    Nice deal!

  • +3

Used to be 100,000 but still a great deal

    • +2

The 100,000 deal is still available until 9th of April for the American Express Explorer

      • +1

But for those who specifically want Velocity points, this is only the equivalent of 75k Velocity points (this deal gets you 15k more)

        • Thanks for the heads up. I'm shopping for a card at the moment. Got a flight to the US and a few USA domestic flights coming up. It's about time I got a card with points. It's so confusing which one is best.

        • @Flyerone: Both Velocity Points and Qantas points are pretty good for domestic US flying! Qantas might be a tad better.

        • +1

          @illumination: Thanks mate.

  • Worth noting the $375 annual fee
Edit, post updated as I comment

    • thanks! a domestic return flight in there as well but just want to check it is right away/not contingent on spending 3k

      • +2

Only the 90k points are contingent on the 3k spend, domestic flight just a standard yearly feature/bonus

        • perfect, will add to description

  • Dont rmb when I cancelled my card…dont dare to apply now..dammit

    • +1

Check when you paid your last balance?

      • Dec 2016 but it was inactive card.. Might be Jan or Feb 2017

    • +3

I called AMEX and they looked it up. Told me to wait until April…

  • +1

could be targeted looking at the T&C's

    1. Bonus & Eligibility: This is an exclusive offer only valid for the Velocity Frequent Flyer member name and number quoted in the email received.
    • could be a situation where you sign up and then get the deal? re-reading now

update: not having any issues applying, even asks if i am currently a velocity frequent flyer

  • +1

If you are a current holder of the card and refer you can get 10,000 points (sometimes they run a promo and you get 20,000). I signed up on the 100,000 and then referred my wife for an additional 20,000 and she got another 10,000 of her sign up.

You can also book anyone on the return flight - I sold my RT domestic for $250.00, just need to call AMEX and they book the person in

Need to have not held a AMEX card for 18 months - bank issued Amex is fine

    • don't think you can refer with this one… as the email has the referral from amex/virgin.

When clicking the usual refer link, only comes up 60,000 bonus points.

      • Bummer

  • My card of choice.

    • Really..? It's not that good anymore (relative to the other available options)

      • What would you be recommending now? I am mainly after an amex for the deals as my bank issued one got closed like all the banks have.

        • +1

I would definitely recommend the AMEX Explorer with the 100k sign-up bonus and $400 Travel Credit.

        • +1

          @illumination:

I also had the Explorer. The Velocity Platinum's flight suits me better than the travel credit, plus I like the direct earning of Velocity points more than the Explorer's rewards gateway.

          Horses for courses etc :)

        • +1

          @gruso: Fair enough.

I'm still a bit surprised because your location is not Perth. For those that live in Perth and redeem this for a PER-SYD return I can understand!

        • @illumination: Thanks. Had a look and found the great wiki on here

Seems the three cards with no annual fee are

Qantas American Express Discovery Card ($0 annual fee)

Velocity American Express Escape Card ($0 annual fee)

American Express Essential Card ($0 annual fee)

Really just down to what points I want to earn. Probably velocity since if we fly its probably Virgin. We'd only use the card when Amex statement credits came up.

        • @kulprit: Between those 3, I would actually recommend the AMEX Essential because AMEX Essential points can also be transferred to Velocity. There is a slight disadvantage in that the equivalent Velocity points you're earning per dollar is actually 0.75 instead of 1.

However, the advantages of the Essential are:

          • Ability to transfer to more than just Velocity points: transferring to KrisFlyer, Asia Miles, Etihad (you can book VA through Etihad and often at cheaper redemption costs) and/or Starwood Preferred Guest are some realistic options.
          • Smartphone Screen Insurance - if you smash your screen, you can get it repaired if you either paid for your phone, or pay for your phone bill on your AMEX card, you can get your screen repaired for a lot cheaper.
          • "Buyer's Advantage" - effectively 12 months additional warranty for products purchased on your Essential.

Do you feel the AMEX Explorer is not worth the annual fee? I would say it absolutely is with the bonus points currently on offer. Keep in mind the free cards often only offer a very limited (watered down) sign up bonus relative to the ones with annual fees.

You don't want to sign up for the Essential just because of its lack of annual fee if it means you'd miss out on 100k bonus points. Don't forget on the Explorer, you get $400 Travel Credit every year which can be used on car hire, flights or hotels (although it's not consistently cheaper). The Explorer also comes with additional features (car hire insurance, travel insurance, some lounge access, higher points earn rate).

I do recall reading another Ozbargainer who commented how much they regretted signing up for one of the free ones "just because it was free" because it caused him to be ineligible for bonus points that other AMEX cards offer.

        • @illumination: My main worry is that if i pay the $400 fee on the basis of using the travel credit then don't use it that year, then really i am at a loss.

With our bank issued mastercard (and previously amex with it). We used all the points every year as cash back on our yearly mortgage fee, then extra as gift cards to bunnings etc. But at a rate of 2.5points per $ spend for amex, and then 20000 points was $100 fee. So a point was worth 0.5c. So if all spending was on amex I was getting about a 1.25% benefit.

  • i remember seeing another one that was for American Express Explorer $395 Fee 100,000 Bonus Member Rewards Points + $400 Travel Credit - that sounds better on paper but maybe the points are worth less?

    • +4

I think that card is better overall, but if you were specifically after Velocity Points, this deal gets you 15k more Velocity points because the AMEX Explorer converts at a rate of 4:3.

  • Velocity card seems to only offer a free return domestic flight where the explorer you can get $400 credit for domestic and international travel and hotels.

    • Correct, but the free domestic return flight could be better for some

      • Yep if you live in remote places like i do Perth :)
Although not sure ill be doing any domestic flying in the next 12 months.

      • Note that if you're chasing status redeeming the (explorer's) credit is good but this card's free flight is not.

  • Would a person who had American qantas card less than 18 months ago be eligible for this bonus offer ?

  • This is what I was waiting for. Unfortunately it came a little earlier than anticipated and less points too. What's the best way to figure out exactly when my last card is cancelled?

    • +2

Probably to call up like this guy did.

And then for the future, take note of when you cancelled a card in an Excel spreadsheet or something similar.

  • Hmmm, I can apply for an Amex Velocity card again (been over 18 months since my last card) but this is 10k points less than what it use to be. Think I'll wait till May and see what new deals they have.

  • I have the AMEX Explorer card can I still refer someone to sign up the AMEX Velocity card and get the bonus referral (30k AMR points)?
