region locked. Anyone know where i get more pointers on some more automation and pointers. I also got the dimmer switch it only turns the light on but doesn't turn it off.

    • You need the Philips Hue skill; it's available in Australia. I've got Hues in multiple rooms with multiple Echoes and everything works fine. I can turn lights on and off (and have it set up to recognise which room I'm in based on which Echo device hears me so it can adjust the appropriate lights - do this in Smart Home > Groups in the Alexa app), dim/brighten them, change colours, set scenes. My dimmer and tap switches also work fine. So it's definitely not a problem with things not working in the Australia region (I'm using an Australian Echo with an Australian account).

I basically just followed Amazon's and Philip's instructions. Set things up in the Smart Home section of the Alexa app (found in the hamburger menu in the top left corner) after getting everything set up in the Hue app.

      • DO you have the echo plus or just the normal echo. Echo plus has hub built in but the only thing is i can't use the Phillips app

        • I have a regular Echo and a couple of Echo Dots. I decided against the Echo Plus as apparently the inbuilt zigbee hub affords only very basic functionality with Philips Hue lights. It also won't work with the Hue app and you don't need the Hue skill (which probably also won't work) with the Echo Plus hub. In order to use them properly, you need the Hue hub.

I also have the dimmer switch, but I've just set that up via the Hue hub and app.

Unfortunately, you're going to need the hub to get full functionality from your lights.

  • From my experience the Echo Dot's speakers are much worse than the Google Home Mini's. Google also integrates a lot better with the Google ecosystem if you like that.

  • Run a home with Echo + LIFX + Xiaomi Yeelights + Ecobee thermostat. Love it. Anyone know what new zigbee devices are cheap and useful with the plus?

    • Does the Echo support ZigBee natively? Or you need a separate hub?

      • Only the echo plus supports signee. Even so I’m not sure what actual products it can support. I’m not familiar with the zigbwe world

    • Is it easy to set up the different brand bulbs? I have ordered some lifts but I was considering the Yeelights for my kid's bedrooms. Do they work together for example if I say turn on all lights will it recognize all bulbs regardless of brand? I don't want to have to faff around with a whole bunch of different apps. I have the echo plus.

      • Yes you can set them up in the same group on Alexa, but probably aren’t limited to simple functions like on, off, brightness 70%. Colours might be a bit hard, but I haven’t tried yet cos I only have Yeelight colour bulbs, and my LIFX colour bulbs haven’t mixed with yeelight.

        • so do you have your yees and LIFX's in different groups?

I was thinking i might do something similar, use the couloured LIFX's in the main living areas and the yeelights in the isolated areas such as bedrooms. Its not as if you really use all the bedrooms together.

  • Love Google home, Schwinn cheap smart products hmmm now that I would like to see..

    • RM Mini 3 is cheap as chips and works awesome with Google Home. Super super useful.

      • I have ordered one 22 feb and still waiting for it to arrive, I doubt I will be buying for Zapals again.

  • Is this the one I can call Alex?

I'm not sure how but I placed an order for the echo plus, with the Hue light bulb and it turned out to be $141.80 … win ?

    Order Summary
    Item(s) Subtotal: $235.41
    Delivery: $7.27
    Total Before GST: $242.68
    GST: $24.26
    Total: $266.94
    Promotion(s) Applied: -$125.14
    Grand Total: $141.80

    *Edit
I remember that when I checked out 2 phillip hue light bulbs was under the discounts list and if I add 141.80 + 29.95 it adds up to $171.75.

    • +1

Nice, it appears the tickbox on the echo plus order page to add the lightbulb doubles up the discount (it prompts you again to pick one when you add the echo plus to the cart). Although unfortunately there's no way to checkout and get the $141.80 price if you need a screw in bulb (tickbox only adds the bayonet).

      • Any specific instruction on how to make this work? ….been trying to do this but couldn't seem to get the double discounts.

Would this double discount show up in the order summary at the check out or does it show after the order is placed?

      • I take it this doesn't work anymore?

  • Good timing.. was looking to buy either Amazon Echo or Google Home. This made the decision for me.

  • Wish they had a deal on Kindle Paperwhite too ?
