I purchased this ages ago, great software if you run a server.

    • Same version too…

      Don't they do updates?

      • After install check for updates. It takes it to version 5.20 (from 5.01)

        • Thanks… Worked for me too…

        • +4

          then it becomes unregistered

        • This broke the registration for me, do you have a fix for that?

        • +1

I guess you then realised that the program now became unregistered.

        • +1

          @czking:

          then it becomes unregistered

I just re-entered my registration code from last time and now it's fine again…

          @jv:
Where do we find this code?

        • @Draxxx:

It was emailed to me from the last deal.

        • @jv: Oh. Ok. Cheers.

        • @jv:

Can you tell me which specific deal? I'd like to check my email to see if I ever got a code, or just these no-upgrade trials.

        • @syousef:

          One from last year

      • cool

  • Nice post, useful tool. I don't think this version will update (just like the last time), but still def worth it to have :)

Real download link without the PUP installer:

    http://downloads.sharewareonsale.com/files/SharewareOnSale_G…

    • Cheers added to post.

      • If the SoS installer doesn't have access to the internet, (ie. blocked via firewall or cable unplugged), it'll popup a requester that gives you the option to copy the download link of the real program to the clipboard.

One of the more pleasant pre-installers ;)

      • +2

Looks like you butchered the link. :(

        • +3

The link in my post is working, just tried it.

EDIT: I see, sengork has copy/pasted rather than right-click 'Copy link'. Use the one in my post until he fixes it.

Mirror in case this link isnt working later: mirror

  • not sure what version I have on all my PCs.
Got from last deal here. Great app.

    • +2

I have 5.01 from previous deal.

  • Pretty good piece of software, I use it on my media server. Displays the temperature for each drive in my RAID array. Also tells me the solid state boot drive is at 76% health, after 23TB writes. :| Damn MLC.

    • It says my Samsung 850 Pro 255GB SSD is at 98% health and 100% performance at 8.90TB written. Got to love these Samsung Pro SSD V-NAND drives for reliability.

    • +1

If that is all you want so does the free Crystal Disk Info.

So why do you need this software?

      • Coz its free… Duh!

      • +1

Because if Crystal Disk Info does something in a way you don't like or fails in some way, you have an alternative.

Personally I find Crystal Disk Info clunky and the main window on Hard Disk Sentinel much easier to work with. I can fire it up, check all my drives and shut it down in a minute or so.

        • +1

Hard Disk Sentinel can also email you if a problem, or impending problem is detected.

        • @eug:

Yeah. If you're willing to leave it running. I don't tend to. But yes that is definitely a feature Crystal Disk Info doesn't offer.

        • @syousef: Why would you not leave it running?

        • @O15:

I don't need my external disks spinning up just so it can check the status. I don't need the extra task running. I just use it when I am interested in looking at the drives.

    • +2

how big is the ssd, must be small to be at 76% after only 23 tb of writes ……
      mlc is fine

      • 240GB.

  • If I click on the direct download link it says "404 Not Found".

  • +3

To be honest I don't know how accurate this software is…
One HDD I have is showing that it has 0% health left and it's still running fine. Another HDD is pretty much dead with unusable lag is showing 100% health…..

    • Better run SeaTools.

    • yea my 7 year old SSD is showing 100% health and 100% performance…

      • You must have a really good SSD then.

        • +1

Or this software isnt very good. hmm

        • @nagel:

Worked for me for my failed SSD. What's your wear leveling count?

    • +2

It is based off the drive SMART data and not every problem with a drive can be diagnosed through SMART. Some hard drives can also be pretty bad at reporting their SMART failures.

    • +1

It's as accurate as your drive's SMART data allows it to be.

  • -1

You don't need this. Turn on SMART warnings and you'll be 1000% fine - at best it'll warn you that a perfectly fine drive is going to fail using some arbitrary thresholds and detection algorithms.

Manufacturers pour tens of thousands of hours into drive longevity and preemptive fault detection; this app is trying to be a "one size fits all" type solution.

Great for assessing how old or used a drive is, I'll concede, but there's hundreds of apps that'll pull this data.

    • I presume you mean in the BIOS/UEFI? Not sure all support SMART warnings and even so would be useless here as I'd average over a month between boots.

    • Ok so you've turned on SMART warnings, where do you see these?

    • This is completely wrong.

Windows will only report when a specific SMART reading goes over a threshold. Generally by the time you get a warning, you've lost a lot of data.

This software will report many different SMART readings so you will often know way before a big problem happens.

      • When you say "server", I do hope you're not talking in an enterprise sense - this isn't enterprise software and you certainly shouldn't be running random software like this in an enterprise environment!

        • -1

Its a home server but there is nothing wrong with running this in an enterprise environment, its just monitoring software.

        • +1

@samfisher5986: There really, really is - but in any case it's unlikely that this would function anyway, given individual disks are fully abstracted from the OS anyway in 99% of cases these days.

I certainly wouldn't trust a random piece of software in any of my clients environments and neither should you!

        • +1

          @picklewizard:
What?! You mean I shouldn't be running this shitware on my EBS volumes in EC2? :(

        • @picklewizard:

I certainly wouldn't trust a random piece of software in any of my clients environments and neither should you!

In my case I have used this software for years and find it pretty good for early warning of a failure. I would chuck it on the Hyper-V Hypervisor host to get past the abstraction issue. Even if the drives are in a RAID volume this will show the individual disks still which is great.

When you say "server", I do hope you're not talking in an enterprise sense - this isn't enterprise software and you certainly shouldn't be running random software like this in an enterprise environment!

That's correct, the giveaway version is the Standard edition. I believe you can't use Standard edition in the enterprise, you must use Professional or Enterprise version if you want to run it on a Server OS. None of the remote/web or anything to do with incoming connections is enabled by default you must manually enable those in advanced settings if you want to use (that might be questionable though I leave em off and just check it locally on a per-server basis)

  • I've been using this software for years on one of my backup computers, it's very good.

  • When installing there is the following message

The current version can be used for unlimited time, but can't be updated
to newer versions. If updated, the software switches back to "unregistered".

  • Any idea why these software are free - i mean what do they get out of it? Do they put any nasties into it?

I had an old HDD sentinel that worked great until I updated and didn't realise and lost my unlimited use. Now it gives me the trial etc. but when you get rid of the confirmation box of it not being registered it still appears to be running? Not too sure how good the stats are?

Does anyone know if installing this will override the old 4.71 version i have and still keep my historical HDD data? I mean does the software work that the longer you've had it installed the longer it has in its history to compare to past HDD health? Or coudl you install it for the first time today vs one that's been installed for 5 years and still get the same accurate HDD health status?

    • +1

they hope people will pay for the newer version as it must have either technical fixes or security patches ….. not always the case, sometimes it’s just features.

    • My old version was overwritten. I don't store drive stats so I don't know if you lose that.

So, what does this program do?
I downloaded, opened program, and in seconds shows all my HD's and their status.
    That's it?

    • +2

What were you expecting it to do?

  • -1

It's just a gimmicky program that you just don't need

  • +1

Here is how I run it. Your use might be different. My experience is mostly with spinning disks not SSD.

    1. Turn off start with Windows. I run this software on demand perhaps once a month or if I notice hard drive issues like unusual noise, slow performance.
    2. 1 icon in the tray. I don't need one per hard drive. Just let it show the highest temp and an overall status.
    3. Set thresholds to above 99 for excellent and above 98 for good, then have it show status for everything but excellent.
    4. Fire it up at least once a month. Cycle through your drives. Spinning disks should have 100% health. Take a look at SMART data tab for more details. If you're seeing any SMART errors you should be below 100% health, and it's time to salvage your data onto another drive, preferably from a backup that isn't showing SMART errors.
  • The installer just installs a zip file, which has the proper installer for the program inside it.

  • The program is good, but the thing I hate about it is that it changes the Hard Drive icons on the computer.

    • +1

You can disable this in the preferences.

  • award winning ?

  • This Windows app saved my butt a few times. Had blinking alert on my tray, clicked it and notice my HD was at 18% health. Decided to duplicate data to new HD. Sure enough a few weeks later, HD died. Also get a good idea when my HD temps are too high since it shows the highest temp HD on the tray bar.

  • FYI - the link still works - 5.0.1 free downloads (~21mb ZIP)

  • any1 want to pm me their key pls? i have dl last year 5.01 version, upgraded to 5.2, cant find email with key, assuming all keys are the same. thank you

    • There are no keys involved with these free versions, the installer just installs without a key. You'll have to uninstall 5.2 and install 5.01 again.

  • Still working for me, just installed.
