I almost signed up for that one but they sold out when I remembered. What happened?

      • OzBargained. But I am in Perth and wanted to attend - were plenty of seats available. But they sent me an email that Melbourne was sold out and I did not get a place

$696.20 yesterday at about 5 different ebay sellers.

PCByte is a ripoff with a nearly $900 price when others are at $775. Don't support them by buying a ds918 from there.

    • well it's too late now… and where was the post yesterday?

      • I was talking with PCByte to better it, actually.

It took alot of effort and went nowhere. They aren't interested in being competitive.

        • Is there any proof that it was available for $696.20 elsewhere yesterday?

        • @hetzjagd:

Yeah. Seriously can't believe you asked.. $774-$775 with ebay additional 10% off

        • Alright I found it myself https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/368064

Yeah see I normally skip over those/these ebay posts cause they're a massive pain in the ass thanks to the "upvote just for the hell of it" mentality here at OzB.

And still nobody posted or even commented about the all-time-best-price that $696.20 would have been. Disappointing. Oh well for everyone like me who wasn't aware of that and missed out, this is the next best bet.

        • @Letrico:

Yeah the cheapest I can find from yesterday was $779 with 10% off and $15 postage. = $716…

        • +1

This guy is really breaking my balls unneccessairily here. If I missed a deal, ok. But PROVE IT^$#@^$#@

        • @stratbargain:

          It seems $784 - 10% = $705.60
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Synology-DiskStation-DS918-4-Bay…

I swear yesterday they were $774-$775 free post less 10% coupon, I could be wrong, but I did the maths so many times whilst pissing around with back and forward messaging to sellers that I doubt it.

Interestingly, pclan have sold them at $746 about 2 months ago, with a coupon that would have been great!

So worked up. Yeesh. Makes me not want to bother posting here if I managed to try and talk them down

        • @justtoreply:

Yep good point. I didn't see that one.

I have a Synology x86 based NAS and i do quite like it, but these prices are getting stupid.
Lets look at it for what it really is…
A 2016 model Celeron with 4GB of RAM in a plastic / metal enclosure.
Can't even read or write exFAT without buying it as an extra.
Not saying this isn't a deal, just doing a reality check and making a value judgement.

    • You're not wrong. It would seem those with the time and patience could build something functionally just as good for cheaper. I just don't have the patience and would rather spend the time organizing the last several years of data.

      • Why don't you just burn up all that cash buying stupidly big hard drives on a 2 bay instead.

    • +2

Well it's a 2016 celeron with 4GB ram, 2 m.2 slots and 2 ethernet ports, hot swappable raidable drives and some very well developed software on the frontend.

I'm not saying you couldn't build a NAS for cheaper, but it is a pretty damn good piece of kit. If you just want a NAS then there are much cheaper options. But for a mini server and nas combo it's not a bad option (especially now with Docker support etc).

The exFAT thing did make me laugh though. $3?? Are you serious?

    • -1

Right. I came here to figure out how this is better than my HP Microserver that I paid about $250 for.

  • Anyone found some deals on hard drives?

    • Nothing fantastic but depending on how many you want you can shuck some 8tb WD Red's from my deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/365959 or there is a amazon link in the comments which is cheaper if you're buying one drive but if you buy four it's cheaper at BHPhoto by my counting.
